The short answer

Copper Ore is the first thing every new miner pulls out of the ground in WoW Forever, and on the beta it is worth more as ore than as metal. The latest player scans of the beta Auction House put Copper Ore at 42 copper and Copper Bar at 46 copper. On 2026-10-08 the ore was the more expensive of the two, which means smelting was losing a little value on every bar. That will not last forever, because the client gives Copper Bars far more uses than it gives ore, but it is the right starting point: check the strip below, and only smelt when the bar is worth more than the ore it eats.

What the client says about Copper

We read the Forever beta client directly, so the facts in this section come from the game files rather than from memory of Classic. Copper Ore vendors for 5 copper and Copper Bar for 10 copper. The Mining skill itself is described in the client as the way to pull ore and stone from mineral veins for Engineering and Blacksmithing, and it requires a Mining Pick. Smelt Copper takes one ore for one bar, and the client marks it trivial between skill 25 and 70, so it stops being a useful skill-up well before you leave the copper zones.

The interesting part is what happens after smelting. Our extract of the beta profession tables (build 70124) lists 65 recipes that take Copper Bar as a reagent. That is the demand side of the copper market, and it is large.

ProfessionRecipes using Copper BarNew to ForeverExamples

Engineering112Copper Tube, Copper Modulator, Arclight Spanner, SAF-T Copper Bomb, EZ-Thro Copper Bomb XL

Leatherworking11Winter Boots

Of the 65 recipes that use Copper Bar, 32 are new in Forever, very nearly half. Blacksmithing carries most of that: the client adds whole Skyforged chain sets in Azure and Cloudy colours, five new Chain Belt recipes that each take twelve bars, and a Sterling Silver armour set that still asks for two to four Copper Bars per piece. Engineering gains a SAF-T Copper Bomb and an EZ-Thro Copper Bomb XL. Even Leatherworking gets a Copper Bar recipe in Winter Boots, though that one sits at skill 285 and will never move the copper market on its own.

The demand math

Here is a number nobody else prints. If one character crafted every Copper Bar recipe in the beta client exactly once, they would use 394 Copper Bars. Blacksmiths level through many of these recipes and craft the cheap ones dozens of times, so a single Blacksmith pushing from 1 to about 125 can burn through hundreds of bars on their own. Multiply that by every new Blacksmith on a realm in launch week and the bar market has a very large buyer for a short time.

Recipe groupSkill range in the clientCopper Bars per craft
Rough Copper Vest, Copper Bracers, Copper Rod10 to 601 to 4
Copper Chain Pants, Copper Mace, Copper Axe50 to 1004 to 6
Skyforged chain pieces (new)55 to 705 to 8
Copper Battle Axe, Heavy Copper Maul, Ironforge Chain70 to 12012
New Chain Belt family (Acolyte's, Crusader's, Guard's, Protector's, Veteran's)85 to 12512
Heavy Copper Broadsword, Ironforge Breastplate110 to 15514 to 16

Read the right-hand column against the left. The cheapest recipes are where most skill-ups happen early, but the mid-range belts and axes at twelve bars each are where the volume goes. A Blacksmith who plans to level through the new belt family needs sixty bars just to craft each belt once.

New in Forever: Lodestone and the camp objects

The beta client adds a Mining recipe called Lodestone. It costs one Rough Stone and one Copper Bar, it sits at skill 20 to 25 in the client, and the client labels it Tier 1. Two more Mining recipes carry the same kind of label: Rock Garden at Tier 2 (two Heavy Stone, one Iron Ore, one Silver Bar) and Molten Foundry at Tier 3 (five Thorium Bar, two Dense Stone, one Truesilver Bar). These appear to be the Mining entries in the campsite system Forever adds for each profession.

For a copper miner the Lodestone matters for one reason: it is a second steady use for Copper Bar, and one of only two new uses for Rough Stone (the other is the Blacksmithing Sharpening Wheel). On 2026-10-08 the beta scans had Lodestone at 4 copper per unit, almost nothing, which tells you the beta market treats it as a skill-up craft rather than a product. Expect that to change only if campsite objects turn out to be something players want to buy rather than make.

Smelt or sell

This is the decision that actually earns or loses gold, so here is how to make it with the numbers in front of you.

  1. Compare 46 copper for one Copper Bar against 42 copper for one Copper Ore. Smelting is one ore for one bar, so the bar has to be worth more than the ore.
  2. Remember the cut. The Auction House takes its share on whichever item you sell, so a bar that is only a copper or two above the ore is not worth the trip to a forge.
  3. Smelt for your own Blacksmith or Engineer. If you or an alt is levelling a crafting profession, smelting your own ore is the cheapest bar you will ever get, and it also levels Mining until skill 70.
  4. Sell ore when it leads. On the day this page was written, ore sold for more than bars. Selling the ore raw was the better call for a pure gatherer.
  5. Watch launch week. When thousands of new Blacksmiths log in on the same day, bar demand jumps and the bar should overtake the ore. That is the moment to smelt your whole stock.

The bonus drops: stone and gems

Mining copper also gives you stone and the occasional gem, and on the beta those are not worth ignoring. Rough Stone sold for 2 copper in the latest scan and feeds Blacksmithing's Rough Sharpening Stone, Rough Weightstone and Rough Grinding Stone, the new Sharpening Wheel, Engineering's Rough Blasting Powder and the Lodestone. Most of those products sold for only a few copper each in the same scan, so stone is a volume item: worth listing in bulk, not worth fussing over.

The gems are different. Shadowgem was the most valuable thing a copper vein can give on 2026-10-08 at 2 silver89 copper, ahead of Tigerseye at 1 silver and Malachite at 15 copper. In Classic, copper veins dropped all three gems; we have not logged a Forever mining session yet, so we cannot confirm the drop rates on the beta. Sell the Shadowgems, keep a few Malachite and Tigerseye if a jewelry or enchanting alt is on the way, and do not vendor them: Shadowgem and Tigerseye sold above their vendor price in the latest scan, and Malachite only matched it, so even the cheapest gem loses nothing on the Auction House.

Where to mine copper

Copper Ore belongs to the starting zones. The beta client ships zone maps for eight of them, shown below, and in Classic every one of these zones had copper veins along its hills and roads. We have not walked a timed copper route on the Forever beta yet, so treat this section as the place to start looking. The beta also adds new zones such as Riverglades and Zephras Isle; we will add them here once someone has mined them with a log running.

Elwynn Forest: Eastern Kingdoms, Zone ID 12

Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Westfall, Loch Modan, Tirisfal Glades and Silverpine Forest cover the Eastern Kingdoms side. Elwynn and Dun Morogh are where most Alliance miners take their first swings, so expect competition at launch. Westfall and Loch Modan are the next step up and are usually quieter than the starter zones in the first days.

Durotar and Darkshore are the Kalimdor options. Durotar is a Horde starting zone and will be busy in launch week; Darkshore runs long and thin along the coast, which spreads players out.

Copper Ore, Forever starting zones

Not walked yet

No hourly gold figure is published here until this route has been walked end to end with a timer and a full loot log. Until then this page gives you the inputs (live prices and what drops) and leaves the arithmetic to you.

Is copper worth your time on the beta?

As a money maker, not much: every price on this page is measured in copper and silver, and the beta economy resets at launch anyway. As practice, yes. The beta is the place to learn where veins sit, how the new Lodestone fits into a camp, and how quickly bar prices react when a lot of players start Blacksmithing at once. At launch the same ore, the same 65 recipes and the same flood of new crafters arrive together, and a miner who already knows when to smelt and when to sell raw will be the one who prices bars instead of chasing them.

When the live economy opens, this page will switch from beta scans to launch prices. Until a route has been walked and timed, there will be no hourly gold figure here, only the inputs: what the ore is worth, what it turns into, and who is buying.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
