Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.
Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.
Classic Cooking leveling from 1 to 300 takes seven recipes and roughly 320 crafts. This guide gives you the exact bracket-by-bracket route, expected craft counts computed from the current Classic Era game data, and a shopping list with an honest RNG buffer built in.
It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms, which all run the same 1.15 client. Season of Discovery adds recipes this guide does not cover.
The route below leans on meat you loot while questing and a handful of vendor-bought reagents, not on raw fish. A pure reagent-count optimization of the same client data would push you onto fish-based recipes for most of the back half of the route, which works on paper but means leveling Fishing alongside Cooking. This route only touches fish for the final bracket.
What you need
Cooking's four ranks (Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Artisan) are trained the same way as any other profession: visit a cooking trainer once your skill clears the previous rank's cap. Crab Cake cannot be learned before skill 75, which the route already clears by the time you reach it, so it is not a blocker here.
Artisan Cooking, unlocked at 225, is the one exception. Unlike the other three ranks, it requires finishing a quest before you can train it, not just gold at the trainer. Get that quest done before you hit the Undermine Clam Chowder bracket, or you will be stuck at 225 with nothing to craft.
Beyond that, everything on this route is either a common mob drop or a vendor-bought reagent. No gathering profession is required to level Cooking.
How the craft counts work
A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's actual color windows in the game data. Expected means average: half your runs will need more. The Buy column adds about 20% on top, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers. If you hit the target skill early, you keep the leftover food.
The route
1-50: Charred Wolf Meat
Craft Charred Wolf Meat from 1 to 50. It stays guaranteed until 45, so this whole bracket is close to a sure thing.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (50 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stringy Wolf Meat | 1 | 50 | 60 |
50-100: Smoked Bear Meat
Smoked Bear Meat is guaranteed until 80 and grays at 120. A clean, single-reagent bracket.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (58 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bear Meat | 1 | 58 | 69 |
100-130: Crab Cake
Crab Cake is guaranteed until 115 and grays at 155. This is the first two-reagent recipe on the route.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (34 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crawler Meat | 1 | 34 | 41 |
| Mild Spices | 1 | 34 | 41 |
130-175: Curiously Tasty Omelet
Curiously Tasty Omelet is guaranteed until 170 and grays at 210, so this bracket is almost entirely sure points.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (46 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raptor Egg | 1 | 46 | 55 |
| Hot Spices | 1 | 46 | 55 |
175-225: Roast Raptor
Roast Raptor is guaranteed until 215 and grays at 255. Expert Cooking training should already be handled by this point; Artisan is next, and it needs the quest mentioned above.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (52 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raptor Flesh | 1 | 52 | 62 |
| Hot Spices | 1 | 52 | 62 |
225-275: Undermine Clam Chowder
Undermine Clam Chowder is guaranteed until 265 and grays at 305. Each craft eats two Zesty Clam Meat, so that reagent's total is double the craft count. If Zesty Clam Meat is scarce on your realm, Spotted Yellowtail covers the exact same 225-275 window off a single fish reagent instead.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (52 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zesty Clam Meat | 2 | 104 | 124 |
| Hot Spices | 1 | 52 | 62 |
| Ice Cold Milk | 1 | 52 | 62 |
275-300: Poached Sunscale Salmon
Poached Sunscale Salmon takes you to 300. Guaranteed until 290, gray at 330, so this is the one bracket on the route that needs a fishing pole; the rest of the route does not.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (27 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw Sunscale Salmon | 1 | 27 | 32 |
Total shopping list
Buffered quantities, so this list already includes the roughly 20% RNG cushion.
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Stringy Wolf Meat | 60 |
| Bear Meat | 69 |
| Crawler Meat | 41 |
| Mild Spices | 41 |
| Raptor Egg | 55 |
| Hot Spices | 179 |
| Raptor Flesh | 62 |
| Zesty Clam Meat | 124 |
| Ice Cold Milk | 62 |
| Raw Sunscale Salmon | 32 |
Where this route disagrees with the usual advice
Our own reagent-count engine, run over the same client data, comes up with a very different-looking path: it rides Charred Wolf Meat all the way to 85, then spends most of the climb to 300 on raw fish recipes like Rockscale Cod and Spotted Yellowtail. That path is mathematically valid, but it means leveling Fishing at the same time as Cooking just to keep yourself in reagents. This guide uses the meat-and-vendor route instead, which keeps fish out of the picture until the very last bracket.
One commonly published alternative for the 100-130 window is Dry Pork Ribs. The client data says that recipe cannot be learned until skill 110, so it only covers the tail end of that bracket, not the whole thing. Crab Cake, used here, is learnable at 75 and covers the full window.
Where the usual published quantities and ours overlap, ours run modestly lower, by roughly 20-30%, because our numbers are the mathematical expectation plus a fixed 20% buffer, while published estimates tend to bake in their own informal cushion on top of an already-padded guess. Both land in a similar neighborhood for this profession; Cooking does not have the extreme padding mismatches seen in some crafting professions.
FAQ
How many crafts does 1-300 Cooking take in Classic? Around 320 crafts on average with this route. RNG in the yellow windows means your run can land higher, which is why the shopping list carries a 20% buffer.
Do I need Fishing to level Cooking? No, not for most of the route. The only bracket here that needs a raw fish reagent is the final one, Poached Sunscale Salmon at 275-300. Everything before that is mob-dropped meat or a vendor-bought reagent.
Why did I need more materials than the table said? Once a recipe turns yellow, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. The Expected column is the average outcome; the Buy column covers a normal unlucky run. A very unlucky run can still exceed it.
Does this route work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the same Classic Era client, so the recipes, windows, and counts are identical. Season of Discovery adds recipes and may change the best picks there.
What if I can't find Zesty Clam Meat for the 225-275 bracket? Switch to Spotted Yellowtail. It shares the exact same guaranteed and gray thresholds, so the craft count for that bracket does not change, only the reagent does.
When this guide changes
The craft counts and color windows come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.9). Blizzard rarely touches Era profession data, but if a patch changes recipe thresholds, the numbers here get recomputed and the update noted. If a bracket in your game shows different colors than described, assume a patch moved it and check back.
