Housing Decor on the Auction House: What Sells and What It Costs
Crafted housing decor priced across 81 US realms in our tables against its reagent bills, why lumber is the real bottleneck, and which professions make what.
The short answer
Housing decor is one of the strangest markets in Midnight. On 2026-10-08 our tables found 308 different decor items listed on US connected realms, and 304 of them are crafted. The typical item asked about 11,000 gold on the typical realm, while its purchasable reagents cost about 405 gold. That gap looks like free money until you see the catch: every one of those 304 recipes also needs lumber, and lumber is bound to you. You cannot buy it on the Auction House. So the real cost of decor is your time gathering lumber, the reagent bill is almost a rounding error, and the listings are crowded: a typical decor item is listed on 80 of 81 realms. This page shows the numbers and how to pick decor that has a chance of selling.
Decor is a realm item, crafted by every profession
Decor is not a commodity. Each piece is listed on your connected realm, like gear, so prices differ from realm to realm. We matched every listed decor item to its crafting recipe in our datamine and counted who makes what.
| Profession | Decor items listed | Median realm ask | Median purchasable reagent bill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inscription | 73 | 11,019 gold | 285 gold |
| Enchanting | 34 | 9,992 gold | 366 gold |
| Engineering | 32 | 17,274 gold | 873 gold |
| Leatherworking | 31 | 11,764 gold | 479 gold |
| Tailoring | 31 | 10,856 gold | 228 gold |
| Alchemy | 31 | 6,000 gold | 153 gold |
| Jewelcrafting | 31 | 10,350 gold | 461 gold |
| Blacksmithing | 30 | 16,915 gold | 797 gold |
| Cooking | 11 | 10,000 gold | 104 gold |
Inscription makes far more of the listed decor than anyone else, more than twice the next profession. Engineering and Blacksmithing pieces ask the most on average. Alchemy decor asks the least. Every crafting profession has a decor line, so whatever you already have, you can join this market.

Lumber: the reagent you cannot buy
Here is the single most important fact about the decor market. All 304 listed crafted decor items need lumber, and our datamine marks every lumber type as bound. None of the twelve lumber types appears anywhere in our Auction House tables. Each lumber belongs to one expansion, which the client spells out in its icon name.
| Lumber | Expansion (from its icon) | Listed decor recipes using it | Median lumber per craft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midnight | 59 | 8 | |
| Burning Crusade | 26 | 20 | |
| Dragonflight | 25 | 25 | |
| The War Within | 24 | 22.5 | |
| Legion | 23 | 25 | |
| Shadowlands | 23 | 18 | |
| Battle for Azeroth | 22 | 19 | |
| Warlords of Draenor | 21 | 22 | |
| Mists of Pandaria | 21 | 25 | |
| Wrath of the Lich King | 21 | 20 | |
| Cataclysm | 20 | 22.5 | |
| Classic | 19 | 25 |
Two things follow. Midnight decor is cheap in lumber, at a median of 8 Thalassian Lumber per craft, while older-themed decor usually wants 20 to 25 of an older lumber. And because you must gather the lumber yourself, the people who can make decor are the people willing to spend time collecting it. That, not the reagent bill, is the cost of entry. We have not measured how long lumber takes to gather, so this page gives no rate; the route status below says not walked yet.
Midnight decor: small lumber, small bills
These are named Midnight-themed pieces that use Thalassian Lumber, with the realm prices and bills from our tables.
| Decor | Profession | Realms listing it | Cheapest realm | Median realm | Purchasable bill | Lumber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enchanting | 77 | 5,000 gold | 15,537 gold | 688 gold90 silver | 16 | |
| Inscription | 79 | 3,500 gold | 12,000 gold | 872 gold90 silver | 24 | |
| Inscription | 80 | 3,000 gold | 11,019 gold | 361 gold50 silver | 12 | |
| Blacksmithing | 76 | 2,500 gold | 10,321 gold | 982 gold40 silver | 12 | |
| Enchanting | 81 | 2,000 gold | 9,993 gold | 555 gold50 silver | 8 | |
| Jewelcrafting | 81 | 5,556 gold | 9,500 gold | 419 gold90 silver | 24 | |
| Enchanting | 80 | 1,500 gold | 9,395 gold | 586 gold90 silver | 8 | |
| Alchemy | 80 | 2,950 gold | 9,000 gold | 608 gold40 silver | 20 | |
| Tailoring | 81 | 1,501 gold | 6,000 gold | 1,506 gold50 silver | 22 | |
| Leatherworking | 81 | 3,300 gold | 5,488 gold | 775 gold80 silver | 8 |
Take the Sturdy Ren'dorei Cask as a worked example. It needs 4 Codified Azeroot, 4 Soul Cipher and 12 Thalassian Lumber. At the prices on 2026-10-08 the two purchasable reagents cost 361 gold50 silver in total. The cheapest realm asked 3,000 gold and the median realm 11,019 gold. Even at the cheapest realm, the ask was more than eight times the purchasable bill. Across all 284 decor items whose reagents we could fully price, the cheapest realm listing was a median of 5.9 times the bill, and only about 1 percent of items had a cheapest listing below their bill.

Old-world decor: the expensive end
Decor themed on older expansions asks the most, and it uses old materials that are cheap now, plus a lot of old lumber.
| Decor | Profession | Realms listing it | Cheapest realm | Median realm | Purchasable bill | Lumber |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jade Temple Dragon Fountain | Jewelcrafting | 66 | 32,900 gold | 74,999 gold | 25,891 gold | 50 Bamboo |
| Reconstructed Mogu Lightning Drill | Engineering | 80 | 11,001 gold | 44,695 gold | 5,234 gold50 silver | 50 Bamboo |
| Blacksmithing | 76 | 11,000 gold | 30,489 gold | 4,958 gold10 silver | 40 Bamboo | |
| Blacksmithing | 76 | 8,910 gold | 29,755 gold | 5,223 gold80 silver | 20 Ironwood | |
| Blacksmithing | 74 | 10,000 gold | 29,000 gold | 2,854 gold80 silver | 35 Ashwood | |
| Inscription | 77 | 10,250 gold | 27,000 gold | 4,515 gold60 silver | 45 Bamboo | |
| Inscription | 80 | 3,700 gold | 25,437 gold | 854 gold60 silver | 20 Fel-Touched |
The Jade Temple Dragon Fountain is the exception that proves the rule: its bill of about 25,891 gold is large because it needs old Pandaria materials, and its cheapest realm still asked 32,900 gold. For the rest, the old materials are cheap, as the live strip below shows.

Why the gap does not mean easy gold
A listing that asks twenty times its bill sounds like a sure thing. Three facts stop it from being one.
- Listings are asks, not sales. Our tables show what sellers want, not what buyers paid. A decor piece listed on 80 realms may sit unsold on most of them.
- The market is crowded. The median listed decor item was on 80 of 81 realms, and across the 304 items our tables counted about 154,000 units on sale. That is a lot of stock competing for a limited number of homes.
- Lumber time is the real cost. The reagent bill excludes lumber because it has no gold price. If gathering 24 Thalassian Lumber takes you a long time, the Magnificent Towering Bookcase is not cheap to make even though its bill is under 900 gold.
Where the bill goes: one recipe taken apart
The purchasable bill is small, but it is not spread evenly. Take the Rootflame Campfire, an Enchanting piece with the highest median ask in our Midnight table. Its recipe in our datamine calls for 15 Radiant Shard, 5 Dawn Crystal, 10 Azeroot, 10 Mote of Primal Energy and 16 Thalassian Lumber. At the cheapest listings on 2026-10-08:
| Reagent | Quantity | Unit price (2026-10-08) | Line cost | Share of the bill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 101 gold88 silver | 509 gold40 silver | about 73 percent | |
| 10 | 15 gold13 silver | 151 gold30 silver | about 22 percent | |
| 15 | 2 gold | 30 gold | about 4 percent | |
| 10 | 70 silver | 7 gold | about 1 percent | |
| 16 | cannot be bought | gathered | not priced |
The line costs add to about 698 gold, a little above the 688 gold90 silver in the table above because prices moved during the evening. Dawn Crystal alone is nearly three quarters of the purchasable cost. That matters for an enchanter planning a batch: the decor's cost moves with Dawn Crystal, which our patch-day study found had fallen about three quarters from its pre-12.1 level by October. A cheap Dawn Crystal week is a good week to stock up for Enchanting decor; live prices for every reagent are in the strip above.
What new decor in 12.1.5 means for sellers
Our news feed carried two items on 2026-10-08 about patch 12.1.5: new craftable decor, and a decor collection that takes players back through past expansions. We have not datamined the 12.1.5 recipes yet, so we cannot say which lumber or reagents they use. What we can say from the current market is how a new recipe is likely to behave. On launch day a new piece has few or no copies on any realm, so the first sellers set the price. Within days, as more crafters learn the recipe and gather the lumber, copies spread across realms, and the cheapest realm drifts down toward the crowd we see on today's pieces, where the typical item sits on 80 of 81 realms.
If you want a share of that first week, prepare now: stock the lumber types you already gather, keep a reserve of the commodity reagents your profession uses most, and plan to list your first copies for the shortest duration so you can reprice quickly. We will add 12.1.5 decor to this page once our datamine and tables have it.
How to sell decor without drowning in stock
- Pick recipes with low lumber per craft. Midnight decor needs a median of 8 Thalassian Lumber, against 20 to 25 for most old-world pieces.
- Check your own realm first. Search the piece. If your realm already has several copies near the cheapest-realm price, pick another piece.
- Make one, list one. Craft a single copy, list it for the shortest duration a little under your realm's cheapest copy, and see whether it sells before you gather lumber for more.
- Favour pieces on fewer realms. A piece listed on 66 realms, like the Jade Temple Dragon Fountain, has fewer competitors than one on 81.
- Buy reagents late in the week. Commodity reagents such as Codified Azeroot run a few percent cheaper at the weekend in our weekday study.
- Keep a sell log. Note which pieces sold and how fast. After two weeks you will know which of your recipes are worth the lumber.

Who buys decor
Housing players buy decor to furnish their homes, and the pieces that sell are the ones that look good in a room. Our tables cannot see buyers, so this is reasoning, not measurement: furniture people use in every room, such as bookcases, beds, casks and lighting, has a broad buyer base, while one-off showpieces sell to fewer homes at higher prices. Themed sets sell to players building one look, so a matching bed, table and lamp from the same culture can move together.
