The short answer

WoW Forever keeps the five Classic leathers (Light, Medium, Heavy, Thick and Rugged) and adds new ones. The biggest for most players is Pristine Leather, which the beta client uses in 126 recipes, 125 of them new; at the top end there is also a new Fel Leather, covered below. On the beta the latest player scans put Light Leather at 40 copper, Medium at 1 silver50 copper, Heavy at 8 silver, Thick at 21 silver99 copper, Rugged at 5 silver and Pristine at 52 silver. Pristine was the most expensive leather on the beta, and it is the one to watch. For the classic five, the rule is simple: every leather is used in at least 90 recipes, so none of it should ever go to a vendor. Sell Light and Medium in volume, hold Heavy and Thick for launch week, and treat Rugged as the long-term earner.

The ladder at a glance

This table combines the client's vendor prices, our recipe counts and the beta scans. Recipe counts include every profession that names the leather as a reagent.

Rugged Leather is the giant: 213 recipe entries and 2,749 units to craft each once, more than Light, Medium and Heavy put together. Forty of those entries do not resolve a product item in our extract (mostly late Leatherworking patterns); drop them and Rugged still leads with 173 recipes and 2,119 units. That matches Classic, where Rugged was the backbone of every high-level leatherworking recipe, but Forever adds 73 new Rugged recipes on top.

Who buys each leather

Leatherworking is the main buyer of every leather, but not the only one. Here is the split by profession from our extract.

Heavy Leather stands out: Engineering and Blacksmithing together use it in 52 recipes, almost as many as Leatherworking's 70. That gives Heavy a wider buyer pool than any leather below Rugged. Pristine stands out the other way: thirty Blacksmithing recipes and sixteen Tailoring recipes, all new, which means plate-wearers' smiths and cloth tailors will be bidding on a leather for the first time.

Our analysis: what the beta premiums tell you

Divide each scan by the vendor price and you get a rough measure of how hard beta players chase each leather.

LeatherScan divided by vendor on 2026-10-08
Light2.2
Medium3.2
Heavy5.6
Thick12.7
Rugged1.0
Pristine48.4

The pattern from Light to Thick is exactly what a level cap produces. Light and Medium come from zones every beta character has played, so supply is easy and the premium is small. Heavy and Thick sit at the edge of what a level 20 to 30 character can skin, so supply is thin and the premium climbs. Rugged reading 1.0 almost certainly means test listings priced at vendor, because nobody on the beta can skin level 50 beasts. Ignore it.

Pristine is different. Its premium is enormous, it shows up on the beta market at all, and its recipes are concentrated in the 100 to 150 skill band, which is reachable on the beta. Our read: Pristine Leather is obtainable by beta characters, it is scarce, and early crafters want it. That makes it the most interesting new skinning material in Forever.

Pristine Leather, the new rung

Pristine Leather has an uncommon quality border and a client vendor price of 1 silver25 copper. Our extract does not show any recipe that creates it, so it most likely comes straight from skinning or loot; we have not confirmed which on the beta. Where it goes is clearer. Its recipes cluster in two skill bands.

ProfessionSkill 50 to 99Skill 100 to 149Skill 150 to 199Skill 200 to 249Skill 250 and up
Leatherworking6 recipes, 12 leather24 recipes, 90 leather13 recipes, 55 leather18 recipes, 45 leather19 recipes, 101 leather
Blacksmithing5 recipes, 10 leather15 recipes, 70 leather5 recipes, 30 leathernone5 recipes, 20 leather
Tailoring2 recipes, 3 leather7 recipes, 33 leathernonenone7 recipes, 29 leather

The 100 to 149 band holds 46 recipes and 193 of the 498 units. That is where the new five-version Blacksmithing chain families (Acolyte's, Crusader's, Guard's, Protector's and Veteran's) ask for four to six Pristine Leather per boot, helm, shirt and legging. Tailoring adds a whole Pristine cloth set (Boots, Gloves, Sash, Circlet, Gown and Leggings, plus Filigreed versions) at 80 to 175. In other words, three professions hit the same Pristine demand in the same early band, right when most of the realm is levelling.

The other new leathers: Fel Leather and friends

Pristine Leather is not the only addition. The Forever profession tables also name a set of new high-level skins, all used only in new recipes.

Fel Leather is the standout: 990 units across all 52 entries, mostly in late-game armour at skill 320 to 340 that asks for twenty at a time next to Rugged Leather. Thirty-two of those entries do not resolve a product item in our extract; the twenty that do still take 366 Fel Leather. None of these had beta listings, and the client does not say where they drop. Our Mount Hyjal guide argues, from names and skill ranges, that Forever's new high-level zone is the likely source.

Skinning camp objects and tanning

Skinning gets its own small recipe list in Forever. The client lists three camp objects:

  • Camp Chair at skill 20 to 25: three Light Leather and two Simple Wood. It scanned at 2 silver on the beta.
  • Field Guide at 140 to 145: three Medium Leather, two Slimy Murloc Scale and a Fine Thread.
  • Trapper's Workbench at 300: two Simple Wood, four Heavy Leather and an Iron Bar.

Leatherworking adds a Tanning Rack at 140 to 145 (five Medium Leather, three Fine Thread, two Simple Wood), and Skinning gains an ability called Tanning that our extract lists without a recipe. Blizzard's Camping description says a Basic Campfire holds up to three crafted objects, one per player, on a one-hour cooldown. These objects are small leather sinks, but they are new ones, and they all use the lower leathers.

How to handle each leather

  1. Light Leather: sell in volume. It has 100 recipes and cheap supply. Post full stacks and let levelling leatherworkers buy them in bulk.
  2. Medium Leather: keep some for the Tanning Rack and Field Guide. Then sell the rest; the new chain families and Engineering both pull it.
  3. Heavy Leather: hold for launch week. It has the widest buyer pool below Rugged. Engineers, smiths and leatherworkers all hit it at once.
  4. Thick Leather: sell when the premium is high. On the beta it was twelve times vendor. At launch it will fall as characters pass level 40; sell into the scarcity, not after it.
  5. Rugged Leather: the long game. 213 recipes means it never stops selling. Keep a steady stream on the market rather than dumping.
  6. Pristine Leather: never undercut. It is new, scarce and wanted by three professions in the busiest skill band.

A skinner's first week at launch

Launch day on 2026-11-04 puts thousands of new characters in the starting zones at once. Here is a plan built around the recipe data rather than habit.

  1. Days one and two: skin everything, sell nothing cheap. Light Leather floods the market on day one. The 59 new Light Leather recipes mean leatherworkers burn through it fast, but the flood comes first. List a few stacks, hold the rest.
  2. Days two to four: move Light, start Medium. As leatherworkers pass skill 50, Light demand peaks and Medium demand begins. Sell Light into that peak.
  3. Days four to seven: Heavy Leather and the first Pristine. Characters reaching level 20 to 30 open the Heavy band, and the chain families and Pristine cloth set open around skill 100. This is the most crowded demand window for leather in the whole game, because Leatherworking, Blacksmithing, Engineering and Tailoring all want Heavy or Pristine at the same time.
  4. After the first week: steady Thick and Rugged. The rush ends; the long market begins. Rugged Leather is what you list every day for months.

Risks to keep in mind

Three things can upset these numbers. Beta recipe tables can change before launch, and Pristine Leather in particular is new enough that its recipe list may be trimmed or expanded. Second, if Pristine turns out to be common at launch, its beta premium will collapse; the scan we quote is from a small beta market. Third, leather supply scales with the number of players killing beasts for quests, not just with skinners. In launch week, every quester with Skinning is a supplier, so prices for the lower leathers can fall faster than the demand numbers suggest. Sell in batches, and watch the scans rather than the recipe counts once the realm is live.

What to watch on the Auction House

  • Pristine Leather. It led every leather on the beta. If its price holds at launch, the new chain and cloth sets are being crafted.
  • Heavy Leather in launch week. Three big professions want it in the same band.
  • Thick Leather after the first week. Its beta premium is a level-cap effect. When it falls, move your stock to Rugged.

Is it worth your time?

Skinning is the most forgiving gathering profession for a new player: every beast you kill is a node. On the beta, the leathers you can reach sell well above vendor, and Pristine Leather is the standout. At launch, Forever has added hundreds of new leather recipes across three professions, so leather demand will be wider than it ever was in Classic. No route has been walked yet, so this page carries no hourly figure, only prices and the recipes behind them.

How this guide was written

Prices on this page are read live from TheWoWDB Auction House tables when the page loads. Item names, icons, zones and art come from our own datamine of the game client. We do not publish gold-per-hour numbers for any route nobody has walked and timed, so where a rate would go this page says so. WoW Forever is in beta: every fact here is labelled with the client build it was read from and can change before launch. Read the full method or the about page.
