Dire Maul Tribute in WoW Forever: What the Chest Is Worth

The Dire Maul North tribute run on the WoW Forever beta: encounters from the client, which chest loot can be traded, the Ogre Suit bill, the new Craftsman's Writ and the Librams.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · WoW Forever beta, as of beta build 70291

The short answer

A tribute run in Dire Maul North means killing King Gordok while leaving his guards alive, and in Classic that earned a chest whose size grew with every guard you spared. In WoW Forever the North wing is still there, with all seven of its encounters in the client, but most of what the wing drops is Bind on Pickup. The tradeable value sits in a short list: three epic Leatherworking patterns with no binding, the Librams found across Dire Maul, the Gordok Ogre Suit itself, and a new Forever item, Craftsman's Writ: Gordok Ogre Suit, which is tradeable and rare quality. None of these had beta listings on 2026-10-08, because nobody on the beta can reach level 54. This page tells you what to sell when they appear, and what not to bother listing.

What the client says about Dire Maul North

Dire Maul is one map in the Forever client (map 429, folder DireMaul, five players). The dungeon finder table has a separate Dire Maul North entry (id 37), and like the East and West entries it points at a content tuning row set to level 54 in build 70291.

The encounter table lists seven bosses that make up the North wing in the Classic layout:

Order on map 429EncounterRole in a tribute run (Classic)
8Guard Mol'darGuard; spare him
9Stomper KreegGuard; spare him, he sells drinks
10Guard FengusGuard; spare him
11Guard Slip'kikGuard; spare him
12Captain KromcrushGuard captain; spare him
13Cho'Rush the ObserverKill with the king
14King GordokThe kill that triggers the tribute

Forever adds a new statistic, "King Gordok kills (Dire Maul)", to the achievement tables. The rest of the list is unchanged from the Classic Era client.

The loot census: what in Dire Maul can be traded

We looked at the block of Dire Maul items the Classic Era client stores between ids 18490 and 18538, then checked each binding flag. Of the 39 armour, weapon and trinket pieces in that block, 33 are Bind on Pickup. The six that are Bind on Equip are all crafted Leatherworking items, which the beta client names and still marks Bind on Equip:

ItemQualityBinding (beta client)Vendor price
Chromatic CloakEpicEquip2 gold30 silver
Hide of the WildEpicEquip2 gold8 silver
Shifting CloakEpicEquip2 gold9 silver
Girdle of InsightRareEquip1 gold41 silver
Mongoose BootsRareEquip2 gold13 silver
Swift Flight BracersRareEquip1 gold71 silver

Their patterns split the same way. The three rare patterns are Bind on Pickup, so only the looter can learn them. The three epic patterns, Pattern: Chromatic Cloak, Pattern: Hide of the Wild and Pattern: Shifting Cloak, have no binding at all in the beta client and vendor for 4 gold each. Those three are the most valuable tradeable objects tied to this part of the game. We have not confirmed where they drop in Forever, only that they trade.

Pattern: Chromatic CloakAuction House …Vendor 4 gold
Pattern: Hide of the WildAuction House …Vendor 4 gold
Pattern: Shifting CloakAuction House …Vendor 4 gold

Everything else in the block, from Kromcrush's Chestplate to the Rod of the Ogre Magi, is soulbound in the Era client. Those pieces are upgrades and vendor silver. The best vendor values in the block are weapons such as Treant's Bane, Monstrous Glaive and Barbarous Blade, each between 7 gold and 10 gold at a vendor.

The Gordok Ogre Suit and the new Writ

Gordok Ogre Suit is the item most players remember from tribute runs. It has no binding, requires level 55, and lets you walk among the ogres in disguise. Our profession extract (build 70124) has four recipes for it, a normal and a "Synthetic" version in both Tailoring and Leatherworking, all at skill 285 to 295 and all with the same reagents:

ReagentCountBindingPrice on 2026-10-08Line total
Rugged Leather4none5 silver20 silver
Bolt of Runecloth2none21 silver42 silver
Rune Thread1none65 silver65 silver
Ogre Tannin1Pickupcannot be boughtn/a

The tradeable part of the bill came to 1 gold27 silver on 2026-10-08. The catch is the Ogre Tannin: it is Bind on Pickup in both clients, and in Classic it came from the tribute area itself. So the only person who can make an Ogre Suit is a tailor or leatherworker who did the run and looted the Tannin. That is a supply limit no amount of gold can buy around, and it is why the suit is worth listing when you have one.

Forever adds a twist: Craftsman's Writ: Gordok Ogre Suit, a rare quality item with no binding that requires level 10. It belongs to a new family of Craftsman's Writs in the beta client, alongside Writs for Felcloth Boots, a Runecloth Bag, Runecloth Boots and a set of potions and elixirs. The low-level Writs already trade: on 2026-10-08 the Elixir of Ogre's Strength Writ listed at 99 silver and the Elixir of Wisdom Writ at 1 gold55 silver. The client does not say what a Writ does when used. Our working theory is that it lets the holder commission or receive the named craft, which would make the Ogre Suit Writ a way around the Tannin limit. Until someone tests it, treat that as a guess.

Librams: Dire Maul's other tradeable

Dire Maul is also where Classic players found the Librams, books that a quest in the Library turns into head and leg enchantments. The beta client names eight Librams in this family, all uncommon, all level 50, all with no binding: Libram of Rapidity, Libram of Focus, Libram of Protection, plus Rumination, Constitution, Tenacity, Resilience and Voracity. None had a beta listing on 2026-10-08.

Libram of ProtectionAuction House …

In Classic, Rapidity, Focus and Protection were the valuable three, because they fed the quests for the most wanted enchantments. If Forever keeps those quests, those three are the Librams to sell. The other five were mostly vendor fodder; with no vendor price in the client, they are worth whatever a player will pay or nothing at all.

Running the tribute, step by step

This is the Classic method, which the Forever encounter list still supports. We have not tested the Forever server rules.

  1. Enter Dire Maul North at level 56 or higher with a group of five. The content tuning is 54.
  2. Use the Gordok Courtyard Key and Inner Door Key to reach the inner courtyard. Both are Bind on Pickup.
  3. Do not kill Guard Mol'dar, Stomper Kreeg, Guard Fengus, Guard Slip'kik or Captain Kromcrush. In Classic each one left alive added an item to the tribute.
  4. Kill Cho'Rush the Observer and King Gordok.
  5. Talk to Mizzle the Crafty to claim the tribute and open the chest. Roll on anything tradeable.
  6. Pick up the Ogre Tannin if your group has a tailor or leatherworker who can use it. It is soulbound and worthless to anyone else.
  7. Sell epic patterns, Librams and Ogre Suits. Vendor the soulbound gear nobody needs.

What a tribute is worth, in plain numbers

Because nothing tradeable from the North had a beta listing on 2026-10-08, we cannot price a full chest. We can say what it is made of:

  • Soulbound gear: most of what drops. Its value is the vendor price, between about 90 silver and 10 gold per item in the Era client.
  • Epic patterns: three with no binding and a 4 gold vendor floor. Any one of them is likely the single best sale from a run.
  • The Ogre Suit: limited by soulbound Tannin, so supply stays low; its tradeable reagents cost 1 gold27 silver on 2026-10-08.
  • The Writ: a new tradeable rare with unknown use. Price it against the low-level Writs once the first listings appear.

Who gets the most out of a tribute

Not every group member walks away with the same value, and it helps to know that before you form the group.

A leatherworker or tailor gets the most. They are the only ones who can use the soulbound Ogre Tannin, so every run is a chance at an Ogre Suit they can sell or wear. A leatherworker also has a direct use for the three epic patterns, rather than only a resale value.

A player gearing a main character gets the soulbound upgrades. The tribute chest in Classic was one of the better sources of pre-raid pieces at the level cap, and a good piece is worth more to the person wearing it than any vendor price.

A player who is purely farming gold gets the least, because the soulbound majority of the loot is only vendor silver for them. For that player the run is worth it only if the group agrees to roll fairly on the tradeable items, or if they are happy to trade their time for a shot at a pattern.

If you are building a group for gold, say so up front and agree how patterns, Librams and Writs are split. A five-way roll on a single epic pattern is fair, but it only works if everyone knows the rule before the chest opens.

What to watch on the Auction House

  • The first epic pattern listings. With three tradeable epic patterns in play, the first sellers set the price.
  • Craftsman's Writs. The low-level Writs traded between roughly one and three gold on the beta. Watch whether the Ogre Suit and Felcloth Writs follow.
  • Rune Thread. At 70 silver it was the most expensive line in the Ogre Suit bill. If it rises, so does every suit.
  • Libram demand. If Forever keeps the Library enchantment quests, Rapidity, Focus and Protection will be the first to sell.

Is the tribute run worth it?

For a group at the cap, yes: it is a fast run with a guaranteed chest and soulbound upgrades for everyone. For gold, the run is a lottery ticket on three epic patterns, a few Librams and an Ogre Suit, plus vendor silver from everything else. We have not walked or timed a Forever tribute, so there is no rate here. When we do, this page will list what the chest actually held.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
