Classic Era Tailoring Leveling Guide (1-300)

Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

This is a full Tailoring leveling route for Classic Era, 1 to 300, with craft counts computed from the actual skill-up windows in the game data instead of copied ballpark numbers. It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms. Season of Discovery uses the same core recipes but adds its own, which this guide does not cover.

What you need

Tailoring needs no gathered materials and no companion profession. Everything is cloth from mob drops plus cheap vendor supplies, so you can level it entirely from the Auction House and a trainer.

  • Character level gates. Journeyman Tailoring requires level 10, Expert requires level 20, and Artisan requires level 35. You hit those training points at skill 75, 125, and 220 on this route.
  • Vendor supplies. Coarse Thread, Fine Thread, Silken Thread, Heavy Silken Thread, Rune Thread, the dyes, and Bleach all come from trade supply vendors. Buy them as you go.
  • Two patterns to hunt. Everything on this route is trainer-taught except the last two picks. Pattern: Runecloth Bag and Pattern: Runecloth Gloves are limited-supply vendor patterns sold in Winterspring. If someone bought them out, verified fallbacks are listed in those brackets.
  • Bolts are crafted, not bought. Every bolt in the tables below is something you make from raw cloth. The totals at the bottom convert everything back to raw cloth for shopping.
A word on the numbers. Below a recipe's yellow threshold every craft gives a skill point, so those brackets are exact. Between yellow and gray each craft is a roll. For those brackets we show the expected craft count and a plan-for count that adds roughly 20 percent. Extra bolts are never wasted; later brackets eat them.

The leveling route

1-45: Bolt of Linen Cloth

Learn Bolt of Linen Cloth at the trainer and convert your Linen Cloth. Skill-ups are guaranteed to 25, then it turns yellow until it grays out at 50. Stop at 45; the last few points before gray are not worth the cloth.

Expected crafts: 63. Plan for 75.

MaterialPer craftPlan (75 crafts)
Linen Cloth2150
You need about 107 linen bolts across the whole route. The rest get crafted later with no skill-ups; that is fine, they are reagents, not progress.

45-70: Linen Belt

Linen Belt stays yellow all the way to 85, which makes it the cleanest linen recipe for this stretch. Guaranteed skill-ups until 50, rolls after that.

Expected crafts: 34. Plan for 41.

MaterialPer craftPlan (41 crafts)
Bolt of Linen Cloth141
Coarse Thread141

70-75: Reinforced Linen Cape

Reinforced Linen Cape is guaranteed until skill 85, so this short bracket is exact: five crafts, five points, no RNG.

Exactly 5 crafts.

MaterialPer craft5 crafts
Bolt of Linen Cloth210
Coarse Thread315
Train Journeyman Tailoring at 75. It requires character level 10.

75-100: Bolt of Woolen Cloth

Switch to Bolt of Woolen Cloth. Guaranteed to 90, gray at 105. The bolts feed the shoulder crafts at 110, so nothing here is throwaway.

Expected crafts: 31. Plan for 37.

MaterialPer craftPlan (37 crafts)
Wool Cloth3111

100-110: Simple Kilt

Simple Kilt burns linen bolts, which is why it wins this bracket: linen is the cheapest cloth in the game. The recipe is yellow from 100, so this whole bracket is rolls.

Expected crafts: 12. Plan for 14.

MaterialPer craftPlan (14 crafts)
Bolt of Linen Cloth456
Fine Thread114
If wool is unusually cheap on your realm, Woolen Cape covers the same window (guaranteed to 100, gray at 135) at 1 Bolt of Woolen Cloth and 1 Fine Thread per craft, same expected 12 crafts.

110-125: Double-stitched Woolen Shoulders

Double-stitched Woolen Shoulders is guaranteed until 135, so this bracket is exact.

Exactly 15 crafts.

MaterialPer craft15 crafts
Bolt of Woolen Cloth345
Fine Thread230
Train Expert Tailoring at 125. It requires character level 20.

125-145: Bolt of Silk Cloth

Bolt of Silk Cloth carries you to 145, guaranteed until 135. Here is the catch: the silk brackets ahead consume about 205 silk bolts total, far more than the 48 you make here. Keep converting silk into bolts whenever you restock; the extra crafts give no skill-ups but the cloth is never wasted.

Expected crafts: 40. Plan for 48.

MaterialPer craftPlan (48 crafts)
Silk Cloth4192

145-160: Azure Silk Hood

Azure Silk Hood is guaranteed until 155 and grays at 165. The Blue Dye comes from vendors.

Expected crafts: 17. Plan for 20.

MaterialPer craftPlan (20 crafts)
Bolt of Silk Cloth240
Blue Dye240
Fine Thread120

160-170: Silk Headband

Silk Headband is guaranteed until 170. Exact bracket, no buffer needed.

Exactly 10 crafts.

MaterialPer craft10 crafts
Bolt of Silk Cloth330
Fine Thread220

170-175: Formal White Shirt

Formal White Shirt is guaranteed until 180. Five exact crafts, and the shirts sometimes sell to roleplayers, which beats vendoring.

Exactly 5 crafts.

MaterialPer craft5 crafts
Bolt of Silk Cloth315
Bleach210
Fine Thread15

175-185: Bolt of Mageweave

Bolt of Mageweave is guaranteed until 180 and grays at 185, a tight window. Like silk, you need far more bolts than this bracket makes: about 100 total for the mageweave crafts ahead. Craft the rest as needed.

Expected crafts: 17. Plan for 20.

MaterialPer craftPlan (20 crafts)
Mageweave Cloth5100

185-205: Crimson Silk Vest

Back to silk. Crimson Silk Vest is guaranteed all the way to 205, so twenty crafts is twenty points, exact.

Exactly 20 crafts.

MaterialPer craft20 crafts
Bolt of Silk Cloth480
Red Dye240
Fine Thread240

205-215: Crimson Silk Pantaloons

Crimson Silk Pantaloons is guaranteed until 215. Another exact bracket.

MaterialPer craft10 crafts
Bolt of Silk Cloth440
Red Dye220
Silken Thread220

215-220: Orange Mageweave Shirt

Orange Mageweave Shirt is guaranteed until 220. Five exact crafts and you can train Artisan.

Exactly 5 crafts.

MaterialPer craft5 crafts
Bolt of Mageweave15
Orange Dye15
Heavy Silken Thread15
Train Artisan Tailoring at 220. It requires character level 35.

220-230: Black Mageweave Gloves

Black Mageweave Gloves is guaranteed until 230. Exact.

Exactly 10 crafts.

MaterialPer craft10 crafts
Bolt of Mageweave220
Heavy Silken Thread220

230-250: Black Mageweave Headband

Black Mageweave Headband is guaranteed until 245, then rolls to its gray at 275. You leave it at 250 for runecloth.

Expected crafts: 21. Plan for 25.

MaterialPer craftPlan (25 crafts)
Bolt of Mageweave375
Heavy Silken Thread250

250-260: Bolt of Runecloth

Bolt of Runecloth is guaranteed until 255 and grays at 260. This is the big one for stockpiling: the final three brackets consume about 231 runecloth bolts. Convert runecloth into bolts every time you restock from here on.

Expected crafts: 17. Plan for 20.

MaterialPer craftPlan (20 crafts)
Runecloth5100

260-280: Runecloth Belt

Runecloth Belt is guaranteed until 270 and does not gray until 300, which makes it the workhorse of the endgame stretch and your safety net if the vendor patterns below are gone.

Expected crafts: 22. Plan for 27.

MaterialPer craftPlan (27 crafts)
Bolt of Runecloth327
Rune Thread127
Correction on the bolt line: 3 per craft means 81 bolts for the planned 27 crafts.
MaterialPer craftPlan (27 crafts)
Bolt of Runecloth381
Rune Thread127

280-290: Runecloth Bag

Runecloth Bag needs the limited-supply vendor pattern from Winterspring. It is worth the trip: the recipe rolls through this whole bracket but does not gray until 305, and you end up with a stack of 14-slot bags people actually use.

Expected crafts: 15. Plan for 18.

MaterialPer craftPlan (18 crafts)
Bolt of Runecloth590
Rugged Leather236
Rune Thread118
No pattern? Keep crafting Runecloth Belt. Expect about 21 more belts to reach 290, which is 63 bolts and 21 Rune Thread.

290-300: Runecloth Gloves

Runecloth Gloves also comes from a limited-supply Winterspring vendor pattern. Guaranteed nothing here: the recipe is yellow from 290 with gray at 320, so the last ten points are all rolls.

Expected crafts: 12. Plan for 15.

MaterialPer craftPlan (15 crafts)
Bolt of Runecloth460
Rugged Leather460
Rune Thread115
Verified alternative with the same skill window: Brightcloth Cloak at 4 Bolt of Runecloth, 2 Gold Bar, and 1 Rune Thread per craft, same expected 12 crafts. Use it if Rugged Leather is expensive and Gold Bars are not.

Total shopping list

Bolts are folded back into raw cloth here. The expected column is the straight math; the buy column adds the RNG buffer on brackets where skill-ups are rolls. Exact brackets get no padding, which is why some rows match.

FAQ

Why not level with Mooncloth after 100? The raw skill-up math makes Mooncloth look efficient, but the recipe has a multi-day cooldown per craft and eats two Felcloth each time, and Felcloth is expensive drop-farmed cloth. As a leveling tool it is a trap. Craft Mooncloth on cooldown for profit once you are leveled, not to gain skill.

How accurate are the craft counts? Exact where the game guarantees skill-ups, expected values where it rolls. Below a recipe's yellow threshold every craft is a point, and those brackets carry no padding. Between yellow and gray the counts are averages, so your run can land above or below them; the buy column covers roughly a 20 percent bad streak.

What if the Runecloth Bag and Runecloth Gloves patterns are sold out? Runecloth Belt does not gray until 300, so you can belt-craft the entire 260-300 stretch. It costs more bolts the closer you push to 300, which is why the bag and glove patterns are worth checking first.

Does this guide work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the Classic Era recipe data this guide is computed from. Season of Discovery keeps these recipes too but adds its own runecrafting-era options that are out of scope here.

What character level do I need to hit 300 Tailoring? Level 35, for Artisan Tailoring at skill 220. Before that you need level 10 for Journeyman at 75 and level 20 for Expert at 125.

When this guide changes

The craft counts and thresholds above come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.x). Classic Era recipes have been stable for years and we do not expect them to move, but if a patch touches skill-up thresholds, reagents, or pattern availability, the numbers here get recomputed from the new data, not hand-adjusted. If you are reading this on a Season of Discovery character, expect extra recipe options this page does not model.
