Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.
Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.
Classic Enchanting leveling from 1 to 300 runs through twenty crafting stops and roughly 330 crafts total. Four of those stops are single-craft rod recipes that carry you across odd-numbered skill breakpoints; the rest are the bracer, cloak, and jewelry enchants that make up the bulk of the climb. This guide gives you the bracket-by-bracket route, expected craft counts computed from the current Classic Era game data, and a shopping list with an honest RNG buffer built in.
It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms, which all run the same 1.15 client. Season of Discovery adds recipes this guide does not cover.
What you need
Train each rank before its cap stops you: Apprentice caps at 75, Journeyman at 150 (character level 10), Expert at 225 (character level 20), and Artisan at 300 (character level 35).
Most of the reagents on this route, the dusts and essences, come from disenchanting armor and weapons rather than a vendor. Stock up as you level other characters or clear quests. The five rod recipes on this route are the exception: each needs a separately sourced base rod (Copper, Silver, Golden, Truesilver, Arcanite) plus a gem or pearl, and none of that comes from disenchanting.
One route note before you start: four brackets below exist only to move your skill across a single odd number (101, 156, 201, 295). Our game data lists every recipe on this route as learnable at skill 1, but that column is already known to miss real trainer gates elsewhere in Classic (Alchemy's transmutes are the documented example), and these odd breakpoints line up with the same kind of gap. The rod crafts stay on the route because they clear it regardless of the exact mechanism underneath.
How the craft counts work
A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's actual color windows in the game data. Expected means average: half your runs will need more. The Buy column adds about 20% on top, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers. If you hit the target skill early, you keep the leftover materials.
The route
1-2: Runed Copper Rod
Your very first craft. Runed Copper Rod is guaranteed until skill 5 and grays at 10, so this single craft never fails, and it gives you a working enchanting rod for every craft after it.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (1 craft) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Rod | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Strange Dust | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Lesser Magic Essence | 1 | 1 | 2 |
2-90: Enchant Bracer - Minor Health
Enchant Bracer - Minor Health is guaranteed until 70 and grays at 110. Riding it past 70 costs more crafts than the guaranteed stretch alone, since the last 20 points here sit in a shrinking chance window, but it is still the cheapest single-reagent option this early.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (96 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strange Dust | 1 | 96 | 115 |
90-100: Enchant Bracer - Minor Stamina
Switch to Enchant Bracer - Minor Stamina at 90. It is guaranteed all the way to 100, so these ten points cost three times the dust per craft but carry zero risk, the better trade once Minor Health's chance has thinned out.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (10 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strange Dust | 3 | 30 | 36 |
100-101: Runed Silver Rod
Second rod stop. Runed Silver Rod stays orange until 130, so the single point needed here is certain.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (1 craft) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver Rod | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Strange Dust | 6 | 6 | 12 |
| Greater Magic Essence | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Shadowgem | 1 | 1 | 2 |
101-110: Greater Magic Wand
Greater Magic Wand is guaranteed until 150, so all nine points in this bracket are certain.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (9 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Wood | 1 | 9 | 11 |
| Greater Magic Essence | 1 | 9 | 11 |
110-135: Enchant Cloak - Minor Agility
Enchant Cloak - Minor Agility is guaranteed until 135, exactly where this bracket ends, so all 25 crafts land.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (25 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lesser Astral Essence | 1 | 25 | 30 |
135-155: Enchant Bracer - Lesser Stamina
Enchant Bracer - Lesser Stamina is guaranteed until 155. Another clean bracket, twenty points for twenty crafts.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (20 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soul Dust | 2 | 40 | 48 |
155-156: Runed Golden Rod
Third rod stop. Runed Golden Rod stays orange until 175, so the single point here is guaranteed.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (1 craft) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Rod | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Iridescent Pearl | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Greater Astral Essence | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| Soul Dust | 2 | 2 | 4 |
156-185: Enchant Bracer - Lesser Strength
Enchant Bracer - Lesser Strength is guaranteed until 165 and grays at 205. The last 20 points of this bracket sit inside its chance window, which is why the expected count runs above the raw 29-point gap.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (37 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soul Dust | 2 | 74 | 88 |
185-200: Enchant Bracer - Strength
Enchant Bracer - Strength is guaranteed until 200, so this bracket is fifteen clean points.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (15 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vision Dust | 1 | 15 | 18 |
200-201: Runed Truesilver Rod
Fourth rod stop. Runed Truesilver Rod is guaranteed until 220, so this one point is certain.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (1 craft) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Truesilver Rod | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Black Pearl | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Greater Mystic Essence | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| Vision Dust | 2 | 2 | 4 |
201-220: Enchant Bracer - Strength
Back on Enchant Bracer - Strength for the next stretch, now inside its chance window (guaranteed only below 200, gray at 240). Expect a few more crafts than the raw 19-point gap.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (27 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vision Dust | 1 | 27 | 32 |
220-225: Enchant Cloak - Greater Defense
Enchant Cloak - Greater Defense is guaranteed until 225, exactly where this bracket stops.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (5 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vision Dust | 3 | 15 | 18 |
225-230: Enchant Gloves - Agility
Enchant Gloves - Agility is guaranteed until 230.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (5 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lesser Nether Essence | 1 | 5 | 6 |
| Vision Dust | 1 | 5 | 6 |
230-235: Enchant Boots - Stamina
Enchant Boots - Stamina is guaranteed until 235.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (5 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vision Dust | 5 | 25 | 30 |
235-250: Enchant Chest - Superior Health
Enchant Chest - Superior Health is guaranteed only to 240 and grays at 280, so ten of these fifteen points are a declining chance. This is the priciest single bracket on the route, so budget for it.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (17 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vision Dust | 6 | 102 | 120 |
250-265: Lesser Mana Oil
Lesser Mana Oil is guaranteed to 260 and grays at 280. It is also the first bracket to use vials.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (16 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dream Dust | 3 | 48 | 57 |
| Purple Lotus | 2 | 32 | 38 |
| Crystal Vial | 1 | 16 | 19 |
265-294: Enchant Shield - Greater Stamina
Enchant Shield - Greater Stamina is guaranteed to 285 and grays at 325, so most of this long bracket carries no RNG at all.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (31 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dream Dust | 10 | 310 | 370 |
294-295: Runed Arcanite Rod
Fifth and last rod stop. Runed Arcanite Rod is guaranteed until 310, and it is also the single most expensive craft on the whole route.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (1 craft) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcanite Rod | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Golden Pearl | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Illusion Dust | 10 | 10 | 20 |
| Greater Eternal Essence | 4 | 4 | 8 |
| Small Brilliant Shard | 4 | 4 | 8 |
| Large Brilliant Shard | 2 | 2 | 4 |
295-300: Enchant Cloak - Superior Defense
Enchant Cloak - Superior Defense is guaranteed until 305, so the last five points of the climb to 300 are certain.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (5 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illusion Dust | 8 | 40 | 48 |

Where this route disagrees with the usual published advice
Three places, all worth knowing before you start.
Our path-computation engine, which optimizes purely for fewest total reagents, would route the last 74 points of this climb (226 to 300) through a single recipe called Sigil of Flowing Waters. That recipe is Season of Discovery content, tagged as learnable at skill 1 only because the game data does not capture its real, non-Era gate. It has no place in a Classic Era route, so we replaced it with the seven verified recipes covering 220 to 300 above.
The commonly published route also treats Enchant Bracer - Minor Health as fully guaranteed from skill 2 to 90. Our data puts its guaranteed window at 1 to 70; the 70 to 90 stretch is already inside a declining chance. The extra risk is modest in practice (our expected count for skill 2 to 90 is 96 crafts against a commonly cited 88), but the claim that the whole stretch is guaranteed is not correct.
Three later brackets are commonly quoted well above what the math needs, past what a 20% buffer would explain. Enchant Bracer - Strength from 201 to 220 is often quoted around 33 crafts against our 27. Enchant Chest - Superior Health from 235 to 250 is often quoted around 25 crafts (150 Vision Dust) against our 17 (102 Vision Dust). Lesser Mana Oil from 250 to 265 is often quoted around 20 crafts against our 16. All three recipes check out on their windows; only the quantities were padded.
FAQ
How many crafts does 1-300 Enchanting take in Classic? Around 330 crafts on average with this route. RNG in the yellow windows means your run can land higher, which is why the shopping list carries a 20% buffer.
Why did I need more materials than the table said? Once a recipe turns yellow, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. The Expected column is the average outcome; the Buy column covers a normal unlucky run. A very unlucky run can still exceed it.
Why does this route include so many single-craft rod recipes? Four brackets on this route exist only to move you across one odd-numbered skill point (101, 156, 201, 295). Our game data shows every recipe here as learnable at skill 1, which is known to be unreliable as a real acquisition gate elsewhere in Classic, and the pattern here looks like the same issue. The rod crafts clear the breakpoint either way, so the route keeps them.
Does this route work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the same Classic Era client, so the recipes, windows, and counts are identical. Season of Discovery adds recipes and may change the best picks there.
What character level do I need for 300 Enchanting? Level 35, for Artisan training. Journeyman needs level 10 and Expert needs level 20, so the profession roughly keeps pace with normal leveling.
When this guide changes
The craft counts and color windows come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.9). Blizzard rarely touches Era profession data, but if a patch changes recipe thresholds, or Season of Discovery picks are added, the numbers here get recomputed and the update noted. If a bracket in your game shows different colors than described, assume a patch moved it and check back.
