The short answer

WoW Forever adds a scarce material to each tier of each gathering profession: three for Skinning, three for Mining, three for Herbalism, plus Scarce Herb Seeds. They are uncommon quality, new to Forever, and worth far more than the common items gathered beside them. Pristine Leather is the headline. It appears in 126 recipes in the beta client, more than any other scarce material, and was listed at 52 silver on 2026-10-08, against 40 copper for Light Leather.

The surprise is the herbs. Frilled Lichen and Rosecap each appear in only two recipes, but one of those recipes makes a dye that dozens of other recipes need. Counted through the dyes, a single pass through every recipe would use 876 Frilled Lichen. That is why the beta prices them the way it does.

Why these nine? Each one is new to Forever, uncommon quality, and the client prices them in a clean ladder: the Skinning and Mining sets step from low to mid to high at the same vendor values, and the herbs follow a lower ladder of their own. Their recipes start at matching skill levels too (low tier around 50 to 80, mid around 130 to 190, high around 230 to 275). The Legacy perk Bountiful Harvest promises "100% more Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning", and these are the materials that fit. Our Bountiful Harvest guide covers the perk.

Demand, counted properly

A raw recipe count undersells the herbs and ores, because most of their demand flows through an intermediate. Cerulean Dye takes two Frilled Lichen; Sulfuric Acid takes two Pyrite. So we counted every recipe in the client that uses each scarce material or the intermediate it becomes, and added up the reagents a crafter would need to make each recipe once.

PitchblendeAzerothium Bar (2 each)189 bars179

This is the number we think matters most on the page. By one pass demand, Frilled Lichen is the most wanted scarce material in Forever at 876, Rosecap is second at 606, and both sit ahead of Pristine Leather at 498. Both herbs are close to invisible if you only count their own recipes. Players gathering at the beta's low levels found Frilled Lichen worth more than two hundred times a Peacebloom, and this table is why: 108 Tailoring recipes alone need Cerulean Dye.

Pristine Leather: who needs it

Pristine Leather is the scarce material most players will meet first, and it has the widest spread of buyers. Its 126 recipes split 80 to Leatherworking, 30 to Blacksmithing and 16 to Tailoring, and they start at skill 80.

Recipe familyProfessionPristine Leather per familyNotes
Mender's and Skycaller's setsLeatherworking29 eachLeather and mail healer sets
Brawler's, Defender's, Stormrider's, Totemic, Trapper's, Wisdom's setsLeatherworking25 eachKilts and legguards take 8 per piece
Acolyte's, Crusader's, Guard's chain setsBlacksmithing2 to 6 per pieceBelts, boots, helms, leggings, shirts
Invulnerable MailLeatherworking20Plus 10 Pristine Scale, skill 295 to 310

The Blacksmithing line is the opportunity most skinners will miss. New chain sets for Acolytes, Crusaders and Guards ask for Pristine Leather in every piece, from two for a Chain Belt to six for Silvered Chain Leggings or a Shirt. When launch day brings a wave of new Blacksmiths, they will be shopping for leather from skinners, not just bars from miners.

Pristine Hide and Scale: the mid and high tiers

Pristine Hide takes over at skill 190. Its 46 recipes are almost all Leatherworking: the Mender's, Skycaller's, Prowler's, Skirmisher's, Skulker's, Stalker's and Warden's sets, with belts and waistguards taking ten each. Two Tailoring recipes use it too, including the Bottomless Bag. On 2026-10-08 it was listed at 2 silver50 copper, a fraction of Pristine Leather's price, because almost no beta character can craft at skill 190 yet.

Pristine Scale is the endgame skin: 16 recipes, ten Scale each for the Dragonscale helms, Dawn Armor, Ironfeather Leggings, Living Crown and the new Pristine Scorpid Leggings, plus eight for the Engineering Ultralight Goblin Glider. Our scans had no listing for it yet.

The ores and herbs

The mining and herb sets have fewer direct buyers but feed the intermediates above.

  • Pyrite goes into the new Shining tailoring set (24 Pyrite across its pieces), four enchants and the Sulfuric Acid that new Blacksmithing plate needs. It was listed in both houses at 1 silver69 copper.
  • Bauxite becomes Sandpaper for the Justicar's, Officer's and Prefect's plate sets, and goes into a necklace enchant.
  • Pitchblende is smelted with Coal into Azerothium Bars for endgame smithing.
  • Frilled Lichen, Rosecap and Stranglevine each make one dye and go into one enchant. The dyes are where their value lives.

Scarce Herb Seeds is the odd one. No recipe in our extract uses it. Its own text says to grow it in a Greenhouse or combine it at a Seed Hybridizer at a camp, which are the Herbalism Tier 2 and Tier 3 camp objects. It was listed at 99 silver99 copper.

Scarce against common: the gap at each tier

The reason scarce materials matter is the size of the gap between them and the common item gathered beside them. On 2026-10-08 the beta scans gave these pairs:

Common itemLatest beta scanScarce item at the same tierLatest beta scan
Light Leather40 copperPristine Leather52 silver
Medium Leather1 silver50 copperPristine Hide2 silver50 copper
Copper Ore42 copperPyrite1 silver69 copper
Peacebloom15 copperFrilled Lichen74 silver

At the low tier, Pristine Leather was listed at more than a hundred times Light Leather, and Frilled Lichen at more than two hundred times Peacebloom. Pyrite is the exception: it sat only a little above Copper Ore. Our reading is that supply did it: the 2026-10-08 scans counted several hundred Pyrite listed across the two houses. At the mid tier, Pristine Hide sat only modestly above Medium Leather, again because few characters can use it yet.

The lesson is not that every scarce item is worth a fortune. It is that scarce items are priced by their recipes, not by how rare they feel. Frilled Lichen is expensive because 108 Tailoring recipes need its dye. Pyrite is cheap, on our reading, because supply caught up with Sulfuric Acid demand on a realm capped at level 20.

What launch will change

The beta is a small, low level world. At launch on 2026-11-04 three things shift at once.

  1. Supply jumps. Every gatherer on a full realm finds scarce materials. Expect every price in the tables above to fall from its beta level.
  2. Demand moves up the tiers. The beta can barely reach the mid tier. Launch characters reach skill 130 to 190 within days, and Pristine Hide, Bauxite and Rosecap gain buyers.
  3. Blacksmiths arrive. The new chain sets want Pristine Leather from skill 80, and the new plate sets want Sulfuric Acid and Sandpaper. Those are the professions that turn scarce materials into gear.

If you can only hold one scarce material through launch week, hold Pristine Leather: it has the most recipes, the most professions buying it, and the lowest skill requirement. Our launch week plan puts it in a day by day schedule.

How to handle scarce materials

  1. Never vendor them. The highest vendor value in the set is 3 silver75 copper. Every scarce material with a scan was listed at or above its vendor value on 2026-10-08, and most were listed far above it. Pyrite was the only one that merely matched it.
  2. Sell Pristine Leather in fours and sixes. Those are the counts the chain sets ask for.
  3. Sell herbs to alchemists, or become one. If you have Alchemy, compare the dye's price to two herbs plus a vial before every batch. Our new materials guide has that maths.
  4. Hold the mid tier through launch. Pristine Hide, Bauxite and Rosecap have thin beta demand because few characters are high enough. That changes when launch characters reach skill 130 to 190.
  5. Take Bountiful Harvest if you gather. It targets exactly these nine items.

Where the low tier is gathered

The low tier scarce materials pair with the first tier of common gathering, so the starting zones are where to look. The beta client ships maps for these zones; which nodes and creatures drop scarce items is not in the client, and we have not logged a session yet.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
