Blackrock Depths in WoW Forever: Materials and BoEs

Blackrock Depths on the WoW Forever beta: 21 encounters from the client, Dark Iron Ore and the eight-ore smelt, the Dark Iron Bar recipe list, Runecloth, plans and beta prices.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · WoW Forever beta, as of beta build 70291

The short answer

Blackrock Depths is the materials dungeon of the late game, and its signature material is Dark Iron Ore. On 2026-10-08 the beta scans had Dark Iron Ore at …, with only nine listed on one house. The Forever client's Smelt Dark Iron takes eight ore for one bar, so every Dark Iron Bar costs eight times the ore price before you even reach a forge. That bar feeds 30 recipes in the client, from the Dark Iron Plate chest to the Sulfuron Hammer. Add Runecloth from the Dark Iron dwarves, fire elementals for Heart of Fire and Essence of Fire, and three tradeable Blacksmithing plans, and you have a dungeon that pays gatherers and crafters more than it pays loot hunters. The client tunes it to level 48, well above the beta cap, so this is a launch plan with first prices attached.

What the client says about Blackrock Depths

Blackrock Depths is map 230 in the Forever client (folder BlackrockDepths, five players). The dungeon finder table has one entry (id 29) pointing at a content tuning row set to level 48 in build 70291. The client also lists a new "Emperor Dagran Thaurissan kills (Blackrock Depths)" statistic, and our diff of the beta and Era clients found a new area row named Blackrock Depths attached to map 230.

The encounter table lists 21 encounters, the same set as the Classic Era client. It is the longest encounter list of any five-player dungeon in this lane:

OrderEncounterOrderEncounter
1High Interrogator Gerstahn12Hurley Blackbreath
2Lord Roccor13Phalanx
3Houndmaster Grebmar14Ribbly Screwspigot

8Fineous Darkvire19Magmus
9Bael'Gar20Princess Moira Bronzebeard
10General Angerforge21Emperor Dagran Thaurissan
11Golem Lord Argelmach

Twenty-one encounters is a long run. For a gold farm that matters, because the value is spread across trash, ore veins and elementals rather than concentrated on one boss.

Dark Iron Ore: the smelting math

Our profession extract (build 70124) has one recipe that uses Dark Iron Ore: Smelt Dark Iron, skill 230, eight ore for one bar. The bar is where the demand lives.

On 2026-10-08 there were no Dark Iron Bars on any beta house, so the only floor we can set is the ore cost: 1 gold76 silver per bar before the Auction House cut. Any bar listed below that is a crafter selling at a loss.

The Forever client also carries a second item named Dark Iron Ore (Dark Iron Ore), vendor price 2 silver50 copper, item level 55, with no listing. The recipe uses 11370, the one the scans priced. If you see both in your bags, the one a forge accepts is the one to keep.

Who buys Dark Iron Bars

The extract lists 30 recipes that use Dark Iron Bar: 24 Blacksmithing, 6 Engineering, two of them new in Forever. Made once each, they would use 306 bars, which at eight ore per bar is 2,448 Dark Iron Ore. At the 2026-10-08 ore price that ore bill comes to 538 gold56 silver.

Here is the number to remember. A single Dark Iron Sunderer needs 26 bars, which is 208 Dark Iron Ore. At … per ore that is 45 gold76 silver of ore for one axe, before any other reagent. Dark Iron gear is expensive because the ore ratio is brutal, and that is good news for whoever mines it.

Tradeable plans

Three Blacksmithing plans tied to the Dark Iron line have no binding in the beta client, so they trade: Plans: Dark Iron Pulverizer, Plans: Dark Iron Sunderer and Plans: Dark Iron Plate. Each vendors for 30 silver. The other Dark Iron plans in the client, from Dark Iron Mail and Shoulders through to the Leggings, Reaver and Destroyer, are Bind on Pickup. In Classic, the three tradeable plans dropped inside Blackrock Depths; we have not confirmed their Forever source.

Plans: Dark Iron PulverizerAuction House …Vendor 30 silver
Plans: Dark Iron SundererAuction House …Vendor 30 silver
Plans: Dark Iron PlateAuction House …Vendor 30 silver

Of the three, Dark Iron Plate is the one we would expect to sell best: it is the highest level of the three in the client (item level 57) and the finished chest takes 20 bars, so a Blacksmith who buys it is committing to a lot of ore. No plan had a beta listing on 2026-10-08.

Dark Iron Residue is the other tradeable Dark Iron item: no binding, vendor 1 silver. In Classic it was a turn-in for a reputation faction. On the beta it had no listing.

Runecloth from the Dark Iron dwarves

The humanoids of Blackrock Depths drop Runecloth, and in Classic that made the dungeon a cloth source on the way through. We have not logged a Forever run.

On 2026-10-08, Runecloth listed at … (ten pieces on one house) and Bolt of Runecloth at 20 silver. The extract says a bolt takes five Runecloth, so five cloth at the scanned price would cost 2 gold50 silver against a bolt listed at 21 silver. That gap is too large to be real demand; it is a thin market where someone listed ten cloth high and someone else dumped bolts. Our Stratholme guide covers Runecloth demand in depth.

Fire and earth from the elementals

Blackrock Depths is full of fire elementals and golems. In Classic they were a source of Heart of Fire, Essence of Fire and Core of Earth. None of the three had a beta listing on 2026-10-08. Heart of Fire alone appears in 34 recipes in the extract (15 Blacksmithing, 13 Tailoring), eight of them new, and Essence of Fire in 54. Our elemental essences guide has the full recipe list.

Classic miners also took Thorium from the veins in and around the mountain. Thorium Ore listed at 77 silver and Dense Stone at 1 gold4 silver, each with only a handful on the market.

A Blackrock Depths materials run, step by step

  1. Go at level 50 or higher with a group. The client tunes the dungeon to 48 and the full run is 21 encounters long.
  2. Bring a miner. Dark Iron veins are the main material reason to be here.
  3. Loot every Dark Iron dwarf for Runecloth and anything tradeable.
  4. Kill the fire elementals you pass and keep every Heart of Fire and Essence of Fire.
  5. Smelt Dark Iron only when you know you can sell the bar above eight ore plus the cut. Otherwise sell the ore and let a Blacksmith carry the smelting risk.
  6. List the three tradeable plans if they drop. Vendor the soulbound plans and gear nobody can use.
  7. Bank Hearts of Fire and Essences. On the beta they had no market at all; at launch they will be among the first high level reagents crafters need.

Why the eight-to-one ratio shapes the whole market

Most smelting recipes in the Forever client are one ore for one bar. Copper, Tin, Iron, Mithril, Truesilver and Thorium all work that way in our extract. Dark Iron is the exception at eight to one, and that single number explains almost everything about how this material trades.

First, it makes Dark Iron Ore the bottleneck. A Blacksmith who wants one Dark Iron Plate chest needs 160 ore, not 20. There is no cheap way around that, so ore holders have the stronger hand.

Second, it makes the bar price sticky. Once crafters know a bar costs eight ore, they stop expecting cheap bars, and the bar price tends to settle at a multiple of the ore price rather than drifting down.

Third, it rewards patience. Dark Iron recipes sit between skill 260 and 350 in the extract, so the buyers are high level Blacksmiths and Engineers who only exist once a realm has been open for a while. Ore mined in the first weeks after launch will meet more buyers a month later than it does on day one.

If you mine, the practical upshot is simple: do not sell Dark Iron Ore cheaply just because there are few buyers at first. The buyers are coming, and each of them needs a lot of it.

What to watch on the Auction House

  • The first Dark Iron Bar listing. No bars on 2026-10-08 means the first seller sets the price. Anything under eight times the ore price is a bargain.
  • Dark Iron Ore depth. Nine on one house is nothing. Watch the count grow as level 50 characters arrive.
  • Heart of Fire and Essence of Fire. No supply on the beta and deep recipe demand. Their first prices will be high.
  • Plan prices. Three tradeable plans with a 30 silver vendor floor. Dark Iron Plate should lead.

Is Blackrock Depths worth farming?

For a miner who can reach the Dark Iron veins, it is one of the most valuable materials runs in the game, because every bar eats eight ore and the recipes eat dozens of bars. For a crafter it is the supply line for Dark Iron gear. For a pure loot run it is long, and most boss drops are soulbound. We have not walked or timed a Forever run, so no rate is printed here, only the inputs: the ore ratio, the recipe demand and the first beta prices.

Changelog

  • 2026-10-08: First version. Map, encounter, statistic, dungeon finder and content tuning rows from beta build 70291; plan bindings from the beta item table; recipes and smelting from our beta profession extract (build 70124); prices from player scans of the beta Auction House on 2026-10-08; drop sources and the Black Forge rule labelled as Classic.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
