WoW Forever Riding Cost: Mounts and Training From the Client
What a mount costs in WoW Forever, read from the beta client: 40 level 40 mounts priced alike, 50 swift mounts, the new Riding skill, and what is still unknown.
Lowest buyout from player scans of the WoW Forever beta Auction House, as of beta build 70291. Beta prices are a testing economy and will not carry over to launch. No price data was available for these items when this page was built (checked 2026-10-13 07:22 UTC).
The short answer
In the WoW Forever beta client, every ordinary level 40 mount item carries a buy price of 20 gold and every ordinary level 60 swift mount carries 200 gold. That is true across all the racial mounts, and it is also true for the new Skyborne Galestriders. What the client does not tell you is the price of riding training, because trainer costs live on the server, not in the game files. So the honest number for a first mount is 20 gold plus a training fee we cannot read yet, and the honest number for a swift mount is 200 gold plus a second fee.
That is a much smaller mount bill than many Classic veterans are bracing for. It also means the real gold question in Forever is not "can I afford the horse" but "how much will Apprentice and Journeyman Riding cost at the trainer", and nobody can answer that from the data yet.
What the client says about riding
Forever adds a full Riding skill line to the game. In our extract of the beta skill tables (build 70124) the line has skill id 762, and it is flagged as new: Classic Era does not have it. The line holds eleven entries.
| Skill entry | Spell id | Type | What the client text says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice Riding | 33388 | Rank, skill 1 | Ride basic ground mounts that need riding skill 75 |
| Journeyman Riding | 33391 | Rank, skill 150 | Ride swift ground mounts that need riding skill 150 |
| Horse Riding | 824 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Ram Riding | 826 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Wolf Riding | 825 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Tiger Riding | 828 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Raptor Riding | 10861 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Kodo Riding | 18995 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Mechanostrider Piloting | 10907 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Undead Horsemanship | 10906 | Passive | Mount family skill |
| Galestrider Riding | 1285849 | Passive, new | Mount family skill for the Skyborne mounts |
Two things stand out. First, the structure is the later two step model: an Apprentice rank that unlocks basic mounts at skill 75 and a Journeyman rank that unlocks swift mounts at skill 150. In Classic Era the mount family skills were the whole system. Forever keeps those family skills but puts a general Riding skill on top of them. Second, there is a brand new family skill, Galestrider Riding, which matches the Skyborne mount items further down this page.
What the table cannot give you is a price. Apprentice Riding and Journeyman Riding are taught by riding trainers, and what a trainer charges is server data. Our creature cache from the beta does include riding NPCs by title, such as Velma Warnam, listed as Undead Horse Riding Instructor, and Binjy Featherwhistle, listed as Mechanostrider Pilot, along with mount sellers like Zachariah Post (Undead Horse Merchant) and Milli Featherwhistle (Mechanostrider Merchant). The names and titles prove the NPCs exist on the beta. They do not carry prices.
Every mount price in the client
The item table is where the numbers live. Every mount item has a buy price field, and the ordinary vendor mounts are remarkably uniform. We grouped every named mount item in build 70291 by the level it requires, its quality and its buy price.
| Group in the client | Required level | Quality | Buy price field | Items |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic racial and Skyborne mounts | 40 | Rare | 20 gold | 40 |
| Swift racial and Skyborne mounts | 60 | Epic | 200 gold | 50 |
| Black war mounts (Black War Steed and friends) | 40 | Epic | 100 gold | 8 |
| Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion (new) | 40 | Rare | 200 gold | 1 |
| Deathcharger's Reins | 60 | Rare | 100 gold | 1 |
| Qiraji Resonating Crystals | 60 | Rare | 1,000 gold | 4 |
| Raid and special mounts with no price | 60 | Epic | none | 4 |
The two rows that matter for nearly every player are the first two. Forty different basic mounts, from
Brown Horse Bridle and
Reins of the Striped Nightsaber to the new Empyrean Galestrider, share one buy price of 20 gold. Fifty swift mounts, from
Swift Palomino and
Swift White Ram to the new Swift Empyrean Galestrider, share 200 gold. There is no racial discount hiding in the item data and no cheaper colour.
The other rows need care. A buy price field is not the same thing as "a vendor sells this". The four Qiraji crystals carry 1,000 gold in the field, but in Classic Era they came from the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj raid, not from a shop. Deathcharger's Reins also carries a field price of 100 gold and a sell price of 25 gold, but in Classic it was a rare drop from Baron Rivendare. The eight black war mounts carry 100 gold at level 40; in Classic those sat behind PvP rank requirements. Until someone sees these items on a vendor in the beta, treat their field prices as data, not as a shopping list.
New mounts in the Forever files
Twenty named mount items in the beta client have item ids above 200000, which is the range new Forever content uses. They are worth knowing because some of them will be the first things players try to buy.
| New mount item | Level | Buy price field | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Empyrean, Regal, Stormy and Umber Galestrider | 40 | 20 gold each | Skyborne basic mounts, Galestrider Riding |
| Swift Empyrean, Regal, Stormy and Umber Galestrider | 60 | 200 gold each | Skyborne swift mounts |
| Cerulean Prideclaw | 60 | 200 gold | Included in the Skyborne Heroic Pack, per Blizzard |
| White Kodo, Lavender Kodo | 40 | 20 gold each | New kodo colours |
| Black Skeletal Horse, Striped Dawnsaber | 40 | 20 gold each | New basic colours |
| Green, Dark and Purple Skeletal Horse, Ochre Skeletal Warhorse | 60 | 200 gold each | New swift colours |
| Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion | 40 | 200 gold | A level 40 mount priced like a swift one |
| Reins of the Pack Kodo, Reins of the Spectral Bear | 60 | none | No price field |
The Skyborne race is new in Forever, and its mounts follow the same price rule as everyone else's. One of these mounts reaches players another way: Blizzard lists the Cerulean Prideclaw ground mount in the Skyborne Heroic Pack, with the note that the riding skill is bought in game. That note is the clearest official confirmation that riding training is a separate in game purchase, even when the mount itself is already yours. The outlier is the Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion: a level 40 rare mount with a 200 gold field price, ten times what the other level 40 mounts carry. We do not know yet what gates it. Blizzard's Skyborne Epic Pack lists "more Veteran Adventurer cosmetics", and this mount shares that name, so it may be an edition reward rather than a vendor item. We have not confirmed that. Plan your first mount around the 20 gold tier and treat this one as a curiosity until it shows up somewhere in game.
Working out your mount budget
Here is the arithmetic, kept to what the client proves.
- Basic mount item. 20 gold. This is the same for every race.
- Apprentice Riding. Unknown. The client says the rank unlocks mounts that need skill 75, but not what the trainer charges.
- Swift mount item. 200 gold.
- Journeyman Riding. Unknown. The rank unlocks mounts that need skill 150.
The known part of the bill is 220 gold in mount items across two purchases. Everything else is training. When the trainer prices are confirmed on the beta we will add them here; until then, any guide that gives you one total number for "riding in Forever" is filling the training gap from memory of another version of the game.
The Bartering perk
The Legacy system has a perk that touches this bill directly. Bartering sits in the professions and gathering tree, has two ranks, and its client text reads: "Reduces the gold price of items from all vendors by 10%." The text does not say whether that is 10% per rank or 10% in total, so here is the bill both ways.
| Purchase | Full price | 10% off | 20% off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic mount item | 20 gold | 18 gold | 16 gold |
| Swift mount item | 200 gold | 180 gold | 160 gold |
| Both mount items | 220 gold | 198 gold | 176 gold |
"All vendors" should include riding trainers if training is sold as a vendor purchase, but trainer fees are a separate interaction in the game and we have not confirmed that the perk applies to them. On the swift mount alone, Bartering is worth 20 gold to 40 gold, which is real money at level 60. Our Legacy Points guide covers how many points that costs.
Where the money comes from
A 20 gold mount at 40 and a 200 gold mount at 60 shape how you should play the levels in between. You do not need to grind for the first mount; normal questing and selling what you gather will get you there. The swift mount is the real target, and it rewards steady habits more than any single farm.
- Gather while you level. Mining, Herbalism and Skinning all sell. Our Copper Ore guide shows how the beta market treats the first tier of ore.
- Keep vendor trash moving. Grey items are pure profit and cost nothing but bag space. Bigger bags mean fewer trips; see bank and bag costs.
- Do not buy crafted gear you can live without. Every silver spent on a green that you replace in three levels comes out of the swift mount fund.
- Sell the scarce materials. Forever adds a set of uncommon gathering materials with real Auction House value. The scarce materials guide prices them.
- Watch launch week demand. The first days after 2026-11-04 are when raw materials sell fastest. Our launch week plan covers what to hold.
Two other items in the client touch mounted speed. The
Formula: Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill formula teaches an enchant that gives gloves "a minor bonus to riding speed". The second is new: Gift of Galloping
, item 271871, an epic level 60 consumable with a 150 gold buy price field and a sell price of one copper. Testers report it on the Powderfuse Port goblin Mister Graphed as a temporary mount speed buff; its tooltip is still empty in build 70291, so the exact effect is unconfirmed. Both are extras for a character who already rides, not something to budget for before a mount. Our Mister Graphed page tracks what is known about the Gift.
Where the mount vendors are
The client ships world map art for the starting zones, and the racial mount sellers in Classic sat close to them. We have not walked the beta to confirm every vendor position, so use this as a starting point rather than a promise.

Humans buy horses near Eastvale Logging Camp in eastern Elwynn Forest in Classic. Elwynn is one of the zones whose map ships in the Forever client.

Dwarves bought rams and gnomes bought mechanostriders in Dun Morogh. Milli Featherwhistle, the Mechanostrider Merchant, appears in our beta creature cache.

Forsaken players bought skeletal horses in Brill. Zachariah Post (Undead Horse Merchant) and Velma Warnam (Undead Horse Riding Instructor) both appear in our beta creature cache.

Orc wolves were sold in Orgrimmar and trolls bought raptors near Sen'jin Village, both in or next to Durotar.

Night elf sabers were sold in Darnassus, on Teldrassil. Skyborne Galestriders are new, and we have not confirmed where they are sold yet.
- Level
- 40 for a basic mount item, 60 for a swift one
- Skill
- Apprentice Riding (skill 75), then Journeyman Riding (skill 150)
- Gold
- Mount item prices in the table above; training fees are not in the client
- Group
- Solo
What to watch before launch
Three things will settle the riding cost question once and for all, and we will update this page when each one lands.
- Trainer prices. A beta player training Apprentice Riding can read the cost straight from the trainer window. Until then, it is unknown.
- Bartering on trainers. Whether the 10% discount applies to riding training, and whether it stacks to 20% at rank two.
- The Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion. Where it comes from, and whether its 200 gold field price is ever charged.
The part that is already settled is the part that matters most: Forever's mount items are cheap and uniform, 20 gold and 200 gold, for every race including the Skyborne. Build your savings plan on those two numbers, add a margin for training, and you will not be caught short.

How this guide was written
Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
