Numbers on this page are computed from the MoP Classic client, build 5.5.4.68806. Applies to Mists of Pandaria progression realms.
Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.
Inscription on MoP Classic runs from 1 to 600 in five stops, one per expansion, and the whole climb is roughly 630 crafts of pigments and inks. This guide gives you the bracket route, the craft count expected at each step, and one shopping list you can fill before you start.
Every number here is computed from the MoP Classic client data, not estimated. The commonly published route leans hard on "craft any orange glyph," which is not a real, checkable recipe. This guide replaces every one of those stretches with a specific ink or document recipe that has a known, verified skill window.
What you need
Inscription trains in ranks the same way every MoP profession does: Apprentice at 1, then Journeyman, Expert, Artisan, Master, Grand Master, and Zen Master unlocking at 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450, and 525. A trainer visit is required at each of those numbers or your skill will not move past them.
Almost everything you craft here is a pigment turning into an ink, or an ink turning into a scroll or document. Two items in this route do double duty: Ivory Ink and Ink of Dreams are each crafted once for their own skill-up bracket, then needed again in much larger quantity as a reagent for a later recipe. The shopping list below already accounts for both uses, but expect to sit down and mill or craft a second batch of each rather than assume the first batch covers everything.
One recipe here is not a consumable at all. Master's Inscription of the Axe applies its effect straight to an axe rather than creating a separate item, so keep one in your bags while you work through that bracket.
How the craft counts work
A recipe is orange while your skill sits below its yellow threshold, and every orange craft is a guaranteed point. Once you cross into yellow, each craft has a shrinking chance to award a point, and once you hit gray it awards nothing.
The "expected crafts" column below is the mathematical expectation for that bracket, built from the recipe's real yellow and gray thresholds in the client data. The "buy" column adds 20 percent on top of that expectation, because an average is not a guarantee and your actual run will land somewhere around it, not exactly on it. Extra materials left over at the end of a bracket are normal.
A few recipes in this route sit entirely below their yellow threshold for the whole bracket, so there is no RNG at all in that stretch. The buffer still applies to those rows for consistency, even though the math says you will not need it.
The route
Two recipes here straddle an expansion boundary. Where that happens, the same recipe appears twice, once at the end of one stop's table and once at the start of the next, with the craft count split at the boundary. It is the same recipe both times, just continued.

Where this route disagrees with the usual advice
The biggest disagreement is structural. Roughly half the sections in the commonly published Inscription route are listed as "craft any orange glyph" rather than a named recipe. That instruction cannot be checked against the client data at all, because it does not point at a specific spell, and it assumes you already know which glyphs you have unlocked. This guide only recommends recipes with a confirmed, fixed orange-to-gray window in the 5.5.4 client, so every step tells you exactly what to make next.
Two stretches of the published route, 386 to 400 and 541 to 595, are filled with recipes gated behind Blizzard's discovery system rather than a trainer. Discoveries are random, cannot be shopped for in advance, and cannot be planned around. This route avoids discovery entirely across all 600 points.
The published route also spends 480 to 485 on Lord Rottington's Pressed Wisp Book, which requires a random item drop just to learn in the first place. That is not something you can guarantee having when you sit down to level, so it is cut here in favor of a recipe with a normal trainer-taught path.
FAQ
Does this work on any MoP Classic realm? Yes. The route is computed from the Mists of Pandaria progression client, so it applies to Mists of Pandaria progression realms. Classic Era and retail run different recipe data and have their own guides.
Can I skip ahead if my Inscription is already partly leveled? Yes. Find your current skill in the bracket tables and start from there, buying only the materials for that row down. The shopping list totals are additive across whichever brackets you still need.
Why do I keep failing to gain skill even though the recipe is not gray? Between yellow and gray, a skill-up is a chance, not a guarantee, and that chance shrinks the closer you get to gray. If you stall on the same number for a long run of crafts, check that you are not sitting on an untrained rank at 75, 150, 225, 300, 375, 450, or 525.
Do I need Herbalism and Milling to level Inscription? No. Milling turns herbs into pigments, but the pigments and inks in the shopping list are both common Auction House commodities, so buying them works exactly as well as milling your own.
What do I do with Ivory Ink and Ink of Dreams once I have made a batch? Keep them rather than selling. Both get consumed again later in the route as a reagent, and the amount you need downstream is bigger than the batch you made while leveling through their own bracket, so you will end up crafting each one twice.
When this guide changes
This route is computed from MoP Classic client build 5.5.4.68806. If Blizzard adjusts recipe thresholds or adds recipes in a content patch, the brackets shift and this page gets recomputed from the new client data. The material quantities are expectations built on the current thresholds, so they move whenever the thresholds do.
