MoP Classic Enchanting Leveling Guide (1-600)

Numbers on this page are computed from the MoP Classic client, build 5.5.4.68806. Applies to Mists of Pandaria progression realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

Enchanting on MoP Classic runs from 1 to 600 in five stops, one per expansion, and the whole route is about 640 crafts outside the one stretch where the client data does not support a craft count at all. This guide gives you the bracket route, the craft count expected at each step, and one shopping list you can fill in a single Auction House trip before you start.

Every number here is computed from the MoP Classic client data, not estimated. Where the route and the community consensus disagree, the disagreement is called out rather than smoothed over, including one stretch where the client data does not support a workable recipe at all.

What you need

Enchanting does not consume a base item the way Alchemy consumes vials or Tailoring consumes cloth. You apply the enchant directly to a piece of gear, so the only per-craft cost is the dust, essence, or shard the recipe calls for.

Those reagents mostly come from Disenchanting old gear, which every enchanter can do from skill 1. If you would rather not carry a bag of greens and blues around while you level, every material in this guide is also a normal Auction House commodity on progression realms.

Enchanting is trained in ranks like every profession, and the breakpoints land at 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450, and 525. If your skill stalls dead on one of those numbers, you are not unlucky, you need to visit a trainer.

How the craft counts work

A recipe is orange while your skill is below its yellow threshold, and every orange craft raises your skill. Between yellow and gray, each craft has a diminishing chance to give a point, and at gray it gives nothing.

Almost every Enchanting recipe in the MoP Classic client is flagged as learnable from skill 1, because these older recipes are gated by trainer rank rather than by skill. That does not mean the recipe stays orange forever, though. It is still guaranteed to skill you up all the way to its own yellow threshold, no matter how far below that your current skill sits. That is why some brackets below cover thirty or forty points on a single recipe.

The "expected crafts" column is the mathematical expectation for that bracket, computed from the recipe's real yellow and gray values in the client data. The "buy" column adds 20 percent on top, because expectation is an average and your run will not be average. If you end a bracket with leftovers, that is normal and intended.

The last row is not a typo. Enchant Cloak - Greater Intellect turns orange at 500 and stays guaranteed until 520, but the last 20 points before it goes fully gray at 540 are almost entirely luck, which is why the expected craft count jumps from a guaranteed 20 crafts to 92. This is the same "last few points before a rank cap are brutal" pattern every profession has; Enchanting's version of it just happens to land here.

A gap from 540 to 550. Our client data does not show a single Enchanting recipe becoming orange between skill 540 and skill 550. Every Cataclysm era recipe available at that point, including Enchant Cloak - Greater Intellect above, is fully gray by 540, and the earliest Pandaria tier recipe we can verify does not turn orange until 550. We are not going to invent an expected craft count for a window where the numbers show zero working recipes. Keep whatever Cataclysm tier recipe you were using on hand and expect this stretch to be slow and largely luck driven; it opens back up as soon as the skill 550 recipes below come into range.

Hypnotic Dust and Infinite Dust dominate the list because the Northrend and Cataclysm stretches both run long single recipes through them, and the 500 to 540 grind alone accounts for most of the Hypnotic Dust total. Buy those two in bulk before anything else.

Where this route disagrees with the usual advice

Four places, some in your favour and one that is simply missing from the data.

The commonly published route opens with a one-off Runed Copper Rod craft before the first stat enchant. That recipe is real in the client data, but its window is skill 5 to 10, a handful of guaranteed points at most. It does not meaningfully change your route, so this guide skips straight to the first real stat enchant.

The commonly published route also uses Greater Magic Wand as a leveling step around skill 100. The client data puts that recipe's real window at 110 to 150, not 100 to 110, so it is not actually guaranteed that early. This guide uses a stat enchant with an equivalent window instead.

Near the top of the route, the commonly published guide places Enchant Cloak - Superior Intellect at skill 527 to 552 and a cluster of ring enchants at 552 to 556. Our client data puts Enchant Cloak - Superior Intellect's real window at 550 to 600, and the ring enchants at 555 to 560. Both are placed roughly 20 points too early in the commonly published route.

That timing error sits right next to the biggest disagreement: our data shows no Enchanting recipe at all becomes available between skill 540 and 550. The commonly published route glides through this stretch without comment, using recipes our data shows are already gray by then. We would rather show you the honest gap than paper over it with an invented craft count.

Beyond those specifics, the commonly published quantities run consistently higher than ours across the guide, the same pattern we have found in every other profession we have checked. That is padding, not a disagreement about the mechanics; our buy column already carries its own 20 percent buffer.

FAQ

Does this work on any MoP Classic realm? Yes. The route is computed from the Mists of Pandaria progression client, so it applies to Mists of Pandaria progression realms. Classic Era and retail have different recipes and different caps, and each has its own guide.

Can I skip ahead if my Enchanting is already partly leveled? Yes. Find your current skill in the bracket tables, start there, and buy only the materials from that row down. The totals are additive.

Why do I keep failing to gain skill even though the recipe is not gray? Between yellow and gray, skill ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. If you are stuck for a long run of crafts, check that you are not sitting on a training rank at 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450, or 525.

Do I need to Disenchant my own gear, or can I just buy the materials? Either works. Disenchanting is Enchanting's own utility and it is the cheapest source of dust and essence, but every material in this guide is also sold on the Auction House, so buying the full list up front works just as well.

Why is there no recipe listed between skill 540 and 550? Because our client data does not have one. Every recipe available at 540 is already gray, and the next tier does not turn orange until 550. See the note in the Cataclysm section for how to handle it.

When this guide changes

This route is computed from MoP Classic client build 5.5.4.68806. If Blizzard adjusts recipe thresholds, closes the 540 to 550 gap, or adds recipes in a content patch, the brackets shift and this page is recomputed from the new client data. The material quantities are expectations from the current thresholds, so they move with them.
