Classic Era Alchemy Leveling Guide (1-300)

Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

Classic Alchemy leveling from 1 to 300 takes eleven recipes, roughly 350 crafts, and one trip to a vial vendor. This guide gives you the exact bracket-by-bracket route, expected craft counts computed from the current Classic Era game data, and a shopping list with an honest RNG buffer built in.

It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms, which all run the same 1.15 client. Season of Discovery adds recipes this guide does not cover.

What you need

Train each rank before its cap stops you: Apprentice caps at 75, Journeyman at 150 (character level 10), Expert at 225 (character level 20), and Artisan at 300 (character level 35). Expert and Artisan training means a trip to a specific trainer, so plan those two visits ahead.

Beyond herbs, the only purchased materials are vials, all sold by trade goods vendors near alchemy trainers: Empty Vial, Leaded Vial, and Crystal Vial. Buy them as you go or grab the full counts from the shopping list at the bottom.

Two route notes before you start:

  • No transmutes, no Philosopher's Stone. Transmutes sit behind Alchemy 225 plus a quest item and share a daily cooldown, so they are useless for leveling speed.
  • Most recipes here are trainer-taught. The last two brackets use Recipe: Superior Mana Potion and Recipe: Major Healing Potion, which are limited-supply vendor recipes. Buy them when you see them; check the trainer first for everything else.

How the craft counts work

A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's actual color windows in the game data. Expected means average: half your runs will need more. The Buy column adds about 20% on top, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers. If you hit the target skill early, you keep the leftover herbs and the potions.

The route

1-80: Minor Healing Potion

Craft Minor Healing Potion from 1 all the way to 80. It goes yellow at 55 and gray at 95, so the last 25 points are RNG, but it is still the cheapest bridge to the next recipe, which you cannot learn until skill 80.

Do not sell the potions. The next bracket consumes them as a reagent.

80-110: Lesser Healing Potion

Learn Lesser Healing Potion at 80 and craft to 110. It stays guaranteed until 85 and grays at 125. Each craft eats one Minor Healing Potion from the last bracket plus one Briarthorn; keep at least 53 Minors back to cover the buffered count.

110-140: Healing Potion

Healing Potion is guaranteed until 135 and grays at 175, so this bracket is nearly all sure points. First bracket that uses Leaded Vials.

140-155: Lesser Mana Potion

Lesser Mana Potion is guaranteed until 145 and grays at 185. Fifteen quick points, and the output actually sells to leveling casters.

Stranglekelp11720

155-185: Greater Healing Potion

Greater Healing Potion is guaranteed until 175 and grays at 215. Remember Expert training at 150 before this bracket runs you into the 225 wall.

185-210: Elixir of Agility

Elixir of Agility is guaranteed until 205 and grays at 245. Goldthorn is the choke point herb of this stretch; if it is scarce on your realm, Mana Potion (guaranteed to 180, gray at 220) covers the same bracket with Stranglekelp and Kingsblood instead.

Stranglekelp12631

210-215: Elixir of Greater Defense

Five guaranteed points. Elixir of Greater Defense stays orange until 215, exactly where you stop.

Wild Steelbloom156
Goldthorn156

215-230: Superior Healing Potion

Superior Healing Potion is guaranteed all the way to 230, so this bracket has zero RNG: 15 crafts, 15 points. Train Artisan at 225 before moving on. First bracket on Crystal Vials.

230-265: Elixir of Detect Undead

Elixir of Detect Undead is the classic cheap stretch: two reagents, guaranteed until 245, gray at 285. The elixirs themselves are near worthless, so treat the herbs as the whole cost. Riding it to 265 keeps you fully inside the next recipe's guaranteed window.

265-285: Superior Mana Potion

Superior Mana Potion is guaranteed until 275 and grays at 315. This is the vendor recipe, and the first double-reagent craft, so the herb count is twice the craft count.

285-300: Major Healing Potion

Major Healing Potion takes you home. Guaranteed until 290, gray at 330, so the last ten points are yellow rolls; the buffer matters most here. Also a vendor recipe, and the output holds value better than anything else on this route.

FAQ

How many crafts does 1-300 Alchemy take in Classic? Around 345 crafts on average with this route. RNG in the yellow windows means your run can land higher, which is why the shopping list carries a 20% buffer.

Why did I need more materials than the table said? Once a recipe turns yellow, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. The Expected column is the average outcome; the Buy column covers a normal unlucky run. A very unlucky run can still exceed it.

Do I need transmutes or a Philosopher's Stone to level Alchemy? No. Transmutes require Alchemy 225 and a Philosopher's Stone, and they share a daily cooldown, so they add nothing to leveling speed. This route skips them entirely.

Does this route work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the same Classic Era client, so the recipes, windows, and counts are identical. Season of Discovery adds recipes and may change the best picks there.

What character level do I need for 300 Alchemy? Level 35, for Artisan training. Journeyman needs level 10 and Expert needs level 20, so the profession roughly keeps pace with normal leveling.

When this guide changes

The craft counts and color windows come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.9). Blizzard rarely touches Era profession data, but if a patch changes recipe thresholds, or Season of Discovery picks are added, the numbers here get recomputed and the update noted. If a bracket in your game shows different colors than described, assume a patch moved it and check back.
