Retail Inscription Leveling Guide (1-100)

Numbers on this page are computed from the Retail (Midnight) client, build 12.0.7.68887. Applies to live retail realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

Retail Inscription on the Midnight profession tier runs from skill 1 to 100, and the fastest verified route only needs two recipes. Midnight's inscription skill line holds 77 recipes in total, but most of them sit outside the window that actually raises your skill, so the math points at the same two crafts almost the whole way. This guide gives you the exact route, the expected craft count for each recipe computed from the current client data, and a shopping list with an honest RNG buffer built in.

What you need

This guide covers the crafting route only. Knowledge Points and specialization trees affect how fast you unlock recipe ranks and how many crafts you get from your Knowledge, but that data is not part of the route below. Check your in-game profession page for your current specialization choices before you start; this guide will not tell you which nodes to pick.

The route below uses two recipes and their reagents. Nothing here requires a vendor recipe or a limited-supply purchase; both crafts train normally.

How the craft counts work

A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while your skill is below its yellow threshold, a shrinking chance while it sits between yellow and gray, and nothing once it turns gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's real color windows in the current client data. Expected means average: half of all runs need more than this. The Buy column adds a 20 percent buffer on top, and the shopping list totals already include it.

The second recipe on this route stays orange for a long stretch and then tapers slowly through its final fifteen points, which is why its expected craft count is nearly double its skill range. That tail is real RNG, not padding.

The route

Sienna Ink carries you from 1 to 35. It stays guaranteed until 25 and goes gray at 35, so most of this bracket is sure points.

From 35 you move to Floating Void-Touched Tome, which carries the rest of the climb to 100. It is guaranteed until 85 and gray at 100. This was the only recipe available to cover that stretch; every fully common-reagent option we checked at skill 35 came up short of covering the range, so this route uses the best available recipe there instead of leaving a gap. Its reagents, Codified Azeroot and Soul Cipher, are not common trade goods; they are the actual required materials for this recipe, not a filler substitute.

Where this differs from the usual leveling advice

Most profession leveling guides, including our own Classic and MoP Classic guides, walk you through eight to fourteen brackets because older skill tiers were built that way. Midnight's inscription tier is not built that way. Several of its recipes carry very wide guaranteed windows, some staying orange across almost the entire 1 to 100 range, so the mathematically fastest path only needs two crafts to cover the whole climb. If you expected a long bracket ladder here, that expectation comes from older expansions, not from this tier's actual recipe design.

The second recipe also breaks a pattern readers may expect from Classic-style guides, where every leveling recipe uses cheap, common trade goods. Floating Void-Touched Tome does not. No fully common-reagent recipe covers the 35 to 100 stretch in the current data, so this route uses the best recipe that does cover it and says so plainly rather than routing you through a longer, purely cosmetic bracket list to avoid it.

FAQ

Why does this route only use two recipes? Because that is what the current client data supports. Midnight's inscription recipes have unusually wide guaranteed skill-up windows, and the greedy fastest-path calculation genuinely only needs two crafts to cover 1 to 100. It is not a shortcut or a simplification; it is the real shape of this skill tier.

Do I need specific Knowledge Points or a specialization to follow this route? This guide does not cover Knowledge Points or specialization trees, because that data is not part of the crafting route it computes. Check your profession page in-game for your current specialization before you start.

Are Codified Azeroot and Soul Cipher hard to source? They are not common trade goods the way early Classic herbs are. They are the genuine required reagents for Floating Void-Touched Tome, and no fully common-reagent recipe covers the same skill range in the current data, so this route uses them rather than skip a step.

Does this route cover earlier expansion Inscription tiers? No. This guide covers only the current Midnight tier (skill 1-100). Earlier expansion inscription skill lines use different recipes and are not part of this route.

Will the craft counts change after a patch? Yes, if Blizzard changes a recipe's color window or reagent cost, the expected crafts and buy quantities shift with it, and this guide gets recomputed from the new client data.

When this guide changes

The craft counts and color windows here come from retail build 12.0.7.68887. If a future patch changes Sienna Ink's or Floating Void-Touched Tome's trivial windows, changes their reagents, or adds a recipe that beats this path, the route gets recomputed and the update noted here.
