Elemental Essences in WoW Forever: Fire, Water, Earth, Air

Every recipe that eats Essence of Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Living Essence in the WoW Forever beta client, the transmute web, the Alchemist's Stone bill and beta prices.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · WoW Forever beta, as of beta build 70291

The short answer

The five high level essences, Essence of Fire, Essence of Water, Essence of Earth, Essence of Air and Living Essence, are some of the most widely used reagents in the WoW Forever client: together they appear in 228 recipe entries across seven professions (First Aid has a single one). On 2026-10-08 none of them had a single beta listing, because the beta cap is far below the level of the creatures that drop them. The lower tier elementals do trade: Elemental Air listed at 98 silver98 copper and Elemental Earth at 19 silver72 copper, while Elemental Fire and Elemental Water sat near their vendor price. The headline from the client is Essence of Earth and Elemental Air: Forever adds 19 new recipes for the first and 17 for the second, more new demand than any other elemental reagent.

The recipe census

Our profession extract lists every recipe that takes each essence and elemental. Here is the full count, with the number of recipes new in Forever and the total quantity if every recipe were crafted once.

Essence of Water is the most used essence in the client at 73 recipes, led by Leatherworking with 25 and Tailoring with 21. Living Essence matches Essence of Fire on recipe count but needs more of itself per craft. And the "new in Forever" column tells you where the client grew: Essence of Earth (19 new), Elemental Air (17), Essence of Air (15), Elemental Earth (15) and Elemental Water (15).

What Forever added

The new recipes cluster into a few families, and they explain why some elementals matter more in Forever than in Classic.

Leatherworking's new mail and leather sets. The client adds a Stalker's set and a Skycaller's set, each in leather and mail pieces, plus a Charged Scorpid set. The Stalker's pieces take Elemental Air (one to eight per piece, with the Stalker's Mail Belt at eight). The Skycaller's pieces take Elemental Water in the same way, with the Skycaller's Leather Waistguard and Mail Belt at eight each. Those two sets account for most of the new Elemental Air and Elemental Water demand, and they sit between skill 155 and 290, so they arrive in the middle of the profession, not at the end.

Blacksmithing's new thorium plate. The Enriched Thorium Breastplate and Helm, Martyr's Legplates and the Goregasher Grips, Stompers and Support all take Essence of Fire, three to ten per piece. The Enriched Thorium pieces also use new metals, Legionite Bar and Azerothium Bar, that do not exist in Classic.

Elemental WaterAuction House 5 silver25 copperVendor 4 silver
Elemental EarthAuction House 19 silver72 copperVendor 4 silver
Elemental FireAuction House 4 silver49 copperVendor 4 silver

The cheap elementals tell a clear story on the beta. Elemental Air at 98 silver98 copper was worth more than twenty-five Elemental Fire at 4 silver49 copper. Both vendor for 4 silver, so the difference is pure demand: Elemental Air feeds 17 new recipes and only 80 were listed, while Elemental Fire has no new recipes and sat at its vendor price.

Essence by essence: the biggest buyers

The census tells you how many recipes want each essence. This is which recipes want the most of it, which is where the bulk buying happens.

Essence of Water. The heaviest single crafts are two new Forever Leatherworking pieces, the Living Crown and Dawn Armor, at twenty Essence of Water each. After those come the Archmage tailoring line (the Embroidered Belt at twelve, the Belt at ten, the Robe at eight) and Hide of the Wild at ten. New Forever sets such as the Swarmtender's and Broodwatcher's pieces add smaller, steadier demand.

Living Essence. Two new Leatherworking recipes lead here too: the Timbermaw Tunic and the Living Crown, at twenty Living Essence each. Hide of the Wild and the Engineering Force Reactive Disk take twelve. Only three Living Essence recipes are new, but two of them are the biggest sinks in the list.

Essence of Air. The Shifting Cloak and its Mastercrafted version take twelve each, and a new Blacksmithing piece, the Champion's Legplates, takes ten. Most of the fifteen new Air recipes are weapons and thorium pieces that take a few each, plus a new Engineering transporter to Mount Hyjal.

Essence of Earth. Blacksmithing is the big buyer: Titanic Leggings, Thick Obsidian Breastplate, Stronghold Gauntlets and the Hammer of the Titans all take ten. The new recipes spread across Blacksmithing (the Hivethrasher's pieces and a Thorium Greatmace), Enchanting and the Earthenweave tailoring set.

Essence of Fire. The Sulfuron Hammer takes twenty-five, Martyr's Legplates ten, and the new thorium plate pieces three to six.

The Alchemist's Stone bill

The most famous essence sink is the Alchemist's Stone. Our extract gives its reagents as eight each of Essence of Fire, Earth, Air and Water, eight Living Essence, two Black Vitriol and four Black Lotus, at skill 315 to 330.

Forty essences go into one Alchemist's Stone. Even if every essence sold at its vendor price (and they never do at launch), the bill would be 32 elemental essences at 4 silver plus 8 Living Essence at 5 silver, or 1 gold68 silver of essences; the four Black Lotus at the 2026-10-08 listing would add 100 gold60 silver. The real point is the count: one stone soaks up forty essences, which is why alchemists chasing it buy essences in bulk.

The transmute web

Alchemy can turn some essences into others, and the client keeps the full Classic set of transmutes, all at skill 275 to 290:

TransmuteTurnsInto
Air to Fire1 Essence of AirEssence of Fire
Fire to Earth1 Essence of FireEssence of Earth
Earth to Water1 Essence of EarthEssence of Water

Water to Air1 Essence of WaterEssence of Air
Water to Undeath1 Essence of WaterEssence of Undeath
Undeath to Water1 Essence of UndeathEssence of Water
Elemental Fire (skill 301 to 310)1 Heart of FireElemental Fire

Follow the arrows and every essence can reach every other one through an alchemist. That has a direct effect on prices: no essence can stay far above the others for long, because an alchemist with a transmute cooldown will turn the cheap one into the expensive one. Essence of Earth and Essence of Water each have two transmutes out and two in, so they sit at the centre of the web, and Earth is also the essence with the most new Forever recipes. If you only hold one essence through launch, hold Earth.

Where they came from in Classic

The beta client does not tell us which creatures drop which essence, and nobody can reach them on the beta yet. Here is where Classic players found them, which is where we would look first in Forever:

  • Fire: fire elementals in Searing Gorge, Burning Steppes and Blackrock Depths, and around Un'Goro Crater's volcano.
  • Earth: earth elementals in Silithus, Un'Goro Crater and the Burning Steppes.
  • Air: air elementals in Silithus and Azshara.
  • Water: water elementals in Azshara, Winterspring and the Plaguelands.
  • Living Essence: living plant creatures in Un'Goro Crater, Felwood and Dire Maul.
  • Undeath: the undead of Stratholme, Scholomance and the Plaguelands.

Who buys essences: demand by profession

The census above counts recipes per essence. Turn it around and count by profession, and you find out who your customers actually are. We added up every essence line (Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Living Essence) in our profession extract (build 70124), and the total quantity each profession would need to make every recipe once:

ProfessionRecipes that take one of the fiveEssence linesEssences if each made onceShare of the 1,133 total
Leatherworking748636732 percent
Blacksmithing535529026 percent
Tailoring546125322 percent
Enchanting28371069 percent
Engineering1016696 percent
Alchemy812474 percent
First Aid111under 1 percent

The "essence lines" column is higher than the recipe column because some recipes take two or three different essences. The 1,133 total matches the census: 272 Water, 260 Living, 250 Fire, 198 Earth and 153 Air.

Our read of it: alchemists are famous essence buyers because of transmutes and the Alchemist's Stone, but by recipe weight they are the smallest real customer here. The three armour professions together account for about 80 percent of the essence demand in the client. That is where to aim your listings and your trade chat messages at launch.

  1. Price your first listings for leatherworkers. They have the most essence recipes and the largest total, and Living Essence and Water lead their bill.
  2. Expect blacksmiths to want Earth and Fire. Essence of Earth has 18 Blacksmithing recipes, more than any other profession uses it, and 19 of Earth's 52 recipes are new in Forever.
  3. Do not discount for alchemists. They buy for transmutes and the stone, which is real, but they are not the bulk of the market.

How to sell essences at launch

  1. Sell Elemental Air and Elemental Earth now if you have them. They are the cheap elementals with real new demand, and they already trade above vendor on the beta.
  2. Do not vendor Elemental Fire or Elemental Water. Even near vendor price, a listing costs you nothing if it does not sell.
  3. Bank every high essence you get in the first weeks. With no beta market at all, launch prices will start high.
  4. Hold Essence of Earth longest. It has the most new recipes and sits at the centre of the transmute web.
  5. Watch for alchemists. When a transmute makes one essence cheaper than another, the cheap one is about to rise.
  6. Sell Living Essence in eights. Many recipes take it in multiples, and the Alchemist's Stone takes exactly eight.

What to watch on the Auction House

  • The first essence listings. On 2026-10-08 there were none for any of the five high essences. Whoever lists first sets the price.
  • Elemental Air against the Stalker's set. If leatherworkers level through the new Stalker's recipes, Elemental Air rises further.
  • Elemental Water against the Skycaller's set. Same pattern, different element. On the beta it was still cheap.
  • Black Lotus. It gates the Alchemist's Stone and the big flasks. One listing on the beta is not a price.

Are essences worth farming?

At launch, yes, for anyone who can kill elementals at the level cap. They feed hundreds of recipes, Forever adds dozens more, and the transmute web keeps their prices tied together so no single essence collapses alone. On the beta they cannot be farmed at all. We have not walked an elemental route, so there is no rate here, only the inputs: who buys what, how much, and what the beta market showed.

Changelog

  • 2026-10-08: Review pass added demand by profession, corrected the profession count to seven and the Alchemist's Stone essence bill to include Living Essence at its own vendor price.
  • 2026-10-08: First version. Recipe counts, reagent quantities, transmutes and skill ranges from our beta profession extract (build 70124); item data as of beta build 70291; prices from player scans of the beta Auction House on 2026-10-08; essence sources labelled as Classic.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
