Mage AoE Farming in WoW Forever: What Still Pays

Mage AoE farming on the WoW Forever beta: every changed AoE spell from the client diff, the cloth and drops a pull yields by level band, beta prices, and the caveats.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · WoW Forever beta, as of beta build 70291

The short answer

Mage AoE farming in WoW Forever will pay the way it always has, through volume: lots of humanoids, lots of cloth, a little meat and silver, and the occasional green for the disenchanter. What has changed is the toolkit. Our diff of the beta client against Classic Era shows that Blizzard and Flamestrike were rebuilt with a new damage layout, Cone of Cold's slow dropped from 50 to 40 percent, Arcane Explosion lost a little base damage on most ranks, and Ice Barrier now protects your casts from pushback as well as interrupts. None of that has been tested in play, and no route has been walked, so this page gives you the inputs, not a rate. On 2026-10-08 the beta scans had Silk Cloth at 3 silver67 copper and Wool Cloth at 55 copper, and the cloth you farm in the beta's 20 to 30 band is the one to price your session against.

What the client changed on AoE spells

These are the AoE and defensive spells a farming mage relies on, and what the beta client stores differently from the Era client. We describe the data, not how it feels to play.

SpellWhat changed in the beta client
Blizzard (ranks 1 to 6)Rebuilt: the damage now comes from a separate spell; the old per-second effect's coefficient field moves from 0.042 to 0.03 and its base value to zero; a new area effect type appears
Flamestrike (ranks 1 to 6)Burn over time moved to a new effect layout; rank 1's direct hit coefficient rises from 0.134 to 0.157
Arcane ExplosionRank 1 base 34 to 32 with its coefficient up from 0.111 to 0.143; ranks 2 to 6 lose a little base damage (rank 6: 253 to 242)
Cone of Cold (ranks 1 to 5)Slow drops from 50 to 40 percent; damage slightly lower (rank 5: 350 to 340); duration entry changed
Frost NovaRank 1 coefficient up from 0.018 to 0.029; ranks 2 to 4 lose a point or two of base damage
Ice BarrierAbsorb on rank 1 goes from 438 to 431; the Era tooltip already promised no interrupts; the beta tooltip adds that your spellcasts are not delayed by damage either
BlinkNow frees you from stuns and immobilizes (the Era text said stuns and bonds)

Read the table as a farmer. The kite spells are slightly weaker: a 40 percent slow from Cone of Cold gives mobs more time to close than a 50 percent one did. The pull-and-burn spells are rebuilt rather than simply buffed or nerfed, so the classic Blizzard numbers in your head may not hold. And the defensive side is slightly better: the Era shield already stopped interrupts, and the beta tooltip adds pushback, which is exactly what a mage casting Blizzard into a crowd wants.

What a pull actually drops

An AoE pull is only as good as what the mobs carry. Humanoids drop cloth and coin; beasts drop meat and, with Skinning, leather. In Classic, mages farmed tightly packed camps of same-level humanoids for exactly that reason. Here is what that is worth on the beta, by level band.

35 to 45Mageweave Cloth25 silverabout 2507.4 times Silk
50 and upRunecloth50 silver102 times Mageweave

This is the number that should shape a mage's beta plan. Each step up the cloth ladder multiplied the value of a single drop: Wool was worth about three Linen, Silk about four Wool, and Mageweave more than seven Silk. On the beta, where the cap is 20 now and 30 later, you live in the Wool and Silk rows. The jump from Wool to Silk is the one you can actually reach, and it more than quadruples what each cloth drop is worth. The Mageweave and Runecloth rows are thin because almost nobody can farm them yet; at launch those prices will fall as supply arrives.

The level bands are the Classic pattern for which cloth humanoids drop at which level; we have not logged Forever drops.

When the pull includes beasts, the meat matters more than you would think. On 2026-10-08 Lion Meat listed at 2 silver10 copper, nearly four Wool Cloth, and Crawler Meat at 1 silver. Spider's Silk from spiders was 14 silver79 copper, worth more than six Wool. Murloc Fin from murlocs was 45 copper, cheap but in steady demand from cooks.

If you or a guildmate disenchant, the greens from a farming session break into Strange Dust and Lesser Magic Essence at this level in Classic. Strange Dust listed at 65 copper with more than 10,000 on the market, so it sells, slowly. We have not verified the Forever disenchant results item by item.

A mage AoE session on the beta, step by step

  1. Wait until you have your core AoE kit. In Classic, mages started grouping humanoids for Arcane Explosion and Frost Nova in their twenties, and Blizzard came at 20.
  2. Pick humanoid camps over beasts. Cloth is the one drop every humanoid can carry, and Silk at 3 silver67 copper is the best value you can reach on the beta.
  3. Pull small first. With Cone of Cold's slow at 40 percent in the client, test how far you can kite before committing to big pulls.
  4. Keep Ice Barrier up while you channel. The Era tooltip already covered interrupts; the beta one adds pushback, which is the shield's best feature for AoE.
  5. Loot everything. Grey trash is vendor silver; meat and silk are Auction House silver.
  6. Sell cloth in large stacks. With thousands of Wool and Silk listed, small stacks sit.
  7. Save greens for a disenchanter or list them; never vendor a green that could sell.
Walked route status

Mage AoE, beta level 20 to 30 humanoid camps

Not walked yet

No hourly gold figure is published here until this route has been walked end to end with a timer and a full loot log. Until then this page gives you the inputs (live prices and what drops) and leaves the arithmetic to you.

Teleport and portal reagents

Mages also make gold from portals. The Forever client adds a new statistic, "Mage Portals taken", alongside "Mage portal taken most", so the game now tracks portal use. The reagents are cheap at a vendor and oddly priced on the beta Auction House:

Rune of Teleportation10 silver2 houses listing
Rune of Portals9 silver98 copper2 houses listing

Lowest buyout from player scans of the WoW Forever beta Auction House, as of beta build 70291. Beta prices are a testing economy and will not carry over to launch. Last verified

Rune of Teleportation sells to a vendor for 2 silver50 copper but listed at 10 silver on the beta, and Rune of Portals sells to a vendor for 5 silver but listed at 9 silver98 copper. In Classic both runes were sold by reagent vendors. If the same is true in Forever, never buy them on the Auction House; and if you see someone selling ports in a capital, the rune is a tiny share of what they charge.

Where to farm in the beta band

These are the zones in the beta's playable range where Classic mages found humanoid camps. We have not walked any of them in Forever.

The nerf history, and why we hedge

Every veteran mage has a story about an AoE farm that stopped working. That history is the reason this page refuses to promise anything, so here is what we mean by it, clearly labelled.

In Classic, the most profitable mage farms were dungeon pulls: whole rooms of elites gathered and burned down, then the instance reset and done again. Blizzard answered with an account-wide limit on how many instances you could enter per hour, which capped how many resets a farmer could chain. Over the years of Classic Era, Season of Discovery and Hardcore, other individual farms were also changed when they got out of hand. We are not listing those as Forever facts, because they are not in the Forever client and we have not tested any of them.

What we can say from the data is that Forever has already touched the exact spells AoE farming runs on. Blizzard and Flamestrike are not just retuned, they are rebuilt with a different effect layout, and Cone of Cold's slow is weaker. When a developer rebuilds the core AoE spells of a class, it is a fair bet that they have thought about how those spells get used to farm.

So treat every famous Classic mage farm as a hypothesis in Forever. Test it at a small scale on the beta, or in the first days after launch, before you plan a week of play around it. If it works, it works. If it does not, the cloth ladder above still applies to whatever you can pull safely.

What to watch

  • Spell changes in later builds. Blizzard and Flamestrike were rebuilt between Era and beta. Further changes in later builds would change everything on this page.
  • The Silk price. It is the best cloth you can reach on the beta, and every mage, warrior and rogue in the twenties is farming it.
  • Mageweave at launch. Thin on the beta, it will be the cloth mages farm in their late thirties. Expect the price to fall as supply grows.
  • Rune prices. If reagent vendors stock them, beta listings at several times vendor value are a trap for buyers.

Is mage AoE farming worth it in Forever?

The inputs say yes: humanoids still carry cloth, cloth still steps up sharply in value with level, and the client's Ice Barrier change helps exactly the kind of play AoE farming needs. The unknowns are real too: Blizzard and Flamestrike are rebuilt, Cone of Cold kites less well, and AoE farming has a history of being adjusted in Classic. Until someone walks a route and logs it, there is no rate here. Start small, test the spells, and price your session against Silk.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
