WoW Forever · Crafting Professions
The Best WoW Forever Profession for Gold, From Beta Data
Every WoW Forever profession ranked from beta client data: recipe counts, new recipes, the share that beat their reagent bill on beta scans, and who buys what you make.
The short answer
On the beta data, Leatherworking is the best WoW Forever profession for gold, with Alchemy a close second and Tailoring third. Leatherworking has the biggest recipe book in the client (603 abilities, 239 new recipes) and the best record on the beta Auction House: 65% of its crafts that we could price on both scanned houses sold for more than their reagents, and its new
Forceful Heavy Armor Kit sold for 85 silver44 copper. Alchemy wins on a different measure: it makes
Cerulean Dye, a new dye that 131 recipes in other professions need, so it has buyers no matter what the potion market does. If you want a gathering profession beside it, pair Leatherworking with Skinning, Alchemy with Herbalism, and Blacksmithing or Engineering with Mining.
Lowest buyout from player scans of the WoW Forever beta Auction House, as of beta build 70291. Beta prices are a testing economy and will not carry over to launch. Last verified
How we ranked them
Most "best profession" lists are opinion. This one uses four numbers you can check:
- Book size: how many recipes in the beta client make an item. More recipes means more products and more ways to level cheaply.
- New recipes: how many of those are new in Forever. New products have no settled price, which is where early sellers make money.
- Beat-the-bill rate: of the crafts where the product and every reagent had a beta scan on both houses, the share that sold above their reagent bill on 2026-10-08.
- Export demand: how many recipes in other professions need something only this profession makes. That is demand you do not have to create.
The facts about the profession system itself come only from the client and Blizzard's launch notes. The client's Artisan rank for each crafting profession still reads "up to a maximum potential skill of 300". Blizzard's launch facts say professions gain more than 600 new recipes and that a Basic Campfire holds up to three crafted objects, one per player, on a one-hour cooldown. The launch facts do not say how many primary professions a character can hold; in Classic it was two, and nothing in the profession tables we read changes that.
The ranking table
| Rank | Profession | Item recipes | New | Priced on both houses | Beat their bill | Rate | Export demand |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leatherworking | 482 | 239 | 95 | 62 | 65% | Heavy, Rugged and Thick Leather for other crafts |
| 2 | Alchemy | 182 | 70 | 63 | 37 | 59% | Cerulean and Magenta Dye, Viridian Dye, Sulfuric Acid: 185 recipes elsewhere |
| 3 | Tailoring | 405 | 164 | 84 | 49 | 58% | bolts for a few recipes elsewhere |
| 4 | Engineering | 249 | 75 | 55 | 29 | 53% | Sandpaper: 25 Blacksmithing recipes |
| 5 | Blacksmithing | 419 | 177 | 71 | 34 | 48% | buckles and a few parts |
| 6 | Enchanting | 60 | 36 | 11 | 4 | 36% | Enchanted Leather and Enchanted Thorium Bar: 147 recipes elsewhere |
| Secondary | Cooking | 130 | 42 | 38 | 14 | 37% | campfires for every camp |
| Secondary | First Aid | 32 | 17 | 17 | 3 | 18% | none to speak of |
Enchanting's low rate needs a footnote. Only 60 of the 270 Enchanting abilities create an item; 192 of the rest are enchants, which cannot be sold on the Auction House at all. Enchanters make their money selling dust, essences and shards, which this table does not capture. See Enchanting for gold.
Total value made against total bill
Another way to read the beta: add up every product that had a price and every bill we could price, by profession, and compare. On 2026-10-08:
| Profession | Products sold for | Reagents cost | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | 235 gold74 silver | 74 gold41 silver | 3.17 |
| Leatherworking | 87 gold77 silver | 58 gold31 silver | 1.51 |
| Blacksmithing | 92 gold8 silver | 61 gold68 silver | 1.49 |
| Tailoring | 119 gold56 silver | 82 gold23 silver | 1.45 |
| Enchanting | 6 gold11 silver | 4 gold98 silver | 1.23 |
| Alchemy | 32 gold55 silver | 29 gold69 silver | 1.10 |
Engineering leads by a mile here, but look at why. A handful of devices, the Deadly Scope, the new Hoof-Shaped Foot Pedal, Goblin Jumper Cables, sold for many times their bill and lifted the total. Most engineering parts and every bomb we priced lost money. So Engineering is the profession with the best few crafts, and Leatherworking is the profession with the most crafts that pay. Alchemy's ratio is low because its products are cheap consumables; its edge is volume and export demand, not margin.
Profession by profession
Leatherworking. The biggest book, the best beat-the-bill rate, and a new product type that works: Forceful and Mystic armor kits turn a money-losing Heavy Armor Kit into one that sold for 85 silver44 copper. The risk is
Pristine Leather, used in 80 Leatherworking recipes and sold at 52 silver, with no crafted source. Full guide.
Alchemy. Lost the Healing Potion line to First Aid, gained three dyes and an acid that 185 recipes in other professions depend on. Shadow Oil was the best margin on the beta at 35 silver89 copper for each of two oils per craft. Cheapest profession to level by far. Full guide.
Tailoring. No gathering profession needed, bags sell to everyone, and the new Reagent Bags beat plain bags at every tier we could price;
Mageweave Reagent Bag sold for 9 gold99 silver. But the new rare robes eat Cerulean Dye, which can be more than half the bill. Full guide.
Engineering. The best individual items, the Repair Bot for every camp, and
Sandpaper for blacksmiths at 15 silver. Bombs and parts are skill-ups, not income.
Accurate Scope had 88 listed at 1 gold59 silver. Full guide.
Blacksmithing. A huge new book (177 recipes, 104 of them rare) and the biggest appetite for bars, especially
Bronze Bar: the new recipes alone want 512 Bronze Bars. Its rare chain families had no beta listings at all, so its ranking may jump at launch. Full guide and Skyforged Armor.
Enchanting. Sell materials. Most new Enchanting items are Bind on Pickup in the client. Full guide.
The secondary professions
Every character can take the secondaries, so they are not a slot decision, but they matter for gold:
- Cooking is better than its rate suggests. 103 of its 130 recipes make food with a 5% kill experience line in the client, so every levelling player is a buyer.
Lean Venison sold for 4 silver31 copper, about three times its cost. Cooking and XP Food. - Fishing feeds Cooking and Alchemy and gains camp objects that catch uncommon and rare fish. Fishing for gold.
- First Aid mostly turns cloth into something worth less. The exception was
Mageweave Bandage at 30 silver, and the Toxin Study camp object. First Aid.

Which pair to pick
Primary professions work best in pairs that feed each other. Based on what each book needs:
| Pair | Why it works on the beta data |
|---|---|
| Leatherworking and Skinning | the leather book is huge and leather was cheap and deep; you keep the Pristine Hide margin |
| Alchemy and Herbalism | the cheapest path in the game, and dyes turn your own Frilled Lichen and Rosecap into a product four professions buy |
| Tailoring and Enchanting | cloth drops while you quest; disenchant the greens you make and sell the dust |
| Blacksmithing and Mining | bronze is the bottleneck metal from 85 to 185; smelting your own keeps that margin |
| Engineering and Mining | the same bars, plus Bauxite for Sandpaper |
| Alchemy and Tailoring | the tailor's biggest bill is the alchemist's product |
That last pair is the one nobody else will suggest. On the beta, six Cerulean Dye made up more than half of a rare gown's bill. A character with both professions turns that cost into a herb bill.
How to read a beta price
Every price on this page is a player scan of the beta Auction House, and the beta is a strange market. Three habits keep you honest when you use these numbers:
- Check how many houses listed it. Our scans cover two beta houses. A price seen on both is a market; a price on one house may be a single player's asking price.
- Check the depth. Thousands of Light Leather listed at a few copper is a real price. Two Searing Golden Blades at a high price is a guess.
- Compare ratios, not amounts. The beta economy resets at launch, so the amounts will change. The relationships tend to survive: whether a bar is worth more than its ore, whether a kit is worth more than its inputs, whether dye is most of a robe's bill.
That is why this ranking leans on the beat-the-bill rate rather than raw gold. A profession where most crafts sell above their reagents on the beta is likely to keep that shape at launch, even if every number moves.
A launch-week plan for any profession
- Before launch day, decide your pair and read its guide. Know which three crafts beat their bill.
- On day one, gather, do not craft. Raw materials sell fastest while everyone is levelling.
- Level your profession on the cheapest recipes that still give skill-ups, and keep the products that sold on the beta.
- List new products one at a time, at a clear markup on the bill. You are setting the price; do not race to undercut yourself.
- Make one camp object for your own camp at skill 20 to 25. It costs a few copper and is the cheapest buff in the game.
- Recheck this page and the profession guides after the first week, when we switch from beta scans to launch prices.
What would change this ranking
- Pristine Leather's source. If it turns out to be rare, Leatherworking and Blacksmithing drop and Alchemy rises.
- Rare item prices at launch. 389 of the new recipes in the three armour crafts make rare or epic items, and almost none had a beta price. Blacksmithing has the most to gain.
- The level cap. The beta stopped at 20 and then 30. Thorium, Felcloth, Fel Leather and the new bars are where the endgame money is, and none of it was tradeable yet.
- Camp objects. If the Repair Bot, Camp Tent or Arcane Salvager become must-haves, their professions get a steady new product.

- Level
- 5 or higher to train a primary profession
- Profession
- two primaries (in Classic) plus Cooking, Fishing and First Aid
- Skill cap
- 300 per profession (Artisan, per the client)
- Group
- Solo

How this guide was written
Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
