Numbers on this page are computed from the Classic Era client, build 1.15.9.68940. Applies to Classic Era, Hardcore and Anniversary realms.
Draft in review. This route is computed and verified against the game client, but the writing has not had its final editorial pass, and the page is kept out of search until it does.
Classic Blacksmithing leveling from 1 to 300 takes seven recipes and roughly 460 crafts. This guide gives you the exact bracket-by-bracket route, expected craft counts computed from the current Classic Era game data, and a shopping list with an honest RNG buffer built in.
It applies to Classic Era, Hardcore, and the Anniversary realms, which all run the same 1.15 client. Season of Discovery adds recipes this guide does not cover.
What you need
Train each rank before its cap stops you: Apprentice caps at 75, Journeyman at 150 (character level 10), Expert at 225 (character level 20), and Artisan at 300 (character level 35). Two of the brackets below cross a rank cap, so plan those trainer visits ahead.
The material list is short: Rough Stone, Copper Bar, Iron Bar, Solid Stone, Dense Stone, Thorium Bar, and two gems (Star Ruby, Aquamarine) for the final stretch. No cloth, no leather, no dyes, and nothing that requires a second profession.
One route note before you start: skip Arcanite Skeleton Key. It looks tempting late game because it only needs two reagents, but one of them is Arcanite Bar, which requires an Alchemy transmute on a daily cooldown. Twenty-eight days of transmutes to level one bracket is not a leveling plan. The route below avoids it entirely; see the disagreements section for the replacement.
How the craft counts work
A recipe gives a guaranteed skill point while it is orange, a shrinking chance while it is yellow, and nothing once it goes gray. The expected craft counts below come from that math applied to each recipe's actual color windows in the game data. Expected means average: half your runs will need more. The Buy column adds about 20% on top, and the shopping list uses those buffered numbers. If you hit the target skill early, you keep the leftover stones and gear.
The route
1-51: Rough Sharpening Stone
Craft Rough Sharpening Stone from 1 to 51. It goes yellow at 15 and gray at 55, so most of this bracket runs on a shrinking chance, not a guarantee. It is still the cheapest possible opener: one reagent, no cloth or leather needed.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (102 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rough Stone | 1 | 102 | 123 |
51-60: Copper Bracers
Switch to Copper Bracers at 51. Its own window (guaranteed to 20, gray at 60) means it is already past its easy zone too, but its gray sits five points further out than Rough Sharpening Stone's, which is enough to make it the better of the two for this short stretch.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (114 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copper Bar | 2 | 228 | 274 |
60-151: Iron Buckle
This is the bracket that collapses most published routes into one recipe. Iron Buckle is guaranteed from skill 1 all the way to 150, so riding it from 60 to 151 is entirely RNG-free: 91 skill points, 91 crafts, no wasted materials. It also crosses the Journeyman cap at 75, so train that rank on the way through. Each craft yields two buckles; sell the extras, they don't affect the math.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (91 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Bar | 1 | 91 | 110 |
151-201: Solid Sharpening Stone
Train Expert at 150 before this bracket, since it opens right where Iron Buckle grays out. Solid Sharpening Stone is guaranteed to 200, so 151 to 201 is another almost entirely guaranteed stretch on a single reagent.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (50 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solid Stone | 1 | 50 | 60 |
201-258: Dense Sharpening Stone
Dense Sharpening Stone stays guaranteed until 255, then goes gray fast at 260. Riding it to 258 keeps almost all of the bracket on the guaranteed side and still reaches a comfortable jump-off point for the Thorium recipes.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (58 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dense Stone | 1 | 58 | 70 |
258-290: Imperial Plate Bracers
Train Artisan at 225 before this point if you haven't already; you'll need it well before 258. Imperial Plate Bracers is guaranteed all the way to 290, so this entire 32-point bracket is RNG-free.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (32 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thorium Bar | 20 | 640 | 768 |
| Star Ruby | 1 | 32 | 39 |
290-300: Imperial Plate Boots
Imperial Plate Boots takes you home. It stays guaranteed until 315, well past your 300 target, so the last ten points are also zero-RNG.
| Material | Per craft | Expected (10 crafts) | Buy (+20%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thorium Bar | 34 | 340 | 408 |
| Star Ruby | 1 | 10 | 12 |
| Aquamarine | 1 | 10 | 12 |
Total shopping list
Buffered quantities, so this list already includes the roughly 20% RNG cushion.
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Rough Stone | 123 |
| Copper Bar | 274 |
| Iron Bar | 110 |
| Solid Stone | 60 |
| Dense Stone | 70 |
| Thorium Bar | 1,176 |
| Star Ruby | 51 |
| Aquamarine | 12 |
Where this route disagrees with the usual advice
Three places, all verified against the current client data.
Coarse Sharpening Stone is not learnable at skill 65. It's a common early pick in published routes, but the game data puts its training requirement at skill 75, five points past the point where the recipe itself already starts going yellow (its yellow threshold is 65). By the time you can train it, it's already decaying. We cut it, along with the Rough Grinding Stone and Coarse Grinding Stone detour that usually surrounds it, and skip straight from Copper Bracers to Iron Buckle instead.
The 60-150 stretch does not need four or five recipes. Most guides route you through Coarse Sharpening Stone, Coarse Grinding Stone, Runed Copper Belt, and a Silver Rod detour to cover this range. The game data shows Iron Buckle alone is guaranteed for the entire span on one reagent, Iron Bar, with zero RNG. One recipe replaces the whole detour.
Arcanite Skeleton Key is not a real leveling option. A reagent-count-optimal pass over the data flags it as a strong pick for the 258-282 range, since it only needs two ingredients. One of those, Arcanite Bar, only comes from an Alchemy transmute with a daily cooldown, so it caps you at one craft per day, per character, across two professions. We route around it entirely with Imperial Plate Bracers and Boots, the same recipes most published guides eventually reach for at the very end, just started earlier: the data shows both are already fully guaranteed at skill 258, not 270.
FAQ
How many crafts does 1-300 Blacksmithing take in Classic? About 457 crafts on average with this route, most of it fully guaranteed. Only two of the seven brackets carry real RNG (Rough Sharpening Stone and Copper Bracers), which is why the total buffered count in the shopping list runs higher.
Why did I need more materials than the table said? Once a recipe turns yellow, skill-ups are a chance, not a guarantee, and the chance shrinks as you approach gray. Five of the seven brackets in this route are guaranteed the whole way through, so this mostly affects the first two brackets. The Buy column already carries a 20% cushion for a normal unlucky run.
Do I need Arcanite Bar or a daily-cooldown transmute to level Blacksmithing? No. The only recipe on this route that would need one, Arcanite Skeleton Key, is cut entirely. Everything here runs on ore bars, two basic stones, and two gems, all farmable or auction-house materials.
Does this route work on Hardcore and Anniversary realms? Yes. Both run the same Classic Era client, so the recipes, windows, and counts are identical. Season of Discovery adds recipes and may change the best picks there.
What character level do I need for 300 Blacksmithing? Level 35, for Artisan training. Journeyman needs level 10 and Expert needs level 20, so the profession roughly keeps pace with normal leveling. Plan the Artisan visit before you reach skill 258.
When this guide changes
The craft counts and color windows come from the current Classic Era client data (1.15.9). Blizzard rarely touches Era profession data, but if a patch changes recipe thresholds, or Season of Discovery picks are added, the numbers here get recomputed and the update noted. If a bracket in your game shows different colors than described, assume a patch moved it and check back.
