Leatherworking for Gold in WoW Forever: The Biggest Recipe Book

WoW Forever Leatherworking from the beta client: 239 new recipes, Pristine Leather demand, the new Forceful and Mystic armor kits and beta-scan margins.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · WoW Forever beta, as of beta build 70291

The short answer

Leatherworking has the biggest recipe book in WoW Forever. Our extract of the beta client lists 603 Leatherworking abilities, more than any other profession, with 482 recipes that make an item and 239 of those new. 139 of the new recipes make rare quality gear, and Forever gives leatherworkers mail as well as leather in several of the new sets. For gold, the profession now has three income streams: leather armour that nobody has priced yet, the new Forceful and Mystic armor kits, which beat their bill on the beta at every tier we could price, and a hunger for Pristine Leather that runs through 79 new recipes. On the latest player scans Pristine Leather sold for 52 silver and Forceful Heavy Armor Kit for 85 silver44 copper.

Why the book is so big

Classic Leatherworking already had three specialisations' worth of recipes. Forever keeps those and adds whole families, almost all built on the same five-or-six-flavour idea other crafts use: one base recipe per slot, with one reagent that changes the version. Here are the new families as they appear in the client:

FamilyNew recipesClient skill bandFlavour reagent
Azure and Cloudy Gustwoven and Windraveled3255 to 70, then 185none in the low tier; Blue Dye or Bleach on the head and shoulders
Brawler's, Defender's, Stormrider's, Totemic, Trapper's, Wisdom's5480 to 150Shadowgem, Elixir of Minor Fortitude, Cerulean Dye, Sulfuric Acid, Deviate Scale, Small Lustrous Pearl
Mender's and Skycaller's (leather and mail)28155 to 290Iridescent Pearl, Elemental Water
Prowler's, Skirmisher's, Skulker's, Stalker's, Warden's40155 to 270Jade, Citrine, Spider's Silk, Elemental Air, Elemental Earth

Fel Leather and Malleable Essence epics9310 to 320Fel Leather, Fel Hide
Armor kits, camp objects, misc30all levelssee below

The Mender's and Skycaller's lines are the surprise. Each has seven leather pieces and seven mail pieces with identical bills: Mender's Leather Shoulder and Mender's Mail Shoulder both take ten Thick Leather, three Cured Heavy Hide, four Pristine Hide, two Silken Thread, three Iridescent Pearl and two Pristine Leather. A leatherworker in Forever can dress a mail wearer from the same materials as a leather wearer.

Pristine Leather: the reagent behind the new sets

This is the number to plan around. Pristine Leather appears in 80 Leatherworking recipes (303 units if each is made once) and in 126 recipes across all professions, counting Blacksmithing's chain belts and boots and Tailoring's Pristine flavour. No profession in the beta client crafts it, so every unit comes from the world. Its partner, Pristine Hide, appears in 43 Leatherworking recipes (266 units) and was far cheaper on the beta.

Pristine Scale1210216 recipes, 121 unitsnot listed yet
Fel Leather2036620 recipes, 366 unitsnot listed yet

All counts in this table are recipes that create an item in our extract. Fel Leather also shows up in 32 more Leatherworking abilities (the Grovekeeper and Spiritcaller lines among them) whose product our build 70124 extract does not name, so its real demand is larger than the row shows. At 2026-10-08 prices Pristine Leather cost about 23 times a Pristine Hide. That gap is the whole cost structure of the mid-level rare sets. Brawler's Leather Legguards, for example, take twelve Medium Leather, four Cured Light Hide, eight Pristine Leather, thread and eight Shadowgems: the bill was 5 gold65 silver, and the eight Pristine Leather at 60 silver46 copper each came to 4 gold83 silver, or 85% of the total.

Armor kits finally make money

Classic armor kits were skill-up filler that sold for less than their leather. Forever adds Forceful and Mystic versions of the Medium, Heavy, Thick and Rugged kits. Each one takes the old kit as a reagent and adds dust and a potion or elixir. On the beta they all sold above their bill where we could price them:

KitClient skill bandReagentsBillSold at
Medium Armor Kit90 to 1054 Medium Leather, 1 Coarse Thread6 silver60 copper8 silver20 copper
Forceful Medium Armor Kit (new)95 to 110Medium Armor Kit, 2 Strange Dust, 2 Elixir of Minor Strength14 silver94 copper22 silver11 copper
Mystic Medium Armor Kit (new)95 to 110Medium Armor Kit, 2 Strange Dust, 2 Minor Mana Potion13 silver54 copper20 silver25 copper
Heavy Armor Kit145 to 1655 Heavy Leather, 1 Fine Thread43 silver5 copper32 silver99 copper
Forceful Heavy Armor Kit (new)155 to 175Heavy Armor Kit, 2 Soul Dust, 2 Elixir of Giant Growth66 silver31 copper89 silver99 copper
Mystic Heavy Armor Kit (new)155 to 175Heavy Armor Kit, 2 Soul Dust, 2 Lesser Mana Potion51 silver41 copper66 silver69 copper

Read the Heavy rows carefully. A plain Heavy Armor Kit lost money on the beta, but turning it into a Forceful Heavy Armor Kit added 33 silver32 copper of reagents and 57 silver of value. The new kits rescue the old ones. They also had depth: more than a hundred of each listed across both houses. Forceful kits need an alchemist's elixir and Mystic kits a potion, so a Leatherworking and Alchemy pair can make the whole chain from herbs and leather.

What sold above its bill on the beta

120 Leatherworking recipes had a product price and a full reagent bill; 95 were listed on both houses and 62 of those sold above their bill, the best ratio of any big profession on the beta. The biggest gaps:

RecipeClient skill bandBillSold atListed
Barbaric Bracers155 to 1751 gold22 silver10 gold10
Guardian Armor170 to 1902 gold10 silver4 gold32 silver10
Red Whelp Gloves120 to 14525 silver50 copper1 gold9 silver17
Deviate Scale Belt115 to 1402 gold94 silver3 gold69 silver15
Dusky Leather Armor170 to 1901 gold74 silver2 gold38 silver35
Toughened Leather Gloves135 to 16074 silver38 copper1 gold20 silver36

Barbaric Bracers was the standout, selling for about eight times its bill. It takes a Raptor Hide and four Large Fangs on top of the leather, which are drops rather than crafts, and that limits supply. Guardian Armor doubled its bill on both houses. Every one of the top six is an old Classic recipe, because the new rare sets had no listings yet.

Light, medium and heavy leather on the beta

Leather was abundant on the beta. More than eleven thousand Light Leather and eleven thousand Medium Leather were listed, at 40 copper and 1 silver50 copper. Converting leather upwards was close to break even: four Light Leather made a Medium that sold for 1 silver60 copper against 1 silver32 copper, five Medium made a Heavy at 8 silver39 copper against 8 silver, but six Heavy into a Thick Leather lost money (50 silver34 copper in, 38 silver out). Cured Medium Hide was the best curing margin: one Medium Hide and a Salt at 6 silver5 copper made a hide that sold for 9 silver.

Camp objects: Tent, Tanning Rack, Sewing Machine

ObjectClient skill bandReagentsClient text, short
Camp Tent20 to 255 Light Leatherraises Rested experience for players sitting nearby, up to 5% of a level
Tanning Rack140 to 1455 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread, 2 Simple Woodallows the creation of certain reagents, plus Tent benefits
Sewing Machine300Undeath Engine, 5 Rugged Leather, Rune Threadneeded for recipes that require it, plus Tent benefits

The Camp Tent is the one every levelling player will want: the client's tent spell raises rested experience to 5% of a level for anyone sitting nearby. It sold for less than its leather on the beta, which tells you few people had worked that out yet. The Sewing Machine needs an Undeath Engine, "harnessed undead spirits used to power Vectus's Sewing Machine" in the item text. Vectus is a Scholomance name in Classic; we have not confirmed a Forever drop.

How to level Leatherworking for gold

  1. 1 to 55: Light Armor Kits, Cured Light Hide and a Camp Tent for yourself.
  2. 55 to 70: the 24 copper-tier Gustwoven and Windraveled pieces. Light Leather and Coarse Thread only, under 4 silver a piece at beta prices.
  3. 80 to 150: one of the six-flavour families. Brawler's (Shadowgem) and Wisdom's (pearl) were the cheapest flavours on the beta; avoid recipes that take more than two Pristine Leather until you know its launch price.
  4. 95 to 175: Forceful and Mystic Medium and Heavy kits for sale. This is the best repeatable money in the book on beta numbers.
  5. 155 to 290: Mender's, Skycaller's and the Jade, Citrine and element families. Iridescent Pearl decides the Mender's bill, Elemental Water the Skycaller's.
  6. Past the cap: Rugged Leather, Enchanted Leather, then the Fel Leather epics.

Leather or mail: choosing what to craft

Because several new families come in both armour types, a leatherworker has a choice Classic never offered. The bills are identical, so the decision is purely about buyers. In Classic, leather was worn by rogues and druids at every level and by hunters and shamans until 40; mail was worn by hunters and shamans from 40 and by warriors and paladins who wanted it. We have not confirmed how Forever handles armour proficiency or what the Skyborne can play, so treat that as a Classic starting point.

A simple way to decide on launch day:

  1. List one leather and one mail version of the same slot at the same price.
  2. Whichever sells first, craft three more of that type.
  3. Keep the other in your bank as stock rather than undercutting it.
  4. Recheck after each server reset; the balance will move as the population levels.

Risks to plan around

  • Pristine Leather supply. It is a world material with no crafted source in the client. If it turns out to be rare, every mid-level rare set gets expensive, and the cheap Brawler's helm and pants (which do not use it) become the better skill-ups.
  • Thin beta markets. Many of the best gaps above came from ten to forty units listed. One bulk seller at launch could halve them.
  • Alchemy inputs. The new kits need elixirs and potions. If those rise, the kit margin shrinks.
  • Unknown stats. We cannot see in the extract whether a Trapper's piece beats a dungeon drop at the same level. If it does not, the six-flavour sets sell on looks, not power.

What to watch on the Auction House

  1. Pristine Leather against Pristine Hide. Leather was 23 times the hide on the beta.
  2. Forceful and Mystic kits against their inputs, especially Elixir of Giant Growth and Lesser Mana Potion.
  3. The first listings of the rare families. None had a scan.
  4. Thick Leather. The book uses 1,019 units across all recipes, more than any other leather below Rugged.
  5. Rugged Leather at endgame: 1,959 units across 128 recipes.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so.
