Classic Era Engineering Leveling Guide (1-300)

Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

Classic Engineering leveling from 1 to 300 takes fifteen recipes and, once you count the extra copies a few of them need as reagents for later brackets, roughly 470 crafts, most of them ore and cloth you can buy in a couple of Auction House trips. This guide gives you the exact bracket-by-bracket route, expected craft counts computed from the current Classic Era game data, and a shopping list with an honest RNG buffer built in.

It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms, which all run the same 1.15 client. Season of Discovery adds recipes this guide does not cover.

What you need

Train each rank before its cap stops you: Apprentice caps at 75, Journeyman at 150 (character level 10), Expert at 225 (character level 20), and Artisan at 300 (character level 35). Journeyman, Expert, and Artisan training each mean a trip to a specific trainer, and two of those visits land in the middle of a bracket below, so plan them ahead rather than waiting for a wall.

Everything in this route is ore, bar, and cloth commodities: Rough Stone, Copper Bar, Coarse Stone, Silver Bar, Bronze Bar, Weak Flux, Moss Agate, Medium Leather, Wool Cloth, Steel Bar, Mithril Bar, Solid Stone, Thorium Bar, and Runecloth. All of it is buyable on the Auction House; if you're also leveling Mining yourself, smelting your own bars instead of buying them pays for a chunk of this route.

Three route notes before you start:

  • This route skips one-off tool schematics like Arclight Spanner. They hand you a single guaranteed skill point for a dedicated trainer visit and a niche use case; the recipes below already cover that skill range more efficiently.
  • Partway through this climb you'll be offered a choice between a Gnomish and a Goblin specialization quest. Neither is required to reach 300, and every recipe in this route is available to both specializations, so the choice doesn't change any number below.
  • The last two brackets use Thorium Widget and Thorium Tube, both limited-supply vendor schematics rather than trainer recipes. Buy them when you see them; check the trainer first for everything else.

How the craft counts work

A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's actual color windows in the game data. Expected means average: half your runs will need more. The Buy column adds about 20% on top, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers.

Engineering leans on chained reagents more than most professions: several recipes below consume the item crafted in an earlier bracket, and because that earlier item is usually gray by the time you need it as a reagent, the extra copies come free of RNG, you just craft more of a recipe you've already outgrown. The notes under the table call out every place this happens with exact numbers.

Training checkpoints inside this table: you cross the Journeyman cap (150) partway through the Bronze Framework bracket, and the Expert cap (225) partway through Mithril Casing. Train the next rank as soon as you hit the cap; the recipe you're mid-bracket on will keep working once you're trained back up, no need to switch.

Three brackets need more of an earlier bracket's output than that bracket produces on its own, because the earlier recipe is already gray and the extra copies are pure material, not skill:

  • Rough Blasting Powder only needs 33 expected crafts (40 buffered) for its own bracket, but Rough Copper Bomb needs 76 buffered. Keep crafting Rough Stone into powder past skill 40; it's free material at that point.
  • Handful of Copper Bolts needs 21 expected (26 buffered) for its own bracket, but Rough Copper Bomb needs 38 buffered. Same story: craft extra past skill 60.
  • Coarse Blasting Powder needs 17 expected (21 buffered) for its own bracket, but Coarse Dynamite needs 60 buffered. Craft extra past skill 95.
Solid Blasting Powder never gets its own bracket in this route. Mithril Gyro-Shot needs 54 buffered copies of it (from Solid Stone x2 each, so 108 buffered Solid Stone), and by the skill range where you're making Mithril Gyro-Shot, Solid Blasting Powder itself is long past gray, so none of those crafts earn you anything beyond the reagent. Craft them alongside the Mithril Gyro-Shot bracket, not before it.

Bronze Tube is the one clean case: its own bracket produces 32 buffered copies, well over the 12 that Standard Scope needs, so there's nothing extra to craft there.

Total shopping list

Buffered quantities, so this list already includes the roughly 20% RNG cushion, and it already accounts for the chained reagents noted above.

Mithril Bar and Thorium Bar dominate the list between them, which lines up with how the second half of this profession feels in practice: cheap tin-and-copper tinkering early, then an ore-hungry back half once you're building casings and tubes.

Where this route disagrees with the usual advice

The most common published bracket for Heavy Blasting Powder rides it from around 135 to 150. Our client data puts that recipe's gray point at 145, five points short of that target, so the last five points of that bracket earn nothing no matter how many you craft. This route avoids the dead zone entirely by using Bronze Framework and Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor across that whole stretch instead, both verified orange or yellow for their full range here.

The usual quantity for the 75-90 Coarse Blasting Powder bracket runs well past fifty Coarse Stone. Our data-verified expectation for that exact ten-point stretch is 17 crafts, 21 with the buffer, since the recipe stays close to guaranteed almost the entire way. That's the padding-versus-expectation gap described above, just a particularly large example of it.

Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor is usually treated as a one-point filler recipe squeezed in around skill 194. Its real window (guaranteed to 175, gray at 215) makes it one of the strongest single-reagent recipes in the whole climb, so this route builds a full 30-point bracket around it (165-195) instead of a one-craft afterthought.

FAQ

How many crafts does 1-300 Engineering take in Classic? The fifteen bracket rows in the table above add up to around 360 crafts on average. Add the chained reagent top-ups described under the table (extra Rough Blasting Powder, Handful of Copper Bolts, Coarse Blasting Powder, and the Solid Blasting Powder that never gets its own row), and the true average is closer to 470, about 580 with the buffer. RNG in the yellow windows means your run can land higher still.

Why did I need more materials than the table said? Two reasons. Once a recipe turns yellow, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray, which is what the Buy column's 20% buffer covers. Separately, a few recipes in this route (Rough Blasting Powder, Handful of Copper Bolts, Coarse Blasting Powder, and Solid Blasting Powder) are also reagents for a later bracket, so you'll craft more of them than their own skill bracket alone requires. Both effects are called out with exact numbers above.

Does this route work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the same Classic Era client, so the recipes, windows, and counts are identical. Season of Discovery adds recipes and may change the best picks there.

What character level do I need for 300 Engineering? Level 35, for Artisan training. Journeyman needs level 10 and Expert needs level 20, so the profession roughly keeps pace with normal leveling.

Do I need to make a Gnomish or Goblin choice, or hunt down vendor recipes, to hit 300? The specialization choice doesn't matter for this route; every recipe here is available to both sides. The two vendor recipes, Thorium Widget and Thorium Tube, aren't gated behind anything beyond having the skill and finding the vendor, so buy them opportunistically and keep training on trainer recipes until you do.

When this guide changes

The craft counts and color windows come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.9.68940). Blizzard rarely touches Era profession data, but if a patch changes recipe thresholds, or Season of Discovery picks are added, the numbers here get recomputed and the update noted. If a bracket in your game shows different colors than described, assume a patch moved it and check back.
