The short answer

Most Midnight food sold for less than its ingredients on the evening we checked. Of sixteen dishes with an Auction House price, only one, Void-Kissed Fish Rolls, sold above its reagent bill at that evening's prices. The culprit was the base ingredients: Plant Protein read 2 gold11 silver and Practically Pork read 9 silver, both far above their own 14-day highs. Re-run the same bills at 14-day lows and several dishes become worth cooking, led by Buttered Root Crab, Null and Void Plate and Glitter Skewers. So the cooking question in Midnight is a timing question: buy base ingredients when they are cheap, cook then, and sell into demand.

The base ingredients

Every Midnight dish is built on a few cheap ingredients plus, for the better dishes, a fish or a herb. The cheap ones decide whether a low-end dish pays, and they swing hard.

Plant Protein is the one to watch. It sits in thirteen recipes, including Blooming Feast and Harandar Celebration, and on 2026-10-08 it read 3 gold97 silver, well above its 14-day high of 2 gold90 silver and almost twenty times its 14-day low. Practically Pork showed the same jump: 92 silver against a 14-day high of 24 silver. When those two spike, every low-end dish that uses them turns unprofitable at once.

The recipe column is our own count, and it ranks the ingredients by how many buyers each one has. Tavern Fixings leads with 22 recipes, then Pouch of Spices with 17, Thalassian Fillet with 16, Butter with 14 and Plant Protein with 13. Those counts are per recipe, not per craft: a dish that takes ten Fillet counts once. Two things follow for a seller. First, Tavern Fixings and Spices are bought by almost every cook for almost every dish, so they rarely sit unsold, but each one is worth only silver, so the money is in volume, not margin. Second, Plant Protein has fewer recipes but sits in two feasts at ten per craft, so a single raid night of feast cooking can move it more than a week of everyday dishes. That is the likeliest reason it was the ingredient that jumped above its own 14-day high, though we cannot see buyer behaviour directly in our tables.

Every sellable dish, priced against its bill

These are the Midnight dishes our tables price. The bill uses that evening's reading for every ingredient. The ratio is what the dish sold for divided by its bill: above 1.0 means cooking paid.

Void-Kissed Fish Rolls stood alone. It needs no Plant Protein or Pork, only Fillet, vegetables, butter and fixings, all of which were near normal prices, and it sold for more than twice its bill. Everything at the bottom of the table uses Plant Protein heavily: Felberry Figs takes ten of them and recovered four percent of its cost.

The same bills at 14-day lows

Now the same exercise with every ingredient and every dish at its 14-day low. This is roughly what a patient cook who buys on quiet days would face.

Five dishes cross 1.0 when you buy low and sell even at the dish's own low. That is the real cooking opportunity in Midnight: not a single golden recipe, but a short list of dishes that pay when the base ingredients are cheap. Buttered Root Crab is the clearest. Its main ingredient, Root Crab, ranged from 25 silver to 95 silver, and the dish ranged from 5 gold to 15 gold45 silver. Bought low and sold mid-range, it doubles your money; bought at the evening's prices and sold at the floor, it halves it.

Why so much food sells below cost

A market where most products sell under their ingredients looks broken, but there are ordinary reasons for it, and knowing them helps you avoid losing gold.

The first reason is that many cooks never buy their ingredients. Anglers cook their own fish, herbalists cook their own herbs, and players who collect Plant Protein and Pork while questing treat those ingredients as free. When they list food, they price it against nothing, so the market floor sits below what a buyer of every ingredient would pay.

The second reason is skill-ups. A cook levelling the profession crafts dozens of cheap dishes for the skill points and then dumps them on the Auction House to clear bags. That pushes the price of low-end food down to near the vendor price, regardless of what went into it.

The third reason is timing. Base ingredients spike for a day when a large buyer clears the cheap listings, as Plant Protein and Pork clearly did on 2026-10-08, but finished food prices move slowly. Our evening snapshot caught the ingredients at a high and the dishes at their normal level, which makes almost every bill look terrible. The 14-day-low table is the fairer picture for a patient cook.

None of this means cooking cannot pay. It means you should not buy ingredients at a spike and expect the dish price to follow. Buy cheap, cook a few, and sell into the evenings when groups form.

Dishes to skip

Some dishes on the list lost money in both our tables, at the evening's prices and at 14-day lows. Felberry Figs, Forager's Medley, Bloom Skewers, Silvermoon Standard, Twilight Angler's Medley, Eversong Pudding, Sunwell Delight and Portable Snack all fall into that group. They are fine for skill points or for feeding yourself, but on our numbers they are not something to cook for sale. Felberry Figs is the starkest: even at 14-day lows its bill was about twelve times its sale price, because it takes ten Plant Protein for one dish.

Cooking as a fisher or an herbalist

If you gather your own ingredients, the sums change, but not in the way most people think. Your fish and herbs are not free: each one has a market price, and cooking only pays if the dish is worth more than the raw ingredients you could have sold. For a fisher with Blood Hunter, that bar is very high. For a fisher with Fillet and a few cheap fish, it is low, and Void-Kissed Fish Rolls or Twilight Angler's Medley become a way to turn cheap catches into something sellable. For an herbalist, Bloodthistle-Wrapped Cutlets uses five Silver Sanguithorn, one of the cheapest Midnight herbs, and it broke even at 14-day lows.

What we do not know

We do not know whether any Midnight dish has a crafting stat that returns extra food, and we have not measured how often cooks get bonus output. We also do not know where every base ingredient comes from; some may be sold by vendors, which would cap their price, and some come from gathering. We price everything at the Auction House, which is the one source we can read directly.

How to cook for profit, step by step

  1. Check Plant Protein and Practically Pork first. If either is above its 14-day high, do not cook anything that uses it today.
  2. Pick from the short list. Buttered Root Crab, Null and Void Plate, Glitter Skewers, Quick Sandwich and Bloodthistle-Wrapped Cutlets were the dishes that paid at lows. Void-Kissed Fish Rolls paid at the evening's prices.
  3. Price your own bill. Add up the live prices on this page for the reagents of the dish you chose. Compare with the dish's live price.
  4. Cook a small batch. Most of these dishes trade in thin markets. Ten good listings beat a hundred that crash the price.
  5. Sell into raid and dungeon nights. Food demand peaks when groups are forming.
  6. Never vendor food. Every dish here vendors for 33 silver50 copper, below the market for most of them.

Fish-based dishes: when the fish is worth more raw

Three dishes on the list are built on a valuable fish: Braised Blood Hunter (six Blood Hunter), Glitter Skewers (two Shimmersiren) and Null and Void Plate (an Ominous Octopus and two Warping Wise). For these, the fish is almost the whole bill. On 2026-10-08 the six Blood Hunters were 99 percent of the Braised Blood Hunter bill, and the dish sold for about a third of the fish inside it. When the fish is spiking, sell the fish. Our Blood Hunter guide and fishing overview cover those markets.

Feasts are a separate question

Feasts (Blooming Feast, Harandar Celebration, Silvermoon Parade, Quel'dorei Medley and the newer large feasts) do not appear in our Auction House tables at all, so you cannot cook them to sell. They are cooked for your own group. Every one needs a Petrified Root, which read 211 gold that evening, and that one reagent was the biggest line in most feast bills. Our feast cost guide prices every feast.

What to watch

  • Plant Protein and Practically Pork. They swing the whole low end of the market.
  • Root Crab. The main input of the best dish on our low-price list.
  • Petrified Root. It decides how many feasts get cooked, which pulls on fish and herbs.
  • Raid weeks. Food and feast demand both rise at the start of a new raid tier.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. Read the full method or the about page.
