MoP Classic Engineering Leveling Guide (1-600)

Numbers on this page are computed from the MoP Classic client, build 5.5.4.68806. Applies to Mists of Pandaria progression realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

Engineering on MoP Classic runs from 1 to 600 across every ore tier in the game, and the honest total is close to 1,900 crafts once you count the extra copies of bolts, powders, and casings that later recipes eat as reagents. This guide gives you the bracket route, the craft count expected at each step, and one shopping list you can fill before you start.

Every number here is computed from the MoP Classic client data, not estimated. Where the route and the community consensus disagree, or where our data caught a step that does not actually work the way it is usually described, the disagreement is called out rather than smoothed over.

What you need

Engineering trains in the same rank sequence as every other MoP Classic profession: 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450, 525. If your skill stalls dead on one of those numbers, you are not unlucky, you are untrained, and a trainer visit is what unsticks it.

Unlike Alchemy, Engineering has no single reagent that carries the whole route. Almost every recipe below eats a Mining-tier ore bar, so the profession leans hard on having a steady ore supply or a full purse to buy bars on the Auction House. Cloth (Wool, Medium Leather, Windwool) and a handful of stones round out the early game.

One item is a special case: Tinker's Kit. It shows up as a reagent well before its own recipe is worth leveling on (its own crafting window only opens at 575), so treat it as a tradeable commodity you buy from other engineers rather than something you make yourself in the 390-450 stretch. You only craft it yourself once you reach the bracket that uses it to level.

How the craft counts work

A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's real yellow and gray thresholds in the client data. Some Engineering recipes hand back more than one item per craft (a batch of bolts, a stack of powder); that changes how far your materials stretch, not how the skill math works. The Buy column adds 20 percent on top of the expectation, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers.

Several recipes below are reagents for a later bracket, not just skill filler. Where that happens the Materials column names the earlier item directly (for example "Handful of Obsidium Bolts x90") rather than re-listing raw ore, since you already made a batch of it a few brackets back. If a later bracket needs more of an intermediate than its own leveling bracket produced, craft a few extra copies from the same raw ore. It costs nothing in skill either way.

The 195-255 stretch is the expensive part of Classic Engineering. Both Mithril Tube and Mithril Casing open already inside their own yellow band, so none of those 60 points are guaranteed. That is not a mistake in the numbers, it is just what Mithril-tier Engineering costs.

Ghost Iron Bar tops the list because three separate late-game brackets (G91 Landshark, Tinker's Kit, Thermal Anvil) all draw on Ghost Iron Bolts and High-Explosive Gunpowder, and both of those are themselves crafted from Ghost Iron Bar. If you stockpile leftovers from an earlier bracket instead of buying fresh each time, your real total will land under this list, not over it.

Where this route disagrees with the usual advice

Clockwork Box (100-125) does not need the "open the box" trick. The usual advice splits this bracket into crafting Clockwork Boxes to 113, then opening them for extra skill points to reach 125. Our data shows the recipe itself stays orange, meaning every craft is a guaranteed skill point, all the way to exactly 125. Just keep crafting the box; there is nothing to open.

Heavy Blasting Powder cannot carry you to 150. The commonly published route rides Heavy Blasting Powder from 125 to 150. Its actual gray threshold is 145, so the last five points would cost nothing at all. We cap it at 145 and use Whirring Bronze Gizmo instead, which shares the same starting point but stays useful to 175, making it the cheaper choice for that stretch besides being the correct one.

The Outland reagent chain is simpler than it looks. Guides commonly route 300-355 through Fel Iron Bomb and Adamantite Grenade, both of which need three different pre-crafted components in play at once, plus a vendor-limited recipe (White Smoke Flare) whose stock we cannot verify from client data. Our route covers the identical skill range with Fel Iron Casing, Adamantite Frame, and Hardened Adamantite Tube, each needing only one or two raw bars. Same verified windows, far less juggling.

Mirror Scope is not the cheapest way to finish at 600. The popular final recipe, Mirror Scope, opens ten points into its own yellow band with only a 25-point spread to gray, so its last crafts get expensive fast. Thermal Anvil covers the same 585-600 stretch on a 40-point band starting at the same yellow threshold, which is provably fewer expected crafts for the identical skill gain, and it also skips the jewelcrafting reagent Mirror Scope needs.

FAQ

Does this work on any MoP Classic realm? Yes. The route is computed from the Mists of Pandaria progression client, so it applies to Mists of Pandaria progression realms. Classic Era and retail have different recipes and different caps, and each has its own guide.

Do I need Mining to level Engineering? Not strictly, every material on this list is a normal Auction House commodity. But Engineering has no substitute reagent the way Alchemy has herbs; almost the entire route runs on ore bars, so a Mining alt or a steady AH budget for ore matters more here than it does for any gathering-adjacent profession.

Can I skip ahead if my Engineering is already partly leveled? Yes. Find your current skill in the bracket tables, start there, and buy only the materials from that row down. The totals are additive.

Why do I keep failing to gain skill even though the recipe is not gray? Between yellow and gray, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. Several brackets on this route (Mithril Tube, Mithril Casing, Ghost Iron Bolts) start already inside the yellow band, so expect a slower grind through those than the guaranteed-orange brackets around them.

Do I need to craft Tinker's Kit myself for the 390-450 stretch? No. Its own recipe is not worth leveling on until skill 575, so treat every Tinker's Kit you need before then as an Auction House purchase. You only craft it for skill once you reach the 575-585 bracket.

When this guide changes

This route is computed from MoP Classic client build 5.5.4.68806. If Blizzard adjusts recipe thresholds or adds recipes in a content patch, the brackets shift and this page is recomputed from the new client data. The material quantities are expectations from the current thresholds, so they move with them.
