The Best Midnight Profession for Gold, Ranked from Live Prices
Every Midnight crafting profession ranked by its best craft's reagent bill against its sale price, with the method shown, dated snapshots and gathering pairings.

The short answer
On our 2026-10-08 snapshot, Jewelcrafting had the best single crafts in Midnight: the higher rank
Sin'dorei Lens and
Kaleidoscopic Prism each cleared well over 140 gold per craft above their reagent bill. Alchemy came next on the strength of the higher rank raid flasks, then Blacksmithing on higher rank alloys, then Inscription, Engineering and Enchanting. Leatherworking cleared only a few gold on its best crafts, and Tailoring had no craft that beat its bill on one item; a tailor did better selling
Sunfire Silk raw. Every ranking cell below is a dated snapshot with the method shown, because these numbers move every day. The live strips show where each item sits right now.
How we ranked the professions
We did the same thing for every profession, so the ranking is a fair comparison.
- Bill. For each Midnight recipe, we priced every reagent at the grade our recipe table lists, from our US commodity tables, and added them up. Recipes come from our datamine of client build 12.1.0.69933.
- Sale. We read the Auction House price of what the recipe makes. Where a craft has two quality ranks, we used the higher rank, because that is the rank a crafter aims for with Concentration.
- Margin. Sale minus bill, for one item per craft. Our recipe table does not carry batch sizes, so a craft that makes several items per craft does better than its margin here.
- Rank. We ranked each profession by the margin of its best craft, and listed the runner up so you can see how deep the profession is.
This method leaves out three things on purpose: the Auction House cut, multicraft and how many units the market will absorb. All three matter. The margin is a ceiling for a single sale, not a promise.
The ranking
| Rank | Profession | Best craft (higher rank) | Bill (2026-10-08) | Sale (2026-10-08) | Margin per craft | Runner up and its margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jewelcrafting | Sin'dorei Lens | 59 gold5 silver | 213 gold72 silver | 154 gold67 silver | Kaleidoscopic Prism, 143 gold73 silver |
| 2 | Alchemy | Flask of the Blood Knights | 295 gold60 silver | 387 gold98 silver | 92 gold38 silver | Flask of the Magisters, 61 gold24 silver |
| 3 | Blacksmithing | Sterling Alloy | 88 gold84 silver | 163 gold | 74 gold16 silver | Gloaming Alloy, 71 gold16 silver |
| 4 | Enchanting | Gleeful Glamour: Haranir | 2 gold72 silver | 77 gold | 74 gold28 silver | Gleeful Glamour: Mag'har Orc, 27 gold43 silver |
| 5 | Inscription | Codified Azeroot | 130 gold68 silver | 187 gold94 silver | 57 gold26 silver | Missive of Perception, 52 gold12 silver |
| 6 | Engineering | Soul Sprocket | 62 gold74 silver | 111 gold81 silver | 49 gold7 silver | Song Gear, 4 gold7 silver |
| 7 | Leatherworking | Silvermoon Weapon Wrap | 16 gold18 silver | 22 gold15 silver | 5 gold97 silver | Scalewoven Hide, 4 gold18 silver |
| 8 | Tailoring | Imbued Bright Linen Bolt | 3 gold54 silver | 5 gold80 silver | 2 gold26 silver | no other craft above its bill |
We ranked Enchanting fourth rather than third even though its top margin edges out Blacksmithing by about twelve silver. The Haranir glamour market is a handful of listings, and its runner up was far lower, so Enchanting has less depth than Blacksmithing, where both alloys cleared about the same margin and trade in volume.
Profession by profession
Jewelcrafting. The lens and the prism were the two best crafts in Midnight on our snapshot. The lens risks very little: its bill was about 59 gold. The weakness is everything else. Plain cuts sold below raw gem plus Gemdust, and every flawless cut and diamond lost money to the Petrified Root. A jeweller earns from a narrow set of crafts.
Alchemy. All four raid flasks cleared a margin at the higher rank on Silver herbs, and the Wondrous Synergist looked strong too, though its bill was partial. Alchemy's strength is steady demand: raiders burn flasks every week. Its weakness is the Lotus, which was 63 to 91 percent of a flask bill and swings widely.
Blacksmithing. Both alloys roughly doubled their bill at the higher rank. Blacksmithing also has the deepest order business, because its plate armor and weapons are mostly alloy and move through crafting orders; none of them had an Auction House price in our tables. On our snapshot lower rank alloys were cheaper to buy than to smelt.
Enchanting. A few glamours sold for many times their tiny bill, but most races sold near 1 gold. The real enchanting money is in Dawn Crystals from disenchanting epics; a lower grade crystal sold for about a hundred times its vendor price.
Inscription. Codified Azeroot and the Missive of Perception both cleared about 50 gold or more. The Perception missive did it at whatever rank our table priced, which makes it the most forgiving good craft in the profession. Inscription also benefits from milling cheap herbs: Silver Sanguithorn was close to worthless as an herb on our snapshot.
Engineering. The higher rank Soul Sprocket was a clear winner. Every finished gadget we could price sold below its parts, so engineers earn from parts and gear orders.
Leatherworking. The wrap and Scalewoven Hide cleared a few gold each. The biggest leatherworking lesson was a negative one: an Infused Scalewoven Hide was worth less than the Majestic Hide inside it, so skinners should sell
Majestic Hide raw.
Tailoring. No priced tailoring craft beat its bill by more than a couple of gold on one item. The rare cloth bolts lost more than half their cloth's value. A tailor's best move on our snapshot was to sell Sunfire Silk and Arcanoweave raw and fill gear orders.
Gathering pairings
Most players run one crafting and one gathering profession. The pairings below match each crafter to the gatherer that feeds its best crafts. The gathered items with the biggest prices on our snapshot are shown, because a gatherer earns even on days when crafting does not.
| Crafting profession | Pair with | Why | Gathered item to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jewelcrafting | Mining | Ore for prospecting, the source of raw gems according to player reports | Higher grade ore, live 24 gold36 silver |
| Alchemy | Herbalism | All flask and potion herbs plus the Lotus | Nocturnal Lotus, live 264 gold96 silver |
| Blacksmithing | Mining | Copper, tin and silver ore for alloys | Dazzling Thorium, live 8 gold85 silver |
| Inscription | Herbalism | Cheap Silver herbs to mill | Silver Sanguithorn, live 47 silver |
| Engineering | Mining | Copper and tin for Song Gear and Soul Sprocket | Umbral Tin Ore, live 5 gold65 silver |
| Leatherworking | Skinning | Leather, scales and special finds | Majestic Hide, live 1,736 gold66 silver |
| Enchanting | any | Gear to disenchant comes from content, not nodes | Dawn Crystal, live 97 gold97 silver |
| Tailoring | any | Cloth drops from humanoids for everyone | Sunfire Silk, live 54 gold60 silver |
Note how much value sits on the gathering side. On our snapshot a single Majestic Hide sold for 1,750 gold5 silver and a Nocturnal Lotus for 249 gold. We have not walked or timed any gathering route, so we cannot say how often you will find them, but one Majestic Hide was worth more than ten times the best single craft margin in the ranking above.

How to choose
- If you want steady, repeatable income, pick Alchemy with Herbalism. Flask demand comes back every raid week.
- If you want the best margins and do not mind a narrow craft list, pick Jewelcrafting with Mining. Lenses and prisms led the table.
- If you like filling orders, pick Blacksmithing, Leatherworking or Tailoring. Their epic gear had no Auction House price in our tables, so it moves through orders, and the bills are large.
- If you want the lowest risk, pick Inscription with Herbalism. The inks and the Perception missive are cheap to make and the herbs are cheap to mill.
- Whatever you pick, put Concentration on the biggest rank gap you can reach. The Concentration page ranks every craft by that gap.
What the ranking does not show
A margin table rewards the single best craft, and that is only part of what makes a profession good for gold. Three other things matter, and they pull the ranking in different directions.
Volume. A craft that clears 150 gold but sells two a day earns less than one that clears 50 gold and sells twenty. Flasks and alloys trade in volume; the Haranir glamour and Darkmoon Aces trade in handfuls. That is why Alchemy and Blacksmithing are more reliable earners than their rank alone suggests.
Order work. Professions whose gear moves through orders, Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and Tailoring, earn from fees that never appear on the Auction House. We hold no data on order fees, so the ranking cannot credit them. A tailor with a busy order book can out earn a jeweller whose lenses sit unsold.
Startup cost. Some professions need expensive reagents before they earn anything. A flask craft risks about 300 gold to 400 gold in reagents; a lens risks about 59 gold; a missive about 97 gold. If you are starting with little gold, the cheap crafts let you build a bank before you take on Lotus sized bills.
Switching professions
If your current profession sits low on the table, think before you drop it. Specialization points and recipe knowledge take a long time to rebuild, and the table can change with one patch. A better first step is often to change your gathering profession to one that feeds a stronger crafter on an alt, or to lean on the one or two good crafts your profession does have. Every profession on this table had at least one craft that cleared its bill at the higher rank, except Tailoring, whose best path was raw cloth and orders.
Redo the ranking yourself
You can rebuild this table any day in a few minutes. Open each profession page in this series, read the live strip for the best craft's higher rank, and subtract the bill shown there after updating its biggest line to today's price: the Lotus for flasks, the alloys for plate, the Gemdust for lenses and prisms. The order rarely changes much from day to day, but the gaps between professions do.
Risks: why this ranking will change
Every number here is a single day's snapshot. Patches change recipes, seasons change demand, and one player dumping a stack can halve a thin market. The Lotus, Petrified Root and Tormented Tantalum are shared across several professions, so a move in any of them reorders the middle of this table at once. Treat the ranking as a starting point and recheck the live strips on each profession page before committing a lot of gold.

How this guide was written
Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. Read the full method or the about page.
