The short answer
Midnight skinning gives you four Void-Tempered materials, and they are not worth the same. The two rare ones, Hide and Plating, carry most of the value: Void-Tempered Hide trades at 4 gold (Silver) and 3 gold98 silver (Gold), while the bulk Void-Tempered Leather sits at 85 silver and Scales at 61 silver. A skinning trip lives or dies on how many Hides and Platings you pull, so sell those with care and treat Leather and Scales as volume. Never vendor any of them: Leather and Scales vendor for 3 silver and Hide and Plating for 90 silver, which is a small slice of even the cheapest Auction House price in our 14-day history.
The four materials, and how they pair up
Our datamine lists eight item ids for this family: four materials, each in a Silver and a Gold grade. The Silver and Gold versions share an icon and a vendor price, and any recipe slot that asks for the material takes either grade. The grade you feed in nudges the quality of the finished item, which is why Gold sells for more.
The four split into two pairs, and the split tells you what you skinned:
| Material | Rarity | Comes from (player reports) | Vendor price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Void-Tempered Leather | common | leathery beasts, the usual skin | 3 silver |
| Void-Tempered Scales | common | scaly beasts, the usual skin | 3 silver |
| Void-Tempered Hide | rare | leathery beasts, as an occasional extra | 90 silver |
| Void-Tempered Plating | rare | scaly beasts, as an occasional extra | 90 silver |
Skinners report that furred and hided animals give Leather and the occasional Hide, while reptiles and other armored creatures give Scales and the occasional Plating. That pattern is consistent with the item icons in the client (a brown hide icon for Leather and Hide, a violet scale icon for Scales and Plating), but the drop tables themselves are not in the data we read, so treat the beast split as a player report, not a datamined fact.
There is also a ninth item, Fine Void-Tempered Hide, in the client. It has no Auction House price in our tables and no recipe uses it in our extract, so we leave it out of the money talk until it shows up on the market.
What each material sells for right now
Here are the eight ids side by side. The ratio column is our own: how many units of the bulk material you need to sell to match one rare unit, using the readings our tables held on 2026-10-08.
| Material | Silver now | Gold now | Silver 14-day range (2026-10-08) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Void-Tempered Leather | 85 silver | 1 gold15 silver | 1 silver to 87 silver |
| Void-Tempered Scales | 61 silver | 81 silver | 99 silver to 1 gold60 silver |
| Void-Tempered Hide | 4 gold | 3 gold98 silver | 4 gold35 silver to 13 gold81 silver |
| Void-Tempered Plating | 88 silver | 1 gold99 silver | 1 gold to 3 gold94 silver |
On 2026-10-08 one Silver Hide at 13 gold50 silver was worth about 13 Silver Leather at 99 silver, and one Silver Plating at 3 gold75 silver was worth roughly two Silver Scales at 2 gold4 silver. In plain terms: Hide is the prize, Plating is a modest bonus, and Scales hold their value better than Leather. If a zone gives you more scaly beasts than leathery ones, that is not a bad trade, because Scales were worth about twice as much as Leather on the day we checked.
Silver against Gold
The grade gap is much smaller here than it is for herbs. On 2026-10-08 Gold Leather sold for barely more than Silver Leather, and Gold Hide for about a fifth more than Silver Hide. Plating was the exception: the Gold grade traded at roughly two and a half times the Silver grade. The reason is the buyer. Bulk Leather and Scales mostly go into big stacks where the crafter cares about count, not grade, so Silver is good enough. Plating goes into Sin'dorei Armor Banding and Scalewoven Hide, which sit in the expensive end of the crafting chain, and crafters chasing the top result pay for the better grade there. If your skinning setup gives you a good share of Gold Plating, list it on its own and never let it go at the Silver price.
Who buys Leather and Scales: one profession, a lot of volume
Every one of the recipes that consume Void-Tempered Leather is a Leatherworking recipe: 70 of them in our extract. Scales go into 67 recipes, again all Leatherworking. No other profession touches the bulk skins. That makes leatherworkers your only buyer, and it means the bulk market follows one thing: how many leatherworkers are crafting gear this week.
The quantities are what matter. We added up the Leather slot of every one of those 70 recipes: crafting one of each would eat 4,135 Void-Tempered Leather. The same sum for Scales across 67 recipes is 3,615. The split inside that total is the useful part:
| Recipe group | Recipes | Leather needed for one of each | Scales needed for one of each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crafted epics that also need Infused Scalewoven Hide | 26 (Leather) / 23 (Scales) | 2,785 | 2,345 |
| Thalassian Competitor's PvP sets (leather and chain) | 16 | 360 | 360 |
| Everything else (profession gear, bags, kits, drums, early armor) | 28 | 990 | 910 |
So roughly two thirds of all Leather demand sits in the high-end crafted gear: pieces like the Silvermoon Agent's set, the Farstrider's set and the World Tender's set, each asking for 100 to 200 Leather or Scales plus a Sin'dorei Armor Banding and an Infused Scalewoven Hide. When those pieces are in demand, bulk Leather moves in big lots. When they are not, Leather piles up and the price sinks toward the bottom of its range, which is exactly what our 14-day history shows for the Silver grade.
Who buys Hide and Plating: four professions, small counts
The rare skins have fewer buyers per recipe but a wider spread of them. Void-Tempered Hide is a reagent in 20 recipes across four professions; Plating appears in 14 recipes across three.
| Recipe | Profession | Hide | Plating | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scalewoven Hide | Leatherworking | 1 | 1 | the intermediate behind all the crafted epics |
| Sin'dorei Armor Banding | Leatherworking | 0 | 1 | also needs 1 Fantastic Fur and 2 Mote of Light |
| Thalassian Competitor's leather pieces (8) | Leatherworking | 1 each | 0 | PvP set |
| Thalassian Competitor's chain pieces (8) | Leatherworking | 0 | 1 each | PvP set |
| Aetherlume Bands, Optics, Runners | Engineering | 2 each | 0 | |
| Aetherlume Bracelets, Clonkers, Vision Shroud | Engineering | 0 | 2 each | |
| Sin'dorei Jeweler's Loupes | Jewelcrafting | 1 | 0 | profession tool |
| Box of Rocks | Alchemy | 18 | 18 | the single biggest sink per craft |
| Plush Haranir Leather Pillow, Stitched Haranir Rug | Leatherworking | 4 each | 0 | housing decor |
The row to remember is Scalewoven Hide: one Hide plus one Plating makes one
Scalewoven Hide, and Scalewoven Hide is the base for the Infused version that every crafted epic needs. That single recipe ties the two rare skins together, so their prices tend to move as a pair. The other standout is Box of Rocks, an Alchemy recipe that wants 18 of each plus 8 Fantastic Fur. One crafter working through a stack of those can pull a visible chunk of Hide off the market in an afternoon.
Should you turn Hide and Plating into Scalewoven Hide?
If you are a skinner with Leatherworking, this is the first question you will ask. The arithmetic on 2026-10-08:
| Grade | Hide | Plating | Inputs | Scalewoven Hide sells for | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 13 gold50 silver | 3 gold75 silver | 17 gold25 silver | 13 gold82 silver | about 80 percent of inputs back |
| Gold | 15 gold97 silver | 9 gold67 silver | 25 gold64 silver | 21 gold96 silver | about 86 percent of inputs back |
At those readings, crafting lost money: you got back less than the raw skins were worth. Run the same sum at the 14-day lows instead (Silver Hide 4 gold35 silver, Silver Plating 1 gold, Silver Scalewoven 9 gold) and it flips hard the other way. That swing is the lesson. The craft is only worth doing when the skins are cheap relative to the product, and you can see which side of the line you are on by comparing the three live prices in the strip at the top. Crafting stats such as multicraft or resourcefulness can change the result for a specialised leatherworker; we have not measured those effects, so we leave them out of the sum.
Where to skin
We have not walked and timed a skinning route in any Midnight zone yet, so this is where to look, not a promise of a yield. Zone levels below come from the client's content tuning data.

Voidstorm: Levels 88-90, Unknown, Zone ID 16648
Voidstorm is the top of the level range (88 to 90) and the zone this page's hero art comes from. Skinners report a mix of scaly and leathery creatures there, which makes it a good place to collect both Hide and Plating on one loop. Later in a patch, expect more competition as alts reach the zone.

Harandar: Levels 83-88, Unknown, Zone ID 15355
Harandar (83 to 88) is the other zone skinners mention most for beasts. Its Haranir theme also shows up in the recipe list: the Haranir decor pieces that eat Void-Tempered Hide are named after it.

Zul'Aman and Eversong Woods round out the outdoor zones. Eversong is the friendliest place to level the profession from scratch; the higher zones are where you go once you want rare skins in quantity.

How to sell a skinning haul
- Sort the bag. Leather, Scales, Hide and Plating are four separate markets, and each has two grades. That is eight listings, not one.
- List Hide first and with care. It is the most valuable piece of a normal trip and has the thinnest market, so post it in small batches across the week rather than one big stack.
- Compare Plating with Scalewoven Hide before you sell it. If Scalewoven Hide is near its 14-day high and Plating is near its low, a leatherworker friend will pay well for the pair.
- Hold Leather when it is near its 14-day low. Bulk leather demand comes in waves tied to crafted gear, and the low end of the range does not last.
- Never vendor. The vendor pays 3 silver for Leather and Scales and 90 silver for Hide and Plating, far under the market.
What to watch on the Auction House
- Hide and Plating together. They move as a pair because Scalewoven Hide needs one of each. A jump in one usually drags the other.
- Infused Scalewoven Hide. When it gets cheaper, crafted epics get cheaper to make, and Leather and Scales demand rises a few days later.
- Fantastic Fur. Sin'dorei Armor Banding needs one Fur and one Plating, and the Fur is by far the costlier input at 79 gold. Fur price swings change how many Bandings get made, which feeds back into Plating demand.
- Patch days. New crafted gear tiers reset the whole chain. Keep a small reserve of Hide through a patch.
