Thorium and Arcane Crystal in WoW Forever

The short answer

Thorium is the top of the Classic mining ladder, and WoW Forever adds a rung above it. The beta client carries a new ore, Heavy Thorium, with its own smelt and forty-two new recipes. On the beta Auction House the market is almost empty because the level cap keeps testers far below thorium zones: the latest player scans show Thorium Ore at 77 silver from a single house, and no listings for Thorium Bar, Heavy Thorium or Arcane Crystal. So this page is about launch, not the beta. The headline: every Arcanite Bar needs one Arcane Crystal and one Thorium Bar, and the client lists 88 recipes that use Arcanite. That makes Arcane Crystal the most important single drop in the thorium band, and the best reason to mine rich veins at all.

What the client says

We read the Forever beta client directly. Smelt Thorium takes one Thorium Ore for one Thorium Bar and sits at skill 250. Smelt Heavy Thorium is new: one Heavy Thorium Ore for one Heavy Thorium Bar, trivial from 300 to 315. Alchemy's Transmute: Arcanite takes one Thorium Bar and one Arcane Crystal for one Arcanite Bar at 275 to 290.

Vendor prices from the client tell you how Blizzard rates each item. Thorium Ore 2 silver50 copper, Thorium Bar 6 silver, Heavy Thorium Ore 3 silver75 copper, Heavy Thorium Bar 25 silver, Arcane Crystal 20 silver and Arcanite Bar 50 silver. A Heavy Thorium Bar vendors for more than four Thorium Bars. That gap is a strong hint about where it sits in the crafting chain.

Who buys thorium

Thorium Bar is the biggest metal market in the game by a long way: 2,640 bars to craft every recipe entry once, and 917 of those bars sit in recipes that are new to Forever. Even if you drop the 18 older entries whose product the extract does not resolve, 2,226 bars remain. Heavy Thorium carries the same caveat: 20 of its 42 recipes are the unresolved Justice and Glory pieces, so 279 of its 549 bars sit in recipes with a known product. Heavy Thorium is entirely new, and every one of its 42 recipes is a Forever addition.

Where the new thorium goes

Most of the 917 new thorium bars land in two places. The first is the top end of the five-version armour family that started with bronze and continued through iron and steel: Justicar's, Officer's, Prefect's, Sentinel's and Warder's. At thorium level it adds Wristguards (sixteen bars, skill 250 to 275), Gloves (eight bars, 255), Sabatons (twenty bars, 260 to 280) and a Waistguard (twenty-four bars, 270 to 290). Across all five versions that is 340 Thorium Bars to make each piece once, and every piece also asks for grinding stones, Sandpaper, Sulfuric Acid and its flavour reagent.

The second is a new Blessed Plate set built on Blue Sapphire. It has eight pieces (Boots, Pauldrons, Gauntlet, Bracers, Belt, Leggings, Helm and Chest), and together they take 204 Thorium Bars. The Leggings alone ask for forty, the Chest for thirty-six. A blacksmith who wants that set crafted once needs more thorium than most miners bring to market in a week.

The old Classic thorium recipes are all still in the client too: the Thorium armour sets, the Enchanted Thorium pieces, Dawn's Edge and the rest. That is why the per-recipe total is so large. Thorium is not a niche metal for a few famous items in Forever. It is the base layer of almost every high-level Blacksmithing recipe, old and new.

The Arcane Crystal math

Arcane Crystal looks like a small market on the table above: three recipes, six crystals. That is misleading, and it is the most useful number on this page.

Arcane Crystal goes into Transmute: Arcanite. Every Arcanite Bar in the game starts as one Thorium Bar plus one Arcane Crystal. The client lists 88 recipes that take Arcanite Bars, 913 bars in total if each is crafted once. So the real demand for Arcane Crystal is not six. Counting every entry, it is 919: the 913 crystals hidden inside Arcanite, plus the six used directly.

There is an honest catch in that count. Forty-six of the 88 Arcanite entries do not resolve a product item in our extract: the twenty new Justice and Glory pieces, plus 26 older Blacksmithing and Engineering entries, mostly late-raid patterns such as the Obsidian weapons and Desecration, whose items this client build does not resolve. A few of those are second copies of a recipe that also appears with a product. If you keep only the 42 recipes whose product the client resolves, the Arcanite total drops to 365 bars. So the defensible range is roughly 370 to 919 Arcane Crystals to craft every Arcanite recipe once. Even the low end is more than sixty times the six crystals the reagent table shows.

The 21 new Arcanite recipes are almost all from one new family: Justice and Glory plate pieces at skill 320 to 330, each asking for two to four Arcanite Bars, twelve to eighteen Heavy Thorium Bars, three to five Malleable Essence of Nature and one Elemental Flux. One caveat: our build 70124 extract lists these twenty recipes but does not resolve their product items, so we cannot yet say what the finished pieces look like or whether all twenty ship at launch. That family ties Arcane Crystal, Thorium and the new Heavy Thorium into one bill. In Classic, Arcanite demand came mostly from a few famous weapons. In Forever, it also comes from a whole set of armour.

Heavy Thorium and the new alloys

Heavy Thorium is the Forever addition that matters most for a high-level miner. It feeds three things.

Two more new alloys appear here. Legionite Bar comes from Alchemy's Transmute: Legionite, one Heavy Thorium Bar plus one Fel Crystal. Azerothium Bar comes from a new Mining smelt, Smelt Azerothium, at 275: two Pitchblende and one Coal. Azerothium shows up in fourteen new recipes across Blacksmithing, Engineering and Enchanting. New in Forever: the Molten Foundry

Mining gets three camp objects in the Forever client. The top one is Molten Foundry: five Thorium Bars, two Dense Stone and one Truesilver Bar at skill 300. The client labels it Tier 3, after Lodestone (Tier 1, copper) and Rock Garden (Tier 2, iron and silver). Blizzard's Camping description says a Basic Campfire holds up to three crafted objects, one per player, on a one-hour cooldown. For a thorium miner, the Foundry is a small but steady sink for bars and for Dense Stone, which scanned at 1 gold4 silver on the beta, far above its 2 silver50 copper vendor price.

Sell or smelt

1. Always keep Arcane Crystals or sell them high. Every Arcanite Bar needs one. If you are not an alchemist, list them; do not vendor them.
2. Smelt Thorium to 250, then sell bars. Smelt Thorium is a skill-up at 250, and bars feed far more recipes than ore.
3. Smelt Heavy Thorium. The bar vendors for almost seven times the ore, and every recipe that uses it is new, so there is no old stock on the market.
4. Keep Dense Stone. It feeds the Molten Foundry, Dense Grinding Stones and the new Swiftstrike Shot. It is not junk.
5. Pair with an alchemist. If a friend runs Transmute: Arcanite, your Thorium and Arcane Crystal become one of the most valuable bars in the game.

Where thorium grows

The beta client has no maps for these zones yet, so the banners show continent art. In Classic Era, thorium veins sat in the level 50 to 60 zones: Winterspring, Un'Goro Crater, Silithus, Felwood, Azshara, the Burning Steppes and the Eastern and Western Plaguelands, with rich thorium veins giving most Arcane Crystals. We do not know yet where Heavy Thorium Ore spawns in Forever; the client names the item but not its location. Mount Hyjal, the new high-level Forever zone, is the natural suspect, but that is a guess until someone logs a node.

What to watch on the Auction House

• Arcane Crystal and Arcanite Bar together. If Arcanite climbs faster than crystals, alchemists are the bottleneck. If crystals climb, miners are.
• Heavy Thorium Ore listings. The first sightings tell you where it spawns and how common it is.
• Pitchblende and Coal. They make Azerothium, and fourteen new recipes want it.
• Blue Sapphire. The Blessed Plate set needs one or two per piece. If sapphires get scarce, blacksmiths stall on that set and thorium demand from it slows, even if bars are plentiful.
• Malleable Essence of Nature. It is an epic reagent in the Justice, Glory and nature plate recipes. The client's own item text says it is acquired from disenchanting items from Hyjal Summit or Barrow Deeps, so its supply depends on raiders and enchanters, not miners. It gates how fast Heavy Thorium and Arcanite get used. Watch for it to appear on the market before you stockpile Heavy Thorium.

Is it worth your time?

Not on the beta: the level cap keeps everyone out. At launch, the thorium band is where the biggest crafting bills in the game live, and Forever made them bigger with Heavy Thorium, Legionite and Azerothium. A miner who reaches it with an alchemist friend and a plan for Arcane Crystals will hold the most valuable materials on the realm. No route has been walked, so there is no hourly figure here, only the inputs.
