The short answer

Midnight Blacksmithing is an alloy business. Every plate armor piece and weapon on our recipe table is built mostly from Gloaming Alloy and Sterling Alloy, so the alloy price decides almost everything. At the higher rank both alloys pay well: Gloaming Alloy sells for 155 gold and Sterling Alloy for 164 gold1 silver, about double their bill on 2026-10-08. At the lower rank both alloys sold for less than their bill. The surprise is in the chain: on our snapshot, lower rank alloys were cheaper to buy than to smelt from ore yourself. So a smith should spend Concentration on alloys to sell at the higher rank, and buy lower rank alloys for gear crafting orders.

The chain: ore, ingot, alloy

Our datamine of client build 12.1.0.69933 lays out a three step chain. Copper ore becomes an ingot. Ingots plus tin ore make Gloaming Alloy; ingots plus silver ore make Sterling Alloy. Every step also eats Luminant Flux, a cheap flux.

StepRecipeReagents

2aGloaming Alloy6 Umbral Tin Ore, 3 Refulgent Copper Ingot, 4 Luminant Flux
2bSterling Alloy6 Brilliant Silver Ore, 3 Refulgent Copper Ingot, 4 Luminant Flux

So each alloy holds fifteen copper ore and six of tin or silver ore, plus ten flux in total. Here are the ores at both grades:

On 2026-10-08 the three lower grade ores sat between 4 gold and 5 gold, and the higher grade ores between 24 gold and 27 gold. Dazzling Thorium, the rare ore, sold for 8 gold3 silver.

Gloaming Alloy82 gold84 silver62 gold154 gold1.340.54
Sterling Alloy88 gold84 silver75 gold97 silver163 gold1.170.55

The break-even yield is the bill divided by one unit's sale price: the number of items one craft must produce to pay for itself. The alloy bills above use ingots bought on the market at 18 gold80 silver. Every row tells the same story: the higher rank is worth about double the bill, and the lower rank is worth a little less than the bill. The gap between ranks, roughly 2.5 times for the ingot and Gloaming Alloy and 2.1 times for Sterling Alloy, is why smiths treat alloys as their main Concentration target.

Smelt your own, or buy?

Now price the chain from ore instead of from market ingots. Making your own three ingots costs 71 gold1 silver in ore and flux at our snapshot prices, against 56 gold40 silver for three bought ingots.

Gloaming Alloy82 gold84 silver97 gold45 silver62 goldBuy it
Sterling Alloy88 gold84 silver103 gold45 silver75 gold97 silverBuy it

On 2026-10-08 a lower rank Gloaming Alloy on the Auction House cost 35 gold45 silver less than smelting one from ore. The likely cause, which we have not measured, is smiths crafting alloys for skill or chasing the higher rank and dumping the lower rank results. For you it means two things.

  1. Do not smelt lower rank alloys for your own gear crafts. Buy them.
  2. Smelt only when you are aiming at the higher rank, where the alloy sells for about double the bill.

If you mine your own ore, the same logic applies with a twist. Your ore is worth its Auction House price, so the ore you would put into a lower rank alloy is better sold as ore. Run the chain only with the Concentration you have.

Plate armor and weapons: where the alloys go

Our recipe table lists Midnight plate armor and weapons in a few families. Every one of them is mostly alloy. Our tables held no Auction House price for these pieces on our snapshot, so this section gives the bills and the alloy share, not a margin.

PieceReagentsBill (2026-10-08)Alloy share
Thalassian Competitor's Sword2 Gloaming Alloy, 1 Silvermoon Weapon Wrap, 8 Luminant Flux147 gold97 silver84 percent
Bloomforged Claw8 Gloaming, 6 Sterling, 1 Weapon Wrap, 1 Tormented Tantalum, 2 Dazzling Thorium1,147 gold25 silver83 percent

Knight-Commander's Palisade10 Gloaming, 10 Sterling, 1 Weapon Wrap, 1 Dazzling Thorium, 1 Tormented Tantalum1,526 gold91 silver90 percent

The alloy share is the alloy lines divided by the bill, using lower rank alloys at 62 gold and 75 gold97 silver. Two things follow. First, the Tormented Tantalum at 228 gold50 silver is the second biggest line in every epic piece, and it is the one reagent you cannot smelt. Second, because the alloys are 80 to 90 percent of every bill, the quality of a crafted piece is mostly about the alloys you put in. That is why gear customers pay extra for higher rank alloys, and why smiths fill gear orders where the customer brings them.

Tools and small crafts

A handful of smaller crafts trade on the Auction House:

CraftBill (2026-10-08)Sale (2026-10-08)Break-even yield
Refulgent Repair Hammer21 gold46 silver19 gold98 silver1.07
Thalassian Skeleton Key41 gold94 silver29 gold75 silver1.41
Refulgent Weightstone926 gold68 silver with two Petrified Root7 gold56 silver123

The Repair Hammer runs at about cost and is fine for skill ups. The Skeleton Key loses about a quarter of its bill. The Refulgent Weightstone is a warning: two Petrified Roots at 350 gold54 silver each turn it into a 900 gold plus craft that sold for under 8 gold. Whatever its real batch size, do not make it for the market.

Profession tools, the Sun-Blessed line, mostly take five Sterling Alloy, two Dazzling Thorium and one Majestic Claw, and cost about 447 gold each. Two break the pattern: the Blacksmith's Toolbox swaps the claw for a Majestic Fin, and the Leatherworker's Toolset needs a Majestic Hide, which took its bill to 2,149 gold1 silver. These are usually crafted to order.

Where smiths get their ore

All three Midnight ores and Dazzling Thorium come from mining nodes in the outdoor zones, according to miners. We have not walked or timed a mining route for this page.

Midnight ore loop for a smith

Not walked yet

No hourly gold figure is published here until this route has been walked end to end with a timer and a full loot log. Until then this page gives you the inputs (live prices and what drops) and leaves the arithmetic to you.

What to do first

  1. Spend every point of Concentration on Gloaming and Sterling Alloy and sell the higher rank results.
  2. Buy lower rank alloys from the market for gear crafting orders; on our snapshot they were cheaper than smelting.
  3. Keep a stack of Luminant Flux; at 61 silver it never decides a margin.
  4. Take plate and weapon work through crafting orders, where the customer brings the alloys and the Tantalum.
  5. Never craft Refulgent Weightstones for the market.

Risks and what to watch on the Auction House

Alloy prices follow gear crafting demand. Smiths report that they rise at the start of a season and when new recipes unlock, and fall as the market fills; our tables do not yet cover a season start. The lower rank alloy price can drop below ore cost for weeks, as it did on our snapshot, which is a buying chance if you have gear to craft. Higher rank alloys are a thinner market, so list them a few at a time. Tormented Tantalum is the other line to watch: a jump in its price adds directly to every epic piece. And because higher grade ores sold for five to six times lower grade ores, a mining change in a patch can move the higher rank alloy price quickly.

Reading the alloy market

Alloys are commodities, so the whole region shares one price for each rank. That makes them easy to watch and easy to misread. Here is what to look for on the strip at the top of the page.

The first thing is the gap between ranks. On our snapshot the higher rank of each alloy was worth a little over twice the lower rank. When that gap widens, more smiths turn their Concentration toward alloys, the higher rank supply grows, and the gap tends to close again; we have not yet tracked how fast. When the gap narrows below the point where a higher rank alloy covers its bill, stop crafting alloys for sale and hold your Concentration for orders.

The second thing is the lower rank price against your ore bill. When the lower rank alloy sells for less than the ore you would put into it, as both did on our snapshot, the market is telling you that someone else is smelting at a loss. Buy from them. When the lower rank alloy climbs above its ore bill, smelting your own becomes the cheaper way to stock up for orders.

The third thing is the 14-day range. A higher rank alloy near the top of its range is a good time to sell; near the bottom, hold your stock and craft something else. Because alloys never expire and stack well, holding a few through a slow week costs nothing but bag space.

A worked example: one week of Concentration

Suppose you have enough Concentration for a handful of crafts and a bank of lower grade ore. On our 2026-10-08 numbers, each Gloaming Alloy lifted to the higher rank turned a 82 gold84 silver bill into a 154 gold sale, about 71 gold of margin, and each Sterling Alloy turned 88 gold84 silver into 163 gold, about 74 gold. The two are close, so split your Concentration by whichever alloy the market is shorter on that day: list the one whose higher rank price is nearer its 14-day high.

Then use the ingots you did not need. A higher rank Refulgent Copper Ingot sold for 47 gold79 silver against a 23 gold67 silver bill, so leftover Concentration on ingots is not wasted either. The ingot gap is smaller in gold but larger in ratio, which suits a smith low on gold who wants low risk crafts.

Mistakes smiths make in Midnight

  • Smelting lower rank alloys for orders. The market sold them below ore cost on our snapshot.
  • Crafting epic plate on spec. None had an Auction House price, and the bills ran past 1,100 gold.
  • Forgetting the Tantalum. At 228 gold50 silver, it is the second biggest line in every epic piece. Ask the customer to bring it.
  • Making weightstones. Two Petrified Roots put the bill above 900 gold.
