Classic Era Leatherworking Leveling Guide (1-300)

Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.

Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.

Classic Leatherworking leveling from 1 to 300 takes eighteen recipes and roughly 420 crafts with an honest RNG buffer built in. This guide gives you the exact bracket-by-bracket route, expected craft counts computed from the current Classic Era game data, and a shopping list you can fill in one or two Auction House trips.

It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms, which all run the same 1.15 client. Season of Discovery adds recipes this guide does not cover.

What you need

Train each rank before its cap stops you: Apprentice caps at 75, Journeyman at 150 (character level 10), Expert at 225 (character level 20), and Artisan at 300 (character level 35). Journeyman training falls inside the Embossed Leather Gloves bracket below, and Expert lands right on the boundary between the Heavy Leather and Cured Heavy Hide brackets, so plan both trainer visits ahead of time.

Every material below is either a leather tier (Light, Medium, Heavy, Thick, or Rugged Leather) that skinners sell on the Auction House, or a cheap trade-goods item (thread, dye, salt, Runecloth). Nothing in this route needs a raid drop or a daily-cooldown transmute.

One route note before you start: our own path-finding tool, run purely on "fewest reagent types," picks a very different route that ends on Onyxia Scale Cloak, a recipe needing Scale of Onyxia, a drop from the Onyxia 40-man raid boss. That path is data-feasible but useless for leveling, so this guide follows the trainer- and vendor-taught recipes instead. Several recipes past skill 260, including Barbaric Shoulders and the Wicked and Runic Leather patterns, are sold by leatherworking trainers rather than learned automatically as you level, so it is worth checking your trainer's list before you reach that bracket.

How the craft counts work

A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's actual color windows in the game data. Expected means average: half your runs will need more. The Buy column adds about 20% on top, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers. If you hit the target skill early, you keep the leftover leather and gear.

The route

1-125: Basic leather goods

Start by converting vendor-bought Ruined Leather Scraps into Light Leather, guaranteed the entire way to skill 20. From there, Light Armor Kit, Handstitched Leather Cloak, Embossed Leather Gloves, and Fine Leather Belt all consume Light Leather and Coarse Thread, and all four are trainer recipes available from skill 1, so you can buy the pattern the moment you reach the bracket. Embossed Leather Gloves is the widest bracket here and crosses your Journeyman training at 75.

100-125Fine Leather Belt3138Light Leather x228, Coarse Thread x76
Light Leather is a common Auction House commodity, so buy the bulk of the 488 total needed across these four brackets rather than relying only on what you craft in the first bracket.

125-200: Medium and heavy leather

Dark Leather Boots has a min-skill requirement of 100, not 1, so it genuinely cannot be learned before then even though its yellow threshold sits at 125, right where this bracket starts; every craft in this bracket is already a chance roll rather than a guaranteed point. Dark Leather Pants follows, then a short Heavy Leather bracket converts Medium Leather into Heavy Leather for later brackets, and Cured Heavy Hide turns Heavy Hide and Salt into the reagent that Heavy Armor Kit, Barbaric Shoulders, and Guardian Gloves all need. Expert training at 150 lands exactly at the start of the Heavy Leather bracket.

190-200Guardian Gloves1012Heavy Leather x48, Cured Heavy Hide x12, Silken Thread x12
Cured Heavy Hide is not an Auction House item, it is craft-only. The 155-165 bracket makes 15 of them with the buffer applied, but Barbaric Shoulders and Guardian Gloves together need 24. Keep crafting Cured Heavy Hide past skill 165, using 9 more Heavy Hide and 27 more Salt, until you have enough; the recipe still works once it stops granting skill points, it just stops being free progress.

200-300: Thick and rugged leather

Thick Armor Kit opens the last stretch, guaranteed the whole 5 points. Nightscape Headband is the longest bracket in the route and crosses Artisan training at 225. Nightscape Pants and Nightscape Boots finish the Thick Leather reagent, then Wicked Leather Gauntlets and Runic Leather Headband close out the route on Rugged Leather.

Total shopping list

Buffered quantities, so this list already includes the roughly 20% RNG cushion. Light Leather, Medium Leather, Heavy Leather, Thick Leather, and Rugged Leather are all standard skinning-tier commodities you buy directly; Cured Heavy Hide is not on this list because you craft all of it yourself (see the note above).

Where this route disagrees with the usual published advice

Heavy Armor Kit (165-180) is the biggest gap. Commonly cited totals run around 75 Heavy Leather for this bracket. The real expected-value math needs 115 with the buffer applied, about 53% more, because this recipe's yellow window runs from 170 to 190, so two thirds of the bracket is a chance roll rather than a guaranteed point.

Embossed Leather Gloves (55-100) runs the same direction. Figures near 150 Light Leather and 100 Coarse Thread undercount it; the real math needs 186 and 124 with the buffer, because the recipe is only guaranteed until 85 and then has to ride chance all the way to 100.

Dark Leather Boots (125-137) needs more than a casual estimate suggests, and for a specific reason tied to Classic's rules: the recipe's min-skill requirement is 100 and its yellow threshold is 125, which is exactly where this bracket starts. There is no guaranteed portion at all here, every single craft is already a chance roll, so the real number (80 Medium Leather buffered) runs well above a flat estimate that assumes some of the bracket is orange.

Cured Heavy Hide (155-165) goes the other way. Figures near 20 Heavy Hide and 60 Salt for this bracket overcount it; the real math needs 15 and 45 with the buffer, about 33% less, because the bracket's yellow window is short and mostly still guaranteed.

FAQ

How many crafts does 1-300 Leatherworking take in Classic? Around 346 crafts on average with this route, 422 once you add the 20% buffer used throughout this guide. RNG in the yellow windows means your run can land higher.

Why did I need more materials than the table said? Once a recipe turns yellow, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. The Expected column is the average outcome; the Buy column covers a normal unlucky run. A very unlucky run can still exceed it.

Does this route work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the same Classic Era client, so the recipes, windows, and counts are identical. Season of Discovery adds recipes and may change the best picks there.

What character level do I need for 300 Leatherworking? Level 35, for Artisan training. Journeyman needs level 10 and Expert needs level 20, so the profession roughly keeps pace with normal leveling.

Do I need Skinning to level Leatherworking? No. Light, Medium, Heavy, Thick, and Rugged Leather are all Auction House commodities, and this route is built around buying them. Skinning lowers your cost, it does not change the route.

When this guide changes

The craft counts and color windows come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.9). Blizzard rarely touches Era profession data, but if a patch changes recipe thresholds, or Season of Discovery picks are added, the numbers here get recomputed and the update noted. If a bracket in your game shows different colors than described, assume a patch moved it and check back.
