Best Gathering Professions to Level With in WoW Forever: Herbalism vs Mining vs Skinning
Herbalism, Mining and Skinning compared on WoW Forever client recipe demand and beta prices bracket by bracket, plus the new camp features each one unlocks.
The short answer
If you can only take one gathering profession while levelling in WoW Forever, take Skinning for steady sales or Mining for the best margins, and add Herbalism as the second pick once you pass level 30. Skinning's materials have the largest recipe demand in the client at every tier:
Light Leather,
Heavy Leather,
Thick Leather and
Rugged Leather together feed more than 550 recipes. Mining carries the biggest premiums over vendor price in the early brackets, and bars like
Bronze Bar and
Mithril Bar sit inside dozens of new Forever recipes. Herbalism starts slow, with herbs worth a few copper below level 10, but by level 40 it carries the highest premium over vendor of any gathered material in that bracket:
Arthas' Tears listed at 48 gold88 silver against a vendor price of 95 copper.
How we compared them
A gathering profession is worth what its materials sell for, and materials sell for what crafters need. So we measured both. For each bracket we took the main material each profession produces, counted every recipe in the client that uses it, and added up how many units a character would need to craft each of those recipes once. Then we put the best beta price next to it.
Recipe demand, bracket by bracket
| Bracket | Skinning: recipes and units | Mining: recipes and units | Herbalism: recipes and units |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | 149 recipes, 830 units | 65 recipes, 394 units | 30 recipes, 37 units |
| 10 to 20 | 135 recipes, 658 units | 81 recipes, 749 units | 44 recipes, 79 units |
| 20 to 30 | 182 recipes, 1,007 units | 148 recipes, 760 units | 39 recipes, 67 units |
| 30 to 40 | 157 recipes, 1,261 units | 142 recipes, 1,155 units | 61 recipes, 108 units |
| 40 to 60 | 357 recipes, 3,126 units | 132 recipes, 2,640 units | 150 recipes, 497 units |
How we built each cell: Skinning counts the tier's leather plus its cured hide (Light, Medium, Heavy, Thick, Rugged). Mining counts the tier's bars (Copper; Bronze; Iron, Gold and Silver; Mithril and Truesilver; Thorium). Herbalism counts every herb of the tier. The arithmetic is ours.
On recipe counts alone, Skinning wins every bracket, and Mining is a strong second. Herbalism looks far behind, but that number hides something important.
Beta prices, bracket by bracket

| 10 to 20 | Medium Hide, 5 silver55 copper | Tin Ore, 4 silver8 copper | Briarthorn, 3 silver95 copper |
| 20 to 30 | Heavy Hide, 16 silver30 copper | Iron Bar, 8 silver60 copper | Liferoot, 6 silver98 copper |
| 30 to 40 | Thick Leather, 38 silver | Mithril Bar, 12 silver98 copper | Goldthorn, 25 silver |

The price table tells a different story from the demand table. Skinning has the best seller in three of five brackets, but its best item at 40 to 50, Rugged Leather, was sitting at its own vendor price on the beta. Herbalism's best item at 40 to 50 sold for more than six times Skinning's and Mining's best items combined. Mining is never the weakest and never runs dry: the ores and bars always sold above their vendor prices from 1 to 40.
The verdict by profession
Skinning
Skinning is the steady earner. Its materials have the most recipe demand at every level, so leather always sells. It needs no nodes: every beast you kill for a quest is a skinning target, so it fits around normal levelling better than the other two. The weakness is price per item. Light and Medium Leather sell for a little over three times their vendor price at best, and Rugged Leather at 40 to 50 had no premium at all on the beta. Hides are the exception and are worth watching: Medium Hide and Heavy Hide both sold for more raw than their cured versions.
Mining
Mining has the best margins. In the 1 to 20 brackets, ores sold for fifteen times their vendor price or more, and the bronze smelt added about a fifth on top of the ore it used. From Iron upward, smelting the ore paid every time we checked except Truesilver. The bars sit inside the largest blocks of new Forever recipes, especially in Blacksmithing: 44 new Bronze Bar recipes, 42 new Thorium Bar recipes. The weakness is travel: Mining is node-based, so you leave the quest path to find veins.
Herbalism
Herbalism is the late bloomer. Below level 20 its herbs are cheap and its recipe counts are small. From level 30 on, it carries the biggest premiums of the three gathering professions: Goldthorn at more than sixteen times vendor, Purple Lotus at 49 silver, Arthas' Tears at 2 gold50 silver. And because herbs become consumables that are crafted over and over, their demand does not end when crafters finish levelling.
The new camp features
Forever adds a camping system, and each gathering profession has its own camp features in the client. These are new recipes, and they are another use for the materials you gather.
| Profession | Camp skill | Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Herbalism | Gardening | Incense Candle (Peacebloom, Silverleaf) | Greenhouse (Simple Wood, Arthas' Tears, Purple Lotus) | Seed Hybridizer (4 Mountain Silversage, Crystal Vial, 2 Runecloth) |
| Mining | Lodestone line | Lodestone (Rough Stone, Copper Bar) | Rock Garden (2 Heavy Stone, Iron Ore, Silver Bar) | Molten Foundry (5 Thorium Bar, 2 Dense Stone, Truesilver Bar) |
| Skinning | Tanning | Camp Chair (3 Light Leather, 2 Simple Wood) | Field Guide (3 Medium Leather, 2 Slimy Murloc Scale, Fine Thread) | Trapper's Workbench (2 Simple Wood, 4 Heavy Leather, Iron Bar) |
Blizzard's description of Camping says a Basic Campfire holds up to three crafted objects, one per player, on a one-hour cooldown. The client sets the Tier 1 features at skill 20 to 25, Tier 2 at 140 to 145 and Tier 3 at 300. We have not tested what each feature does in play, so we cannot rank them yet. What we can say is that each tier asks for materials from its own gathering profession, which gives gatherers one more reason to keep a few stacks back.
Two new smelts for Mining
The client also adds two Mining recipes at the top end that did not exist in Classic: Smelt Azerothium, which takes two Pitchblende and one Coal at skill 275, and Smelt Heavy Thorium, which takes Heavy Thorium Ore at 300 to 315. We have not found those ores on the beta yet, and none were listed on the scans. If they turn out to be endgame-only veins, they will be the most valuable thing a miner can find.
Training ranks and what they unlock
All three gathering professions keep the familiar four ranks in the client. The Mining entries spell out the caps: Journeyman "gives a potential mining skill of 150", Expert 225 and Artisan 300. Herbalism and Skinning follow the same Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Artisan steps. Each rank is a trainer visit and a fee, and none of the fees are in the files we have read.
What the ranks mean for gold is timing. A gatherer who falls behind their level cannot touch the nodes or beasts of their current zone, and the materials of the zone you are in are the ones worth the most to you. Three habits keep you on pace:
- Gather everything on your path, even the low nodes and the grey-level beasts, until you are within a few points of the next rank.
- Train each rank the moment you are eligible. A missed rank wastes every node you pass until you go back to a trainer.
- Keep your gathering tool in your bags at all times. The client lists a Mining Pick as a requirement for Mining; in Classic, a Skinning Knife does the same job for Skinning.
What to hold back from the Auction House
Selling everything is the right default for a gatherer, with a few exceptions that the camp features and the beta prices point to.
- A stack or two of each tier's main material for camp features: Light Leather and Peacebloom for Tier 1, Medium Leather and Iron Ore for Tier 2, Heavy Leather and Thorium for Tier 3.
- Raw hides when they outsell their cured versions, which they did for Medium and Heavy Hide on the beta.
- Rare herbs and ores at the top of each bracket, where a single listing can set the price.
- Anything sitting at its vendor floor, such as Rugged Leather. Holding it cannot lose you money.
Which one should you pick
- Want gold from day one with the least effort? Skinning. It costs no detours and always sells.
- Want the best margin per item while levelling? Mining. Smelt your ore and sell bars from Bronze onward.
- Planning to play past 40? Add Herbalism. It overtakes the others once herbs like Goldthorn and Arthas' Tears appear.
- Levelling a crafter? Pair the gatherer with its craft: Skinning with Leatherworking, Mining with Blacksmithing or Engineering, Herbalism with Alchemy.
- Making a dedicated gatherer alt? Mining and Skinning from 1 to 30, then consider swapping one for Herbalism. Our alt leveling guide scores every pair.

How this guide was written
Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
