Making Gold on the Midnight Auction House: The Basics

How the Midnight Auction House really works: commodity and realm markets, the cut, undercutting, and reading a 14-day range, shown on live prices of real Midnight goods.

Updated · By Christopher Lucas · Retail: Midnight

The short answer

The Midnight Auction House is two markets wearing one window. Materials, consumables and other stackable goods trade on one shared market for the whole US region, so Gold Argentleaf sells for 37 gold whether you list it from Silvermoon or from a quiet connected realm. Gear, pets, decor and other unique items stay on your own connected realm, where prices can be ten times apart from one realm to the next. Making gold comes down to three habits: list into the right market, price against the 14-day range instead of the panic of the moment, and never let the cut or a dead deposit eat a thin margin. Everything below uses live numbers from our own Auction House tables, so you can see each habit on a real item.

The two markets inside one window

Blizzard moved stackable goods to a region-wide market several expansions ago, and Midnight keeps that split. You can tell which market an item belongs to by how the Auction House shows it. A commodity has one row with a total quantity and a price ladder, and you buy a number of units, not a specific auction. A realm item shows individual listings, each with its own seller, item level and buyout.

MarketWhat trades thereWho you compete withWhat sets the price
Commodity (US region)Herbs, ore, cloth, leather, enchanting mats, flasks, potions, food, gems, enchant scrollsEvery seller on every US realmThe cheapest units on the ladder, filled lowest first
Realm (your connected realm)Weapons and armor, BoE transmog, battle pets, housing decor, recipes, bags, mounts that can be soldSellers on your connected realm onlyIndividual listings; often one or two sellers

That table decides most of your strategy. On the commodity side you are one seller among thousands, so you cannot set the price, only choose when to join it. On the realm side you might be the only seller of an item, so the price is whatever you are patient enough to ask and a buyer is willing to pay. Our commodity market explainer goes deep on the first market, and the BoE flipping guide on the second.

What the Auction House takes from you

Two costs come with every listing. The first is the deposit, which the game charges when you post. It scales with the item's vendor price and with the listing length you pick, and you get it back when the item sells. If the auction expires unsold, the deposit is gone. The second is the cut: on a sale the house keeps 5 percent of the price, which is the same rule Blizzard has used for years. Here is the cut on a real batch at the price our tables held on 2026-10-08:

BatchUnitsUnit price (2026-10-08)Gross5 percent cutYou receive
Gold Argentleaf20033 gold6,600 gold330 gold6,270 gold
Nocturnal Lotus10249 gold2,490 gold124 gold50 silver2,365 gold50 silver
Dazzling Thorium5008 gold3 silver4,015 gold200 gold75 silver3,814 gold25 silver

The cut is the cost people forget when they plan a flip. If you buy a material and relist it, the price has to rise by more than 5 percent before you earn a single copper. On the Gold Argentleaf row that means buying at 33 gold only pays if you can sell above 34 gold74 silver, because 34.74 less 5 percent is 33.00. Write that break-even down before every resale and you will skip most of the flips that look good and lose money.

Undercutting without throwing money away

Commodities fill from the bottom. When a buyer asks for 100 units, the game sells them the 100 cheapest units on the ladder, whoever posted them. Your listing only sells after every cheaper unit has gone. That is why sellers undercut: one copper below the lowest price puts you at the front of the queue.

Undercutting is fine. Following an undercut all the way down is not. Our hourly data shows how fast the bottom can move. Between 2026-10-01 and 2026-10-07 the lowest price of Gold Argentleaf ranged from 20 gold34 silver to 40 gold53 silver, and in 65 of 166 hourly readings the lowest price moved by more than 5 percent from the hour before. Most of those moves were small sellers posting a few units cheap, and the price climbed back within hours.

  1. Look at the depth, not only the lowest price. If a few units sit far below the rest, they will sell quickly and the price returns to the main shelf.
  2. Undercut the main shelf, not the bait. Price one copper under the level where real quantity sits.
  3. Set a floor before you open the window. Use the 14-day low on the strip above: never list below it unless you need the gold today.
  4. Post in batches. Splitting 200 herbs into a few listings lets you sell some now and hold the rest if the price drops.
  5. Walk away when the bottom is crowded. If the ladder is thick at a price you dislike, keep the stock in your Warband bank and try again tomorrow.

Reading a 14-day range

Every price strip on this site shows three numbers: the current lowest price and the lowest and highest daily prices of the last fourteen days. The useful habit is to turn those three numbers into one position. Take the current price, subtract the 14-day low, and divide by the width of the range. Zero means the item is at its two-week floor and one means it is at its two-week ceiling.

ItemNow (2026-10-08)14-day low14-day highPosition in range
Gold Argentleaf33 gold70 silver17 gold87 silver36 gold83 silver83 percent
Silver Argentleaf4 gold24 silver1 gold75 silver5 gold23 silver72 percent
Nocturnal Lotus250 gold8 silver175 gold99 silver257 gold91 percent

The arithmetic for the first row: 33.70 less 17.87 is 15.83, the range is 36.83 less 17.87, which is 18.96, and 15.83 divided by 18.96 is about 0.83. On the day we checked, all three items sat in the top third of their range, which is a selling signal, not a buying one. Repeat the sum with the live strip above and you will know where today sits without opening a spreadsheet.

Positions near the top are where gatherers should sell. Positions near the bottom are where crafters should stock up, and where gatherers should hold unless they need the gold. A position you see on one day is a snapshot: if a patch or a new raid tier changes demand, the whole range shifts, which is what our patch-day price study measures.

Three items, three different markets

The best way to learn the house is to watch three goods that behave differently. All three are commodities, and all three appear in the strip at the top of this page.

Dazzling ThoriumAuction House 8 gold85 silverVendor 15 silver
Flask of the Shattered SunAuction House 420 goldVendor 2 gold98 silver
Dawn CrystalSilver qualityAuction House 97 gold97 silverVendor 1 gold5 silver

Gold Argentleaf is a premium input. Only crafters chasing the top result buy it, so the buyer base is thin and the price jumps around whenever someone posts a few hundred units. It is the textbook case for selling in batches near the top of the range. The full story is in our Argentleaf guide.

Dazzling Thorium is a bulk ore with deep supply. Our hourly readings for the first week of October averaged more than 100,000 units on the market. A single seller rarely moves a market that deep for long, but when one dumps a large block the price can step down hard: at 13:00 UTC on 2026-10-07 the lowest price fell from 12 gold80 silver to 8 gold39 silver in one hour while the quantity on sale dropped by about 20,000 units and the number of listings jumped from 137 to 221. That is not a buyer: a purchase eats the cheapest units first and pushes the floor up. It fits a large block being pulled from the ladder while many small sellers posted underneath, and the thick shelf at 16 gold99 silver never moved. Our commodity market explainer walks through that hour.

Flask of the Shattered Sun is a finished consumable. It sells in two listings at very different prices, 420 gold and 137 gold59 silver, because each one is a separate item in the game with its own buyers. Never compare one flask listing against the other; compare each against its own 14-day range.

Dawn Crystal is an enchanting reagent with a small, crowded ladder. In the same October week it showed more than 600 separate listings for only about 10,000 units, so the bottom is shared by many small sellers and moves often.

What to do on your first day

If you have never used the house for profit, start small and use one item you already gather.

  1. Pick one material you collect anyway, such as Silver Argentleaf at 3 gold82 silver.
  2. Check its position in the 14-day range on the strip above.
  3. If the position is above one half, list a third of your stock one copper under the main shelf for the shortest duration.
  4. If it sells within a day, list the next third. If not, hold the rest and check again after the weekly reset.
  5. Write down what you sold, the price and the day. After two weeks you will have your own sell-through record, which is worth more than any rule on this page.

Mistakes that cost gold

  • Vendoring materials. Every Midnight herb vendors for copper. Gold Argentleaf vendors for 9 silver75 copper and sells for 37 gold.
  • Dumping a full bag at the bottom. You pay for your impatience twice: once in the low price, and again because you drag the floor down for your next batch.
  • Ignoring the cut on flips. A resale needs a rise of more than 5 percent just to break even.
  • Listing realm items for the longest duration on day one. A long listing locks your deposit in while you learn what the item is really worth.
  • Treating a listing price as a sale price. A price on the house is an ask. Nothing on this page claims anything sells at a listed price; only a completed sale proves demand.

Where to go next

Once the basics feel natural, two guides take you further. The commodity market explainer shows how one seller moves a region-wide price, hour by hour. The best day to sell study tests the old advice about posting on reset day against nine weeks of our own data. When you are ready for realm items, read Old Raid Transmog Runs and the BoE flipping guide. Every other market guide sits on the Auction House hub.
