Fishing for Gold in WoW Forever: The Fish Worth Selling

WoW Forever fish priced from beta scans, the Alchemy, Cooking and First Aid recipes that eat them, the new Whimsyfin, and the Fishing camp objects that catch rarer fish.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · WoW Forever beta, as of beta build 70291

The short answer

Fishing in WoW Forever earns gold the slow, steady way: by selling the handful of fish that another profession needs. The beta client lists 34 fish and seafood items that appear as reagents in a recipe, and most of them were cheap on the beta, often a copper or two. The ones worth catching for sale were Deviate Fish at 4 silver39 copper, the new Whimsyfin at 5 silver98 copper, and Raw Greater Sagefish at 4 silver25 copper, all with hundreds listed and a recipe behind them. Forever also gives Fishing three camp objects of its own, two of which let you catch uncommon and rare fish for a time. That is new, and it is where the real money will come from once the level cap opens.

The fish worth selling, ranked

Here is every fish or seafood item that had a beta price and a recipe that uses it, ranked by price, with who buys it:

Two fish had higher single prices but almost no market: Raw Summer Bass was listed at 36 silver with two units, and Giant Clam Meat at 50 silver with five. Those are not markets, they are asks. Below the table sit a dozen fish that sold for under 20 copper each, from Longjaw Mud Snapper to Spotted Yellowtail; those are cooking skill-ups, not income.

Whimsyfin: the new fish

Whimsyfin is a new item in the Forever client, and it has exactly one use: Savory Whimsyfin Delight, a new Cooking recipe at skill 125 to 165 that takes one Whimsyfin and one Mild Spices. The food's use text in the client is just "Eat me.", the same as Savory Deviate Delight, which in Classic turned you into a random pirate or ninja. Whimsyfin looks like Forever's version of the Deviate joke fish.

The market agreed it was popular. On the beta Savory Whimsyfin Delight had 1,301 units listed, more than any other cooked food, at 6 silver. On 2026-10-08 our tables read the fish at 6 silver74 copper and the delight at 7 silver80 copper, so the cooking margin was 1 silver1 copper after a 5 copper spice. Thin, but the fish itself is the better sale: 268 Whimsyfin were listed against 1,301 delights, so more people were cooking it than selling it raw. We have not found where Whimsyfin is caught on the beta; nobody on our side has fished one up with a log running.

The Alchemy buyers: oils and Giant Growth

Alchemy is the one profession that buys raw fish directly, and the oils it makes feed other recipes in turn. Our analysis of the oil chain:

OilFish per craftMakesUsed byBeta value of the oilBeta value of the fish
Blackmouth Oil2 Oily Blackmouth15 recipes, 7 units: water breathing and walking, Free Action, Swim Speed, Enchant Gloves: Fishing3 silver92 copper1 silver60 copper
Fire Oil2 Firefin Snapper217 recipes, 51 units: fire elixirs and protection, Tailoring's new Flame gear42 copper each2 silver
Stonescale Oil1 Stonescale Eel25 recipes, 51 units: Flask of Petrification (30), Flask of the Titans (10) and othersnot listed yet11 copper

Fire Oil is worth a closer look. Tailoring's new Flame flavour (Flame Boots, Gloves, Sash, Circlet, Gown and Leggings, plus the Filigreed Flame pieces) takes one to eight Fire Oil per craft. On the beta, two Firefin Snapper cost 2 silver and made two Fire Oil that sold for 42 copper each, a loss for the alchemist. But it made the Flame version the cheapest of the six tailoring flavours: a Flame Gown cost 11 gold7 silver to make against 11 gold10 silver for a Shining Gown. Snapper is the reason.

Stonescale Eel is the long play. At the beta cap nobody needs flasks, so eels sold for 11 copper with nearly a thousand listed. At endgame, a single Flask of Petrification eats 30 Stonescale Oil, which is 15 eels. Keep eels in the bank.

Elixir of Giant Growth is the best fish-to-potion deal on the beta: one Deviate Fish, one Earthroot and a vial made an elixir that sold for 9 silver95 copper, against a bill of 4 silver37 copper, with more than a thousand listed.

The Cooking buyers

Most fish go to cooks, and in Forever most cooked fish carry the new kill experience bonus on their Well Fed buff (see Cooking and XP Food). That gives fish a steady buyer in levelling players. The best fish for cooks on the beta were the ones that turned into food selling well above the raw fish: Loch Frenzy Delight sold for 2 silver50 copper from a 12 copper fish and a spice, and Smoked Sagefish and Sagefish Delight carry stat bonuses that classes want. Spinefin Halibut, a recipe that is new to Forever's book, gives Fishing Skill on its Well Fed buff, a nice loop for a fisher who cooks.

Fishing camp objects: Bowl, Rack and Hut

Forever gives Fishing a camp line through a skill the client calls Bait and Tackle, "allows the fisher to add features to a wilderness camp":

ObjectClient skill bandReagentsClient text, short
Fish Bowl20 to 251 Raw Brilliant Smallfish, 1 Empty Vialincreased stats for players sitting nearby
Fishing Rack140 to 1452 Simple Wood, 1 Crystal Vial, 2 Raw Mithril Head Trout"the ability to catch uncommon fish" for a time, plus Fishing Skill lures
Fishing Hut3005 Simple Wood, 2 Bolt of Runecloth, 1 Seasonal Fish Steaks"the ability to catch rare fish" for a time, plus lures

The Rack and the Hut are the gold story. Catching uncommon and rare fish for a period is a new mechanic, and a fisher with a Hut in their camp will be pulling fish other players cannot. We do not know yet which fish those are or how long the effect lasts; the client gives the duration as a separate spell we have not decoded. The Hut needs Seasonal Fish Steaks, "a refreshing preparation of seasonal fish ready to be used in recipes", and nothing in our extract makes it.

The Fish Bowl sold for 70 copper on the beta against a 61 copper bill, almost break even. The Rack had no listings.

How to make gold from fishing

  1. Fish wherever you are levelling and sell Deviate Fish, Greater Sagefish and Whimsyfin raw. They had the best combination of price and depth.
  2. Bank Stonescale Eels from the start. They are worth almost nothing now and a lot at endgame.
  3. Cook the fish that turn into good XP food (Loch Frenzy, Sagefish) and sell the food in stacks.
  4. Skip Fire Oil and Blackmouth Oil as products; sell the fish to alchemists and tailors instead.
  5. Build a Fish Bowl for your own camp at 20, and a Fishing Rack at 140 as soon as you can.
  6. Keep a log of every uncommon fish your Rack lets you catch. Those will be the first new fish markets of Forever.

Where to fish while the beta lasts

We have not walked or timed a fishing route on the Forever beta, so there is no catch rate on this page. What we can give you is where the fish in the table came from in Classic, labelled as Classic, so you know where to start looking:

  • Deviate Fish: in Classic, the oases of the Barrens. Elixir of Giant Growth and Savory Deviate Delight both need it.
  • Raw Sagefish and Greater Sagefish: in Classic, inland lakes and rivers in the low and mid zones; Sagefish foods restore mana.
  • Oily Blackmouth and Firefin Snapper: in Classic, coastal pools and open water from Westfall and Darkshore up through Stranglethorn Vale.
  • Stonescale Eel: in Classic, the open ocean and pools in the high level coastal zones such as Tanaris, Feralas and Azshara.
  • Raw Mithril Head Trout: in Classic, rivers and lakes in mid level zones; Forever's Fishing Rack needs two of them.

Forever also adds the Riverglades, a mid-level zone that Blizzard describes as roughly the size of Stranglethorn Vale, and the name alone suggests water. We will add it here once someone has fished it with a log running.

Risks to plan around

  • Everyone fishes. Fishing is a secondary profession and costs nothing but a pole and time, so common fish will always be cheap.
  • Beta prices are low level prices. At a cap of 20 to 30, the fish that matter at endgame (eels, Summer Bass, Plated Armorfish) had no real market yet.
  • The camp objects are unknowns. If uncommon and rare fish from Racks and Huts turn out to be plentiful, they will be cheap; if they are scarce, they will be the best fishing income in the game. We cannot tell which from the client alone.

What to watch on the Auction House

  1. Whimsyfin against Savory Whimsyfin Delight.
  2. Deviate Fish against Elixir of Giant Growth.
  3. Firefin Snapper as Tailoring's Flame sets come into reach.
  4. Stonescale Eel at endgame.
  5. The first uncommon and rare fish from Racks and Huts.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
